Thanks Stone_Man. Hope I can find the time to create an effective portable.

Glad you like the pine J.R.R.Tokin. I'm pleased that it worked out.

Well, I just finished assembling a few HI units. Left to right starting in the front row:

Bocote, maple burl, redheart, pine, blood wood, walnut burl, spalted / quilted silver leaf maple, sugar maple branch, osage orange, walnut burl. They are fully assembled and ready for testing. Some are already spoken for. The rest are available after they pass testing. I'm going to start on some more right away.

Awesome woodwork .. This for sure competes with the UD twigs in appearance !
As i mentioned i am very intrested in a portable log or a nice battery pack that can be used with my UD.
I would have gone with the ettera moxie if it wasn't 2005 year design.. :). They too have glass stems .. and short heatup time .. like (80 secs they claim..) ..They even have an ultralite version that looks like a cigar bud :). uses only 3 w and run very hot :).
If you can come up with something matchin those criteria with your ways of work.. you got me IN for sure :).

Hey Alan I think that one in the middle has my name on it? lol I cant wait to own any one of those beautiful pieces of wood.

mflb_hustler,
One more question regarding the efficiency of the HI:

I know that the question of "how many hits" is subjective, but with the PD, the standard wisdom was that you'd get 2-3 decent hits from a bowl, with the third being much weaker than the first 2. I've found this to be true of my PD, unless I add some kief to the end of the bowl, which then allows me to get 5-6 decent hits, with a few wispier ones afterwords.

Could I expect a similar amount of hits from each HI bowl?

Basically, will I find myself going through herb any faster with the HI than the PD?

Thanks Abysmal Vapor and GO!!bot. Testing is going well so far.

I will send out some emails to those who have been in contact with me so I can get these things out of here.
The email address in my first post has been corrected. Please contact me again if you tried and I didn't respond.

OKcomputer - I make 3 bowl sizes. 3/8" , 5/16", and 1/4" ID. Each bowl size has several variations. All work with the HI. The amount of material you are likely to use and air flow goes up as the bowl size increases. PD stems have a 1/4" ID and are restricted a bit more by the crimp / clip in the tubing. I make a tube combination that would give similar results to a PD stem. It just all depends upon how big of a hit you want on which tube to select and how quickly you will reduce your supply.
My old 1/4" ID tubes were restricted by the ID of 1/4" ss tubing. My new 1/4" ID tubes are a full 1/4" at the screen. The 1/4" ID tubes are the only ones that will fit into the HI / TT center tube (also CRZ). I imagine the PD stem is probably somewhere between my old and new 1/4" ID tubes for airflow. Both the old and the new should hold about the same amount as a PD stem. Unfortunately, the PD stem is a bit too small to fit into the HI center tube. There may be too much mixing with room air to get a high enough temperature for roasting.

Do you guys use the VV adapters? If so which voltages do you use? I know combustion is possible at 12v, and I want to avoid that at all costs.

Also, how would the airflow compare to the Solo for those that have one? Solo is pretty restricted, so curious how the HI compares.

Alan, ballpark what kind of timeline are we looking at for the battery pack?

Thanks for contacting me Alan. I'm ready to RoCk one of these bad boys anytime. Is there a post describing the tube and tip options in a simple form?

Alan, here's another why to handle shipping. I used to sell on EBAY quite a bit. You can set up a paypal account and use that account to pay for shipping that's not related to EBAY. You can use UPS, USPS or even Fed Ex now. EBAY does not advertise this feature. It gives you more options than the 2 USPS boxes you talked about and the more you use it the cheaper shipping gets. You can print out all the postage and pay for it all at home. It's so slick.

Unfortunately, the vv adapters don't have a voltage display. Just adjust it to the position that works the best for you. It can be marked so you can return to it. I measured the voltage at a position that worked well for me and got 11.5 volts.

Wish I could tell you the battery pack will be ready soon, but it is still just a vision.

Thanks for the shipping tips vapormonkey. Will have to check into that.

battery pack...could it be shaped so that the HI slips into it and it would then be the size of a normal log vape? I think this would be easier to handle than a double-long HI.

Wow Alan they all look great!

I'd have to add in my opinion the the bocote and the pine look the coolest.
Have you thought about trying to make a HI with some zebra wood or some cocobolo or even some ebony?

Thanks EyeFonez.
You mean like this zebra wood HI?
The stem was cut from one corner of the same 2x2 chunk of wood used to turn the HI.

Thank you everyone for being patient with me. Email is starting to take up more of my shop time. I just want to be sure each of you gets exactly what you need.

Hoping for some good lighting so I can post a photo of my new 14mm gong all glass turbo tube. It has a full 3/8" ID for even less drag and better air flow.

Wow Alan, you have really been busy! I think that your new HI's look amazing. You've used some real pretty wood species.

Good thing my penny jar is almost full!

Thanks mom. I had turned it a while back and had not gotten around to post a photo. It is now providing happiness somewhere.

How does this thing compare to other log vapes?
It depends on who you're asking and what you're comparing. Read about the HI here, and other log vapes in their threads, and come to your own conclusions. You can't do a Q&A session about all log vapes in a vape specific thread. It doesn't work well for staying on topic or keeping the peace.

Good thing you mentioned that it wasn't available Alan. You'd probably be getting an order for it before the end of the day. ;)

Seriously +1 to that!
The zebra wood looks absolutely amazing.

If you ever get the chance to work with cocobolo or ebony I'd love to see the results Alan!

Although for now I think I've got my eye on a purple-heart HI ;)

If this happened, I might have to get an HI too
drawing as little power as a log does, how long you think a battery pack that size would last for?

Haven't had much sunshine the last few days, so I just too some photos in my shop.
Here is my latest all glass turbo tube. It is made from 14mm heavy wall glass tubing. One end is ground for a 14mm gong and the other end has a 10mm hole bored 1/2" deep. The bowl has been flame polished to be mostly transparent. I also discovered that my stainless steel slide-in tip assemblies will fit right into the glass bowl of the turbo tube. The glass turbo tube can also be used for ss tip roasting.
I am currently making the glass turbo tubes in 2-1/2" (as shown), 3", and 3-1/2" lengths. The 3-1/2" tubes work well for direct draw as the taper fits well to your lips.

Got your email mom. I may have something that might interest yew.

scottio19 - I would be happy if it lasted for an hour. Wish I had more time to mess around with it.

Sorry bruno13. I can't help myself. I just have to do it.

Thanks Ed, Vito, psyshaman, EyeFonez, and max. I do have some cocobolo and ebony of sufficient size to make a HI. May have to try one of these days.
