Grams to cooking measurement conversion?

I don't have a scale but I was wondering if there is an easy way to convert grams to measuring cups for baking. I was going tio use the Sam Jackson guide to making canabutter and would like to know how much ABV I should use in relation to butter.

Thanks

three level tablespoons of ABV powdered in a coffee grinder = 10 grams.

Glad you had an answer Herbgirl... Grams is a weight measurement while cups is a volume measurement.

I was scratching my head on that one ROFL!!

i actually weighed because it i'm making taffy tonight and happened to have a bowl of ABV sitting on the counter!
lo, you are correct - there is no exact conversion because it depends upon the grind and how tightly it's packed. less ground up material might be three heaping tablespoons instead of level ones.

ahhh the things you learn by baking from scratch :)

I knew it was an apples to oranges comparison but didn't know how to phrase it differently. Regardless thanks for the conversion herbgirl. Also were you the one that posted about water treatment on the ABV to remove some of the "weed" taste? If so, do you grind first, then treat, or vice versa. My Abv is not a fine grind right now.

Thanks again

yup, that was me
i ground first then treated i think :uhoh: but i didn't have the coffee grinder then either, that may be too fine.

haven't done that again as i am finding tinctures/candies to be a better method of ingestion for me. the brownies were nice, but just too long lasting. more of something for a camping trip or the like where you can be incapacitated for a while. :ko:

I normally wouldnt have an opportunity to cook ABV because it's not an option at my house due to various reasons but mainly the smell (I don't live with my parents:lol:) but I will have a chance to make butter at a friends place in a few weeks so I thought I would use all my ABV (about an ounce) to make a bunch of butter to cook with periodically. All that said is it worth it to water cure it in that case? Also, what is the shelf life on potency of the butter if I store it in my fridge/freezer.

Thanks again

if you don't want the weedy flavor, by all means water cure it, but the step with adding the butter to the water may make this unnecessary. not sure. probably, since you are discarding the water and the spent herb. i wanted to use the spent herb in the brownie so i wanted as much weedyness pulled out as possible.

Butter, if not previously frozen, will last quite a while in the freezer. at least six months for salted butter i would think. unsalted butter maybe four months in the freezer. probably longer in a deep freezer. wrap it very very tight as fat tends to absorb flavors that you don't want it to. blech (makes me think of when Homer ate the baking soda from the fridge "it's like the taste of a thousand meals"mmmmmm) Chinese food flavored butter is not good. trust me.

If you plan to use it a bit at a time, save yourself some hassle and find a way to portion it. ice cube trays, muffin tins, even pouring in a pan, freezing a bit, scoring into blocks and wrapping each individually.

otherwise you will find yourself chipping away at a frozen mass of butter. good way to lose a finger.

keep in mind, making tincture using the leaching method does not smell :)

Thanks. Ive never tried a tincture. I'll look into that. Easy/fast to make? Recommended recipe? I'm sure I can find all kinds on the forum but if anything off the top of your head grabs you, I'll give out a shot. Thanks for the wisdom.

for tincture stuff, start with the golden dragon thread.
can be fast or slow depending upon the method. some states don't sell grain alcohol, so that may be a factor.

you can also use glycerin to tincture. you could also make an infused oil. or even a vinegar. the possibilities are endless. you have come to the right place to ask questions!

@ hery happy

I used to make tincture with trimmings after harvest. Now I have bottles of it lying around the house. Its great to help with insomnia (which I have nightly). I'm new to the forum, so not sure if it has been mentioned before, but I enjoy using Everclear or for some real fun flavors, ABSINTHE as the alcohol base for the tincture. The ABSINTHE adds a really unique taste to the tincture.

I'm also looking to start utilizing my ABV for cooking. We just started vaping a few weeks ago after two decades of smoking. I've made lots of Medibles with fresh medicine, but never with ABV. Interested to see the difference in effect.

I'm actually thinking about separating the ABV based upon what temp it is vaped at to see the effects of Medibles made with different temped ABV.

Anyone done this?

oh yeah... where is this taffy recipe? mmmmm.... taffy

Thank you Herb Girl! I'm a-gonna be baking tonight (pun definitely intended!)

Making taffy tonight and possibly some other goodies! I think my absinthe tincture will
make some delicious "cough drops" if I can find a good recipe! That and a hot water vapor
bong and my cold should be a thing of the past.

Off to hunt for some good recipes! I love this site!

subliminal, check out the candymaking thread for some tips on your cough drops. too much tincture and they will be sticky and hard to handle.

http://fuckcombustion.com/viewtopic.php?id=3650

if you are actually looking to make cough drops, like a menthol-y type thing you could try using lorann oils peppermint candy flavoring. it's PUNCHY!

I'm still attempting to perfect my horehound, wild cherry bark and eucalyptus cough drops. they keep coming out too sticky.

and speaking of hot vapor bong, you may want to try adding 1 (and only one) small drop of peppermint essential oil to the water as well. i remember doing this many moons ago and it works well, but proceed with caution as peppermint is very strong and everyone has different tolerance levels for this type of stuff.

Thanks again herbgirl. Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine up north who is heading to humboldt in two weeks. Gonna get a few zips of trim for experimentation. I will take lots of pictures and post. For now, playing with the ABV I've collected in the first month of vaping. Also been sitting on some tincture I made a while back after a harvest. Going to reduce those and try some experimenting with the reduced tincture hash.

That same buddy makes wax and is going to teach me when we get the trimmings. He swears by the stuff. He gave up smoking herb and just smokes wax... I told him combustion is still combustion!

EDIT.... I COOKED LAST NIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH ABV!! YAY!

So, I made Rocky Road CannaFudge. Recipe is super simple. Buy a small container of FLUFF (why didn't I think of a peanut butter and fluff sandwich? I could have made peanut butter fluff firecrackers... next time). I think it is also called Marshmallow Creme. The recipe is on the back! Already recycled the container, so I will post the recipe next time I make them. It calls for 3/4 cup of butter so I used Samuel Jackson's Cannabutter recipe and made a stick and a half of butter with 14g ABV. I added a random gram of some reduced tincture also during the boil proccess to add a little strength. The fudge came out killer. Wife and I woke up still stoned.

I also played around with candies. I made mint sucking candies and learned a VALUABLE LESSON. I bought these awesome mini ice cube trays at Bed BAth & BEyond. They were squares about 10cm by 10cm. Awesome for square sucking candies. What I did not realize is that it was not heat proof. Some of the plastic melted around the cooling candy. My bad! Lesson learned! Buy actual candy molds! Luckily, this was my practice batch made with my weak tincture. I used the Candy recipe that Herb Girl linked above. I also found a fun use for the saucepan after finishing the candy. Add about two cups of water to the sauce pan. Heat the water while stirring. All of the candy caked to the side of the pan will boil into the water, cleaning the pan and creating a delicious and potent tea to drink.

Second batch of candies was made with a High Potency Tincture a friend made me for my wedding. I followed the candy recipe, but this time used heat resistant small circular finger bowls as molds. There were 20 in total. I used 1/4cup tincture per recipe along with 1/2 teaspoon strawberry extract, 1/2 teaspoon banana extract and dash of red food coloring. I want a bit more flavor next time around so I may add 1 teaspoon of each flavor. ANYONE KNOW if that will change texture? I would assume an extra teaspoon of extract could soften the final product? Made a really yummy strawberry banana tea from the saucepan stickies. Lollipops look great. I'm not a good test subject as I am 420 24/7, so I will be having a friend test them out tonight. Will post results later.

Once I get the trim I ordered, I will start my own cooking thread with pictures and videos. THIS IS FUN!

they will mix, and it will be sweeter, but the honey will of course weaken your tincture. plan accordingly to how far you evaporate it down after straining.

I don't think honey will weaken it. The honey tincture I made is as potent as my alcohol tincture.

I just made mine this week from some abv. it definitely medicates but I didn't use enough honey, so it is not as sweet as I had hoped.

when I attempt this again, I will make my alcohol tincture first and evaporate it down. Once I have it to where 1-2 ml is equivalent to about .5g, I will combine it with 2 parts honey over a double boiler on low heat. You could also put ib a tablespoon of lemon juice.

I think the taste would have been better had I used something fresh. I think abv tinctures are just not going to taste great.

Tuck,

FLskwat

VAPOLITICS!
If I don't let the abv too long in the jar with alcohol, if this process is done in the freezer (stirring the jar content every 5 mn for like 30-40 mn) + filtering instantly with a 2 layers old cotton T shirt and I get a green mixture out of my fairly brown ABV and the taste & flavor of MJ is there...It always impresses me, and I really think the timing of the thc extraction is an essencial factor! The longer... the more ABV particulates... the taste degradation increases...my 2x :2c: !

i just want to make a everclear tincture that tastes ok,, thanks everyone,,, love all the ideas, maybe i need to just make it and go from there,,

Honestly... anything you add to it 'may' help mask the taste but then also increases the amount you have to take. I tried a few things and it never tasted any better! One thing I have found that can kill the taste of nearly anything is grape juice. If I sip grape juice as a chaser it helps get rid of the taste well but... shit still tastes FUNKY

I am not an alcohol fan either so I'm liking making hard candies with the everclear tincture or for oral consumption the glycerin tincture.

Fun to experiment and you never know what you'll discover...keep playing.
