Ok, so I've got a bic technique in progress: tilt the hole so that it's slightly angled down, hold the lighter to the side so that the blue part of the flame is right next to the middle of the hole. Medium breath intake. This is working for me, though I'm still not great at it.

Once I've got that down, I'll play with the torch lighter more.... after clearing my head for a few hours.

A torch lighter will not work with the bat. The ceramic is recessed too far for a torch flame to hit it.

how can it be too far for a torch? I don't have a bat btw but always use a torch with my VG, and I hold the torch pretty far away(every visible part of the flame outside the hole), much farther then I would hold a regular flame

The ceramic element is much closer to the mouthpiece part than the flame hole. Using a torch will only heat the outer housing. A candle flame lighter is a must for the bat.

I think you might find that you have a bit more success with a torch as (IMO) its a bit easier to control how much flame you get consistently. With the bic, the flame has more of a tendency to 'dance' around the intake hole. With a microtorch you have more of a risk of combustion, but if you can find the 'sweet spot' of distance it works like a charm. :D
could you please go into more detail on using a torch with the bat? ive only had success with a bic.

I don't use a VG bat myself, but I remember reading in this thread that someone pointed their torch lighter so that the flame went across the opening instead of INTO the opening. It seems like a long shot, but he said it worked..I will try to find the post and quote it here if I can find it

Edit: I couldn't find it; maybe I was just imagining it..sorry :(
I wish I could be of some help, but I don't have much experience with the bat

That was me who said that. I shoot the flame perpendicular to the hole. the hole being centered around the middle of the flame, flame held about a centimeter away. I then inhale, which sucks just heat and not the flame into the hole. So the main part of the flame body is over the hole thus giving more access to the heat it has. I have had nice big hits, even combusted a few times. the top part does get warmer than using a candle, but not as warm as it would if you aim the flame into the hole.
The flame will curve a bit, if it curves enough to touch the actual body I raise the flame higher from the hole. I have tried aiming the flame into hole, body heats up way too much to attempt it that way. I would say that using the torch across the hole would heat it up the housing as much as a really long hit taken with candle flame. Aiming it right in the hole would heat the aluminum housing up twice that much if not more.

however i dunno if this technique would work with the smaller torches... i use one of the ones thats a bit bigger but not huge.

So I would say that you can vape with a Torch Lighter with the VG Bat. It is possible. Just a slightly different learning curve. If i had to choose between the two I would choose the candle flame over the torch for ease of use. Only reason I figured out how to use a torch is because I got stuck at work without a lighter one day, and all I had was a torch for my heat source.... so I adapted.

I have trashed the aluminum bat in the past, but I feel I should recant. Apparently, most of my problems came because I didn't know wtf I was doing, in spite of the tips offered on FC.
It's still not my favorite, but I was wrong to think it was a hot, worthless piece of alu. In fact, you can get some really big rips from it- if you know what to do! I use a pretty full bowl, sand like grind, Bic lighter, and a medium toke with the flame approx 5-7 sec, slower toke as I feel the vapor gathering. Boom, works pretty fucking good.

Would the people of this thread recommend an aluminium bat as a starter vape?

Was initially looking at the vapestar but would prefer portability and not using a bong, and I'm on a budget so can't stretch to a LB.

If you have enough money, go for one of the handcarved models, or even the aluminum pipe, those will be a great starter or even a daily vape, really.

I was looking at the hand carved ones before I noticed the bat, but the bat got my interest since it's not as blatantly a pipe and has a less obtrusive design. What makes you recommend the others over the bat?

I'm in England so unfortunately I'm very limited in what's I can actually buy, can only find classic and bat at UK shops so far, don't want to import due to customs.

IMHO, I don't think the Bat is a good starter vape-- Especially if you plan to use it as the only method of consuming MJ. Mainly being that it gets so hot so easily.. Even the original pipe might be a better choice, in my eyes.

I agree that the bat wouldn't be my first choice. I have had a classic vg for a few years and it was my only piece for a year. I couldn't be happier with it. I've had a circle of 6 friends pass around the vg for about 30 minutes and four or five bowls. Not once did someone set the bowl on fire and everyone had a great experience. In that situation, or even alone at times, the bat will get too hot.

The bat is a bit smaller and more stealth but I've never had a problem with the classic. If I'm in a park I'll just have a friend smoke a cigarette and I'll pull out the VG for a few tokes. I've also pulled the vg out in a bar and taken a few hits with my torch lighter. No one seems to even take notice.

Good luck man, I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever one you choose.

Thanks for the advice you two, I'll do a bit more searching and see what I can find in UK shops.

Import VAT and handling fees were stupidly high last time I imported anything from the USA, around 12 on top of what I had already paid for a couple of t shirts and posters, and VAT has risen since then. Although I guess I could factor that into the overall cost, buying in dollars would be considerably cheaper initially.

Take your time deciding which vape to get.. and how/where you buy it.

Since I own the VG bat I used it too many times, but I still have some problems with it.
The flame hole, the bowl and the mouthpiece hole are too wide, so it requires big quantities of herb, and a big flame (I need a new lighter everytime the flame turns smaller).
Whenever I try to use a smaller flame, I can't get any visible vapor, and I can't load little quantities. For these reasons, my Ubie ($10 vaporizer) is way better, because it is very thin, I can load very little quantities (like 0.05g) and vape it all with a small flame, until it turns dark-brown.
With the bat it is impossible to me, I have tried every tecnique but nothing works.
I have found a little trick that helps me a bit (but it doesn't solve the problem), it consists in keeping the top of the flame on the side of the hole nearest to the bowl, not in the centre of it.
I accept any tips to optimize the consume, and to use it with small/medium flames.
Thanks
Hey I was wondering if you have the aluminum vapor genie bat and if you think the improved aluminum insulation works on the new bat. I just got it and have been vaping kush mainly with a little bit of tobacco. I was also wondering how long does it take you to finish your bowl. I want to talk about techniques for vaping with the vapor genie and personally what I do is keep some of the used bud in there and it serves as a cushion for new herb I've been doing little bits at a time but I know that it works best when you fill it up. I was also wondering just everybody that reads this how much do you vape your herb until you decide its done?

Man I forgot how nice the bat could be with a decent lighter. I was using what I thought would be a good electric lighter, but it turned out to be crap, and just recently got replaced it with something better and wow such better hits.

I think when I had my VG Bat I treated it like a toy.. I'd really like to purchase another one now that I understand the technique and capabilities. (I've been using HVGs and AVGs for a year)

I plan to make a kit like this :

Wide medicine bottle, horse pill size. (Everything is inside this, packed tight)
VG Bat, in two pieces.
2 small round tins, ABV vs. fresh.
Silver mini Bic, hemp wick wrapped around
Little stick for stirring bowl.

I think with the right pill bottle and positioning it should fit nice and snug.. making an under $60 portable vaping kit :)

You guys think everything would fit? What else should I add? Other suggestions?

Water bottle.

Kidding. As long as all the fresh bud is pre ground, it sounds pretty sweet. I used to keep my wood vg with everything I needed in a starbucks cup.

Aw you're setup sounds nice :) You should definitely post pictures!!

How has the starbucks cup held up? I love that idea but I'm worried it will become damaged quickly. Also a cup isn't as smell proof as a medicine case.

I just use the insidepocket of my jacket to keep it all(a photofilmcontainer for weed, a grinder, my handcarved VG in the protective bag, with a torch lighter in the fresh-keeping pocket, and sometimes also my stone combustion pipe and a BBQ lighter, 2 metal rods for stirring, I have plenty wich come from an electric flyzapper, and sometimes a 2nd container wth another strain, I rarely keep a container for AVB, when I'm out I just throw it in the ashtray)
I mostly have this woth me on saturdaynight to the bar, me and my friends always go to a bar that ignores the smoking-ban(wich only aplies to tobacco), and it's also allowed to smoke weed inside there
and it's a metalbar, and me and most of my friends are metalhead(and partly hippie, altough part of our group is also rightwing in their poltical view, it's mostly me and one friend who are the real leftwing hippies in our group)
