Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

Out to lunch
I'm thrilled you guys have decided to offer another choice of woods, but I don't know if I can hold off any longer. Tom, when do you think we might see the first walnut units available for ordering? Maybe I'll have to put in a cherry order in the meantime, as the anticipation of trying a PD is killing me. But then what do you expect after reading 100 pages of glowing reviews?
Easy to see where Tom's comment on the walnut being a new selection is confusing people. He's talking about a walnut Billy Bowl. Walnut PDs were rejected as being a little too smelly I believe. Since the time when other woods were being considered, I think they settled on 'Cherry only' to simplify things and make sure that different wood choices didn't make for production delays.

finally came.
plugged in now, but first impression:
no led light, perhaps taking out? i dont remember reading it, so not sure on that. the pad on the bottom has no PD logo. both of these are minor and dont really matter to me as long as the unit works well. heres hopin i figure it out soon:)
its as small as i was figuring, seeing how so many posts are about how small it is.
holding the pd unside down with the tube in it, tube slides out. i know the fit is suppose to be loose, but that loose?
question: whats that little brown sealed bag with what looks to be rocks in it? i assume its a smeller thing?
even though i read half of this hige ass thread, i cant remember shit haha my bad about the easily answered questions.

Ahh, you're right. Good reading comprehension there. :/

I think it's interesting what you said about the smell of walnut though. I ordered that walnut VG for a portable solution on an upcoming vacation, so I haven't tried it yet. I do notice a slightly odd smell/flavor when I breathe through the pipe. I assumed it was just characteristic of any wooden pipe. I wonder now if the walnut imparts an extra taste that the others woods would not. I have yet to read anything about particular earthy tastes from any VG.

And to jklasd, I believe I read in this thread that Tom decided to take out the LED because the heat was causing problems with the wiring and would be a likely component to fail over time.

Yes, the fit of the tube is supposed to be that loose to facilitate mating.

The little bag is used to blow out the duff from the stem. It's pretty ingenious, actually. Before I used it, I tried blowing it out into a shot glass :uhoh: . BAD idea.....lol.

jklasd, it did come out a long time ago - but I think it was by not being durable enough - not heat - plus another part that could fail. I think there are videos of it not 'taking the beating'. Tom made a good move making the PD into a Sherman tank.

I'm glad there is no pad or logo on the bottom - I'd rather just get a naked PD!

Ok - folks, I'm going to be hitting refresh on vn's page unit for when my PD is available to buy! Anytime now... Bueller....

Not to overly quibble or ruffle feathers or anyone's sensibilities (but hey this is a long thread, and we can take it so here comes;)) - I have a hard time w/calling a functional appliance a piece of art or artwork. Yes, hand crafted with skilled labor applied and quality materials, but at some point, aren't we talking about a utility to get medication? I feel there is a little anthropomorphizing or at least romanticizing going on here, but yes, that is IMO, my :2c:, etc. - Perhaps when I get mine, I'll push my wife out of the bed and it will be like a Sponge Bob episode of interludes of me w/the PD, but I doubt it.

nah, i think we are thinking of something different, it was a brown bag, sealed, kinda like the package it self with a bee on it. but thank you for the tubing answer:)
been trying it, having a bit of trouble with hits, but im new so.

Just gotta keep at it and use the method that works best for you.

For me, I hit it like I would hit a joint, but much slower.

yea im trying a couple different draws so fast, same result.
oooo just got a decent size. its not bad, i like it, second stem and im decently buzzed:)
def not the ssv power hits, but hits that hold their own and gets your baked pretty decently.
EDIT: 2 hits on second stem later and i am fucking FLYING. come join me everyone lol.

I know we all like to play dress up once in a while. I'm not really named 'duh' and you aren't named after a sci-fi novel (google+wikipedia). In this culture, I'm not sure a fan is a good thing anymore - we are all participating now - engaging w/the ppl who are involved directly.

I guess in a sense, I would hope we are trying to be pioneers. Help w/ppl that come after to know what works/doesn't and help give good advice. It's hard to do that objectively w/your arm around your vape.

will the resistor inside ever get hot enough to cumbust? i spanked my pd today, and i found 2 rather large flakes that were completely white and gray.... not sure how long they have been in there, but i dont think that long, and i thought the resistor only got to the set temp and leveled off?
You can burn food on the stove even at the low heat setting if it sits there long enough, but I doubt any plant material would actually ignite in the vape, even sitting down there on the resistor.
thats what i thought, and it was definately chared... one was a chunk and was all white, when i touched it it was powdered ash, the second piece was a little mor leafy but same thing. if the pd only gets up to the set temp, i dont see how there should be any ash at all coming out of the thing no matter if the plant material sat in there for a month or a day. but my pd has been getting plugged in only on the weekends, so even if the material has been in the unit for a while, the time it was plugged in for was only a couple of days.

i dont think anything is wrong with my unit, and i have had it for a few months now, but this is the first that something like this has happened. i guess i shouldnt say the first, i have had it happen before just not as much was chared, maybe just a corner of a piece had turned white, and always played it off as im just stoned and my eyes are messing with me.

anyone else have this problem or shoudlnt i be worried about some burnt plant material and just tap everything out more often?

True. But I'm always game for the latest and greatest. I've owned a number of vapes and for me the PD and the SSV turned out to be a perfect set, for me. For others it'll be different. I don't get the vibe that there are many folks here who have their arms around their vapes. Seems like most people here support the good stuff and stand by it while remaining open extremely open to new pieces and discussing them critically.:ko:

Frickr, I don't think there is anything wrong with your PD, IMO. I tend to always turn my PD over and tap it a few times before I use it each day. I've had a few small dark brown flakes come out, but other times nothing. Never seen anything that looks like ash.

most of what fell out was dark dark brown if not black, or dark brown and the 2 pieces completely chared.

the only thing i could think of that might of caused it is having a plug in heater on the same circuit. different outlet, when the heater would click on the lights and everything would dim, then would go back to normal when it clicked off. would it at all be possible that while using it during the time the heater was on, could that cause enough of a drain, that when the heater kicked off, the electricity would surge back to it? could this at all have any effect on possibly heating up my unit enough to cause this?

provided that your input voltage is constant, the voltage from the transformer will be constant as they are both mutually related in inductance. so if a short period of having less input current, then spiking back to a slightly higher current, would that cause any kind of temp change in the resistor? the resistor should absorb any of that extra current and put out a higher temp. but i dont know how long the spike was, i cant imagine long, thats why im puzzled

Frickr, correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as there's no ash or charring in your bowl, then this should be a non issue, right?

frickr...I've tapped some burnt looking stuff out of my PD before. I don't think it is anything to be concerned about. My only rule is to tap it after I vape, not before. If I do it before I sometimes move something nearer the heat and it smells for a little bit.

jklasd...you're starting just as I did. In a few days you will be getting some thick ass clouds...vape on!

well just got back from class, and todays notes happened to be about inductance and how that can influence the magnetic field, well the transformer on the wall uses a magnetic field to change the current. so this spike in currentlike i described above could raise the voltage substancially in the business end of the plug. this clicking on and off, changing the inductance in the transformer could of led to minor overheating. or so is my theory.

so just to start off i want to say im sorry to tom because i was one of those impatient people that flooded them with emails asking them when it will send. :( it came waaaay faster than i ever thought and within 24 hours of having it i was completly over combustion. it is worth everypenny and WILL drop your consumption which inturn pays for the pd.

so your saying the walnut will be on your site then? or are exotics going to be handled by vape now as well. i want a walnut unit extreeeeemly bad. bad enough im going to sit on two if the need arises. plus i have a new glass friend that is in the process of being constructed :brow:

so tom take your time responding to this and whatever else you want. ill be patient this time. i promise hahahhaha
:peace:

There is no walnut PD. There IS a walnut Billy Bowl.

hub, the $150 a gallon price seems fair, you need a gallon? You always save by buying bulk, the mfg uses one container, one filling, one label, one shipping, one set of paperwork and one transaction. The price of a 2 ounce tin has more to do with all the other stuff, not the Buzz-Butter itself. Our price difference between 1 oz and 2 oz was only $2, the rest is what costs on small items like that. BTW 1 oz tins are discontinued.

Shoot I never thought of bulk pricing. Woodworkers might like the stuff in bulk, I use it out of those flat 8 ounce chip dip tubs. But till now it has been a minor sideline, something fun to use and toss in as samples ... lagniappe. :)

Speaking of lagniappe, those were garden seeds in that brown paper. Morning glorys and a few other things. When we were selling retail we liked to put little surprises in the boxes. The seeds for spring was an idea that came at the very end.

Walnut was rejected as a PD wood species choice because of odor. It's not bad, and I even find it pleasant and nostalgic. Many hours of husking and later shelling black walnuts under Grandpa's tree listening to the ballgame on radio. My Billy Bowl is walnut. Anyway freshley worked walnut has an odor, enough that it might throw someone off a bit at first. The odor disipates within a week or so of use and while you can still smell that it is walnut if you are tuned in, it's not much stronger than most woods at that point. Thing is, first impressions are lasting, and a week or two waiting on a smell to go away, may make it not acceptable to some. The VG like the PDs will disipate. Most of the odor is from the freshly worked wood surface and those odor molecules will eventually drift away.

About the LED. They were discontinued quite a while back. Heat is an issue with LEDs, you have to be careful with them during assembly, too long or too hot with a soldering iron and poof. I had to use a strict soldering order and gator clips as heat sinks to protect the LED while working.

It became evident that heat migrating through the solid copper wiring and back into the LED circuit was causing some to have long term reliability problems. Some seem to last forever (the way an LED is supposed to), others not so long. We have dealt with these LED models and if you have one that fails let us know. We tried several heat sink/ dissipation schemes and none were entirely successful. A weak link, in an otherwise strong design, had to go.

The bottom stamp with our URL was another, had to go item. I know of two of our purple children that have been confiscated by authorities. Having a nice logo pointing right at us just didn't make sense.

About the objet d art . I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it. What Pammy does is art. What she creates is art. What I do is a craft or trade. What I make is a tool.

Yes, I do the anthropomorphic thing and call them 'purple children'. Sorry, gotta have some fun.

Been making a small raft of PDs today. In the end, by concentrating on production, I will be able to get more PDs to more people. It feels good to let the chips fly.

Max, woodworkers don't get tired of wood, it's 'in your blood', unfortunately the tourism industry has suffered over the last years and recently seems that most folks going up or down 101 just stop in the shops to look. We have enjoyed bringing some extra business to our friends thru the Billy-Bowls and really hope this helps keep them going thru some hard times. :)

thanks for the answers tom. as i said, not that big of a deal with me, just caught me off guard, but it makes sense to eliminate the weak point, and a point that could get you in trouble/a bad rep. it works great so far, cant wait til i figure this thing out:)

There really isn't much to figure out. That's sort of the point with the PD. A few tips, though...

1. Make sure to have dry, finely ground up bud. I use decent regs and get nice, tasty results each and every time.

2. Make sure not to over pack the stem. You need good airflow so you don't have to use vacuum lungs. I prefer the suck straw method.

3. Hit it deep and slow. If you hear air hissing you are hitting it too hard for maximum vapor.

Sticking to those 3 methods have led me to stay high all day using only a gram or so of decent regs. Not to mention the nice, tasty vapor hits.

I love this thing. PD rocks!

Also thanks to Tom and Pam and best wishes for success in the new business direction.
