Anyone starting to hate young people?

I blame the hip-hop.

not sure if I'm allowed to post here, lol, but I'm only 20, and I feell you OP. for the past 2-3 years, I've had a difficult time associating with others my own age. I find the level of immaturity to be un-parallel when comparing my self to others of my age range. Just my maybe i'm not as mature as I think I am...


Regardless, I feel welcomed here, and am happy to have found one of the more adult-based mentality, and ganja related/focused communities on the web!

I don't hate young people at all....although teenagers I'm not so fond of after having a couple myself...

But there is no doubt that the attitude of the majority of "the youth" has changed. I worked in the school system for many years and can tell you that kids today are much ruder than they used to be. Whether this is a product of many kids being latch key children or whether it is the media that they are exposed to, or a combination of both, I'm not sure. What I do know is that kids today spend way more time on electronic driven devices (tv, computers, gaming systems) than outside playing or socializing. I think that what they are exposed to on tv, etc. is shaping them and many are left alone or with day care for long periods of time during the day because both parents are working. This only leaves a few hours a day with your children. And those few hours are usually spent........watching tv, etc. We've also become much more casual of a society (as the older generations die out) and those social rules that many of us grew up with (I'll pick. "don't wear your hat in the house" as an example) are going by the wayside. The looser we get with our "rules" the looser our kids get.

Hmm almost 30 years old... and yes sometimes lost with the youth.
I practice freebord and am one of the old-school riders. Very frecuently, as it is still a "young" sport we have sessions with really young riders...and that's when I understand I'm gettin' old...No offense at all for thes young, I'm the only one to blame!

They are wearing slim pants, flashy colors, love pop rock & tecktonik ...I am lost LOL
You know that's when U know you're getting older: when you feel you're stuck with some specific style of things and when "new stuff/habits" aren't that attractive any more (sometimes U can't even understand their aesthetic choices!!!).
Now I am a baggy-hoody old school classics seeker, haha!

And Charlie, I consider myself no more as a youth BUT I live with & through HIP-HOP!!!
In fact "real" hip-hop, I mean the whole cultural movement created by minorities via conscious political & social musical poetry-rage through different mediums (MC, graph, dance...), from middle of the 80's to end of the 90's, mostly...
VS.
Actual boomboom-blingbling no message RAP, where U just auto-tune your voice and you've got a "massive commercial hit" (yes there are still some few "old school" type jewels produced these days...I know...exceptions do confirm da rule!)


Oh and don't say it too loud, but I think I like getting older...hihi

There are definitely some advantages to getting older. Wisdom for one thing! There's some truth to the old saying, "Youth is wasted on the young."

I'm not sure if the OP was a joke but vilifying hip-hop in this way is just so disappointing, rather reductionist and out of context if you ask me. If its a joke its not for me, it its not, I think you've unfairly thrown a culture under the bus that you must not be familiar with.


As for the youth these days, what older generation hasn't complained about the youth? Elvis and the Beatles were too risque in their time and of course thats a consistent trend. Personally, I continually see great promise in youth culture, maybe you're not looking hard enough....


And lastly, I've never been one to see wisdom as a function of age. Getting older does NOT make you wiser from my perspective

I think most young people have no respect for older people, and that makes me angry. I can't stand disrespect.

I am 24 and am sympathetic to those older folks who think that today's youth lacks respect and social graces - it's true! I consciously make overt efforts to show my humble deference to those who are older and wiser.

But do remember that today's youth has grown up in front of computer/tv screens. think about it, 20 hours a week staring at a computer = no social real world interaction. Dialing into digital media is like an altered state of consciousness. People feel less accountable for their actions in a reality that they are only sometimes involved with.

Sigh....I wish emotional intelligence were taught in schools.

Everyone's generation always talks about "today's youth" being wilder, ruder, generally less civilised than their own used to be. I think you'll find your grandparents very likely said the same about you.

As a student of History I can state that this seems to be a cyclical occurrence, having happened ever since there were young people and old people, i.e. forever.
Every ageing generation talks about a 'golden age' or something similar when they used to be young "without all these damn whipper-snappers running about!"

I'm not saying that today's youth aren't wilder, ruder and generally less civilised than the previous generation, but I am saying that you have to apply some perspective to the issue.
When I am 60+ I'm sure I'll be moaning and groaning about what music kids will be listening to, about how much better behaved we all were when we were young etc.

Yes there's certainly a sense of declining morals and manners, but again I shall say, there has always been! From 17th Century gentry complaining that the youth of their day were indulging in the new habits of drinking coffee and reading newspapers (the horror, the shame!) to 1920s/30s born parents complaining about LSD, Cannabis and black people in the 1960s. (Excuse the generalisations, but the point remains.)

Guess what, most young people are immature! They don't want to learn the responsibilities and wisdoms that usually only come with age, they're too busy thinking up new ways to piss you off!

They might well be annoying, but they're going to be the ones running the country, developing new technology, and giving you medical care when you're too old and decrepit to move around any more.

It's just life. The same issues have been around since before BC/AD was even conceived of. If every generation is 'worse' than its previous, then how have we made it to the year 2010 without blowing up the entire planet? Oh right I forgot, young people grow up! Most of them anyway...

Edit: Now to wait for the expected cliched negative responses... Just like I would reply if I was an older member of society reading this. Proves my point quite nicely in fact.

TOTALLY agree with this. Older generations have been complaining about younger generations since the beginning of time and it happens in every culture around the world, so why shouldn't the current crop of kids get the same treatment.

And blaming it on the music is nothing new either. I remember very well a radio station steamrolling over Elvis records because it was the "devils" music and it was going to be the ruination of the younger generation.

No shit. Just look at some of the old politicians out there and tell me that "older" makes you wiser. The only thing being older does is give you more opportunity to become wiser. But it also gives you more opportunity to become more of an idiot.

I COMPLETELY agree. I connot understand how that crap passes as entertainment these days. I think you would have to be mentally disturbed to enjoy watching it.
Have to laugh though because I always seem to catch intelligent people watching it.

I like young people and I'm ok with any genre of music, incl rap etc, if the music is a sincere expression of feelings. Oftentimes it's the parents of youngsters (you know, the ones that think parenting means placing em in front of a big ol tv, buying video games for them, and when confronted with their kid's misdeeds insisting they can do no wrong) that tick me off.

In my opinion there are 3 vital things a child needs is proper parenting, proper education, and a proper environment to live in. Sadly our Nation's education system is pitiful, we have some of lowest test scores in the world (ranked #33) and yet we continue to cut their funds and neglect our teachers. That topped with the fact that both parents are forced to work because of our economy, their children aren't being raised by their parents or taught values and right from wrong. If you really look at the past 35-45 years, this trend is what had led us to where we are now, our countrys young people are our future and we need to invest in them appropriately.

a thought: just like our skin, internal organs and such our brains also age and it could be that as we get older its not just "wiser" but perhaps the slow decay of cells and irregularity in cell reproduction causes us to change how we view many things...including the severity of adolescent behavior.

anyhow, i dont hate "young people" and that includes the very young and the not so young. take each as they are.

And when you start to hate young people, that's when you start to become old in your head..careful of the dark side here

Well, lets blame the invention of hygiene and electricity for starters...

I was just thinking about the commercials that remind people to do the right thing. I remember one in particular that takes place on a bus. An older woman is standing up, and there is a young guy sitting down. He looks at her a couple times, then gets up and asks her if she would like his seat.

I think it's pretty sad when people need to be reminded to be compassionate.

i don't hate young people, i dislike most people.
