I received my vaporizer, so I updated the first post, but here are more photos:

My order:

Pipe Klena, Box, Poster, Box with spare parts, spare gauzes.


Things that I didn't like:
Pipe Klena:

The cap had a very damaged silver paint that peels.

Box:

The laminate of the box was damaged too, it can be caused by heat, but still it looks bad for an unused product.


Things that I liked:

Alivi8

The vaporizer is heavier than it looks, but it has this tough, unbreakable feeling when you hold it.


Spare parts box:

A very nice box to keep the spare parts so that you don't loose them.


Disjointed:

From left to right - vape filter system, body, vape maze path + mouth piece, poker.
The poker is a nice thing but have in mind that it falls from the mouth piece, so it's easy to loose it.


Size comparison:

It's longer, narrower and heavier than the MFLB with the heaviest part the maze path piece (50% of the whole weight).


This vaporizer won't replace my MFLB, but it is a nice pocket addition, that uses flame as heating source.

My main concerns were if the maze path really works, it seems to work, because I already overcooked 2 bowls and the air wasn't burning my tongue :) (I haven't used pipe-like vaporizer before).

The filter part and the beginning of the body get hot, but the mouth piece remains at normal temperature.
I got it yesterday so I haven't tried it for a longer session with more people yet to tell you if it remains like this, but to get me herbalized the body and the mouth piece stay at a good temperature.

I am not a regular stoner and I can let myself go high only weekends, so I will have more experience with the vaporizer in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately I haven't used other vaporizer than the MFLB, so I can't compare it to many products, but so far (based on 1,5 times usage, so it can be inaccurate, it's just a pre-pre-preview):

  • The MFLB cools faster and is stealthier (practically there is no need for cooling since the shell is wood, which makes putting it in the pocket easier) (while the mouthpiece of alivi8 doesn't get hot - the filter part does)[/*]
  • I like the vapor taste of alivi8 more (I always wondered how a vapor can be soft and milky, now I think I found out)[/*]
  • I have to draw very slowly from the MFLB so that it doesn't cool, contrary to this where I overcooked seriously the herbs with slow drawing.[/*]

Edit: I actually have a high temperature thermometer, I will make a test tomorrow for the actual temperature the mouth piece gets to. I hope it works since the thermometer is good only for static temperature and returns very inaccurate numbers for dynamically changing temperatures (It needs a lot of time to give a result)

seems to be an interesting product. actually i was ready to buy the lotus as an addition to my mflb in the portable department. but now i'm almost inclined to go for the alivi8. does anybody know, how the two compare to eachother? also, i was unable to see the video of its use at youtube because of the music the manufacturer used for it it's blocked in my country. is it possible to get a soundtrack free version or better one with cc-music :)

I havent used either, but read a lot about both. I would surely choose the Alivi8. I have read a lot of awesome feedback about the maze vapor path (or smoke path inb their combustion pipes). Also from what I understand the Alivi8 is much more a convection vape and the Lotus is more conduction based? I could be wrong about the Lotus though. I am planning to get the Alivi8 soon after I get my Arizer Solo :D

Never used an Alive8 but the Lotus is a different style of vaporizer. The Alive8 looks like you are sucking the flame onto a filter which heats up and provides convection. Butane is in the airpath similar to a vaporgenie, not that I mind that. With the Lotus, you heat up a nickel "hot plate" with a torch flame while inhaling. The air flows initially through holes underneath the "cap" of the device, past the "hot plate" and then through tiny holes into the bowl. An extremely effective and efficient, pure convection vape with no butane in the airpath. The aluminum stem is also very effective at cooling the vapor while leaving flavor in. I know the Lotus is portable, but I use it at home over a fair selection of "home" vaporizers.

I've only used an older version of the Aluminium Bat, it got almost too hot to handle. However, they came out with an improved version which is supposed to have better insulation.

I have the stainless steel Amazed smokin pipe by redeye, and love it. I'm very interested in this thing, but have a few questions...


So, I've seen the term NASA technology to describe the heat filter... Really?

I'm wondering if the filter is made of stainless steel like the rest of the Alivi8?

Also concerned if, over time, one would eventually end up "smoking" the filter...and inhaling its fumes?

Pasterino-did the accessories you pictured come with the Alivi8, or did you order them separately?

Hi there peeps this is my first post here, but i have been around on GC for a month or so now. Im a new smoker, have never touched tobacco, and was recommended to switch to a vaporizer so as to help keep my lungs healthy. I bought the Alivi8 as it fit my needs, although it was a bit of a gamble as i couldn't find much online about it.
So here i am, and i have knocked together a review, of the pipe, and how it hits and uploaded it to YouTube.

Hope it helps, also, as a side note. I dont think it gets me as mashed as a joint when the high generally lasts longer, but it does consume far less weed per hit for ashorter high. But im gonna get through a bit first before i pass judgement.

So i have had the Alivi8 for around a week now. Not finding it better than a good joint right now, but im still gonna stick with it for the next few weeks. Going by the video put up by the manufacturer, you put in bud that has just been picked apart by your fingers. Im going to try grinding some up nice and fine, as per a youtuber's advice, and see if this helps.

I have actually sent Justin from Red-Eye an email about the Alivi8 and asked for some advice, Im sure he is a busy man, but i haven't gotten a reply yet.

Hey dude, welcome. Watched your vid the other day. I've been playing with the Alivi8 for a couple of weeks now. It's a tricky one and I've not managed a 'perfectly' vaped bowl yet. It's got a design issue in that you inspect the loaded bud from the rear, rather than the front end which is heated. Which is fine for a pipe, but not a vape where you want to check the cooking progress of your load- I can only see the green, less vaped bud at the back! It does work, but hard not to over cook, and v hard to thoroughly vape a load- alway seems to be a bit more that could be vaped out. I keep meaning to do a proper review with pics.... one day soon.

But I have found it to be best with medium ground material, and really not packed into the bowl at all- just loosely dropped in- I've had to really resist the temptation to use the little poker to tamp down the load. Pleasurable as is is to do (for some reason), it seems to lead to easy burning. :2c:

Yes it does reach 277 degrees celcius, but I recommend using the extract and getting the parts kit...shaving down one of the Foam Cakes and dripping it onto there. This Method works EXCELLENT with all extracts.

This is Dan From vaporgenie. A customer alerted us to this thread. After reading it, I thought it would be a good idea to respond to comments made by EYE1DER, the Alivi8 manufacturer, and explain a few things about this product. We have purchased, used and inspected the Alivi8, and have some important things to say about it.

EYE1DER made the claim that "it functions similar to vaporgenie in so much it uses a lighter but the similarities end there..." This is false and misleading. The Alivi8 Functions EXACTLY like the VaporGenie, and in fact it violates our US patent (US Patent 7,434,584), and the patents we have in other countries. We do not have a patent in the UK so they are free to make and sell the Alivi8 in the UK. Like the VaporGenie vaporizing pipes, the Alivi8 uses a filter between the flame and herbs in a manner designed to mix flame exhaust and ambient air. Consequently, the Alivi8 infringes our US patent. You can read the patent for details.

However, there are several differences in design and performance between the Alivi8 and the VaporGenie. The most important difference is that the Alivi8 uses a METAL foam filter instead of a CERAMIC filter. The filter in the Alivi8 is made of "FeCrAlY" alloy, an alloy of iron, chromium, aluminum and (optionally) Yttrium. This is a commercially available metal alloy used in industrial applications requiring high heat resistance. In our opinion, FeCrAlY alloy is poor choice for the flame filter, because, despite its temperature resistance, it DOES oxidize and release metal fumes This is particularly a problem with torch lighters, which burn hotter. But even with a candle butane flame, the FeCrAlY filter discolors, indicating oxidation. Typically, maximum use temperatures for FeCrAlY alloys are in the range of about 1100-1350C. At or above these temperatures, FeCrAlY alloys oxidize and produce metal fumes. I have personally heated FeCrAlY materials to these temperatures and observed the fumes and oxidation. The FeCrAlY changes color and texture. Butane flames can produce temperatures up to about 1300C maximum. So, it is clear that FeCrAlY flame filters can oxidize and produce metal fumes if used with butane flames. By comparison, the silicon carbide used in VaporGenie pipes is guaranteed not to oxidize up to about 1650C, a temperature that cannot be reached by butane flames. And even if it does oxidize slightly, the silicon oxide produced is adherent (so its not inhaled) and nontoxic and the carbon dioxide produced is nontoxic. Silicon carbide does not contain metals and therefore will not produce metal fumes no matter what the temperature. Silicon carbide is clearly the better choice.

When I was originally developing the VaporGenie pipe back in 2002 and 2003, I experimented with FeCrAlY and similar materials. I observed metal fumes and oxidation. Consequently, I decided not to use FeCrAlY-type alloys in the VaporGenie.

Also, FeCrAlY foams are very soft and fragile. They are more easily damaged than the silicon carbide filters used in the VaporGenie.

One significant design problem with the Alivi8 device is that the FeCrAlY filter is very close to the flame input end of the pipe. It is only recessed about 1/4 inch. Consequently, it is difficult to keep the flame off the filter. Soot deposition is the result. And if soot is deposited on the FeCrAlY filter, burning it off with a propane torch will cause severe oxidation of the FeCrAlY. FeCrAlY is simply not designed for exposure to the high temperatures required for soot removal. By comparison, all vaporgenie pipes have deeply recessed filters so that its easy to avoid touching the flame to the ceramic filter. The newly redesigned classic VG pipes have filters recessed by about 1 full inch (and are removable for cleaning). Soot is easily burned off silicon carbide without harming the filter.

The Alivi8 marketing materials claim that the pipe is made of "the finest medical grade stainless steel". This is a strange claim. For use in a smoking pipe, there is no functional difference between the different alloys of stainless steel, except for possibly 316, which has exceptional corrosion resistance and is very expensive. But alloys 304, 303 and 302 (all very similar or sometimes even identical due to overlapping composition tolerances) can also be used in medical applications, so these are all "medical grade". We use 302 stainless in our SS coil pipes and wireforms, 303 stainless in our stainless bats and 316 for our screens. But we dont mislead our customers and hype our products with meaningless claims of using "finest medical grade" stainless steel. Nowhere does Alivi8 specify which stainless steel alloy they are using. So perhaps they can explain what, exactly, they mean by "the finest medical grade stainless steel"? If they are using 316 (or some other exotic alloy) they deserve credit, if they are not, they are jerking people around and being misleading. Alloys 302, 303 and 304 are all regular, plain-old "medical grade" stainless steel.

Another issue we noticed with the Alivi8 is that the screen placement creates problems. There are two places to put the screen. The upper location causes the screen to fall out when the bowl is dumped. The other, lower location positions the screen directly on top of the bowl flow hole, causing it to block airflow through the pipe. It is unclear to us where the screen is supposed to be, since both locations are problematic. The Alivi8 came to us with the screen in the upper position, where it falls out all the time. This issue is easily remedied with a wireform for holding the screen in place.

Alivi8 emphasizes the importance of the serpentine-path for cooling vapors. At VaporGenie, we have experimented with such cooling features but decided that they create more problems than they solve. Specifically, cooling the vapor makes it difficult for a user to monitor the temperature in the pipe because the temperature of the inhaled air is not an indication of the temperature applied to your herbs. We found that users could control the pipe temperature most effectively if there is rapid temperature feedback to the user. Without this temperature feedback (i.e. with a cooling mechanism), users are unaware of the temperature in the bowl, and they wind up overheating and burning. If some people prefer having a vapor cooling mechanism , please let us know and we will be happy to design a product with a cooling feature. But be careful what you ask for, because a cooling feature will make the temperature more difficult to monitor and control.

A the risk of appearing too sensitive, I'd like to criticize the makers of the Alivi8 for copying our marketing materials and writing. The language they use is sometimes nearly identical to what we wrote about the VaporGenie. Here are some examples:

"many years of satisfying vaporization"
"When used properly the Alivi8 produces very little tar"
"If you inhale smoke then the temperature is too high"

The folks at Alivi8 were apparently unable to write an original description of their product on their own. They copied our product AND our writing.

I hope this helps people understand more about whats going on with the Alivi8.

Wow! After all these years, the VaporGenie people show up here! Welcome to FC Dan, VG :)

I am a VG owner and love the stuff you make, but I think you guys would inspire more confidence if the first post from the Official VaporGenie account was NOT the one that slams a competitor for patent infringement. Patents help the inventors and investors (maybe) but not the customer. Patent infringements are your problem not the customers'. :/ From where I come, the common knowledge to fend competition is to obsolete yourself faster than anyone else can. Just my :2c:
