Venus Vaporizer

Internal vapor air path, well, the fresh air comes in from the hole on the back panel of the vaporizer, there is a metal screen filter. Inside the vaporizer there are air paths machined to the wooden frame. The heating element is metal tube and inside it is the halogen bulb with ceramic base fitted to the metal tube. The lamp or metal tube don't touch any wooden parts, only things touching this heating element are the ceramic base of bulb and the anodized aluminum plate on top of vaporizer supports the position of element. There are no chemicals used to hold things down, all things are kept in place with mechanical connections.

So the cold air comes in and there are airways machined to the wooden frame, but then it goes trough the heating element and the bowl is placed on top of that. Vapor is coming from the bowl as the user inhales, and the vapor can be seen in the glass jar and it cools down there and the vapor path continues down again about 15 mm trough the wood frame and then there is medical grade silicone tube which should have heat resistance well enough for the vapor at this point!

I have sold few units already in Finland, and customers have been very satisfied and happy. One of them uses herb for medical purposes, Multiple Sclerosis, and has used Volcano for years and tried many different portables, but none of them has been good enough but he wrote that this Venus Vaporizer is very good and wanted to make a review, here is a link to his blog, some pics he has there also:

and google translated version, not good but at least something I can understand :p

I'm serious about the USB port. If it's truely a convection device and there's a microcontroller in it i find it would be regrettable not to use this opportunity to offer potential customers a chance to explore a new dimension in vaporization: software-assisted vaporization! At least, lets consider it as an option...

Do you mean like the Zephyr had? What benefit do you see a USB providing, as in what would be it's purpose?

Controlling it through the computer would give the vaporizer remote control like capabilities, rather like the Extreme. But, for example you could supposedly program temperature profiles into the vaporizer, have it shut off automatically, etc.

Hi VilleKille2,

Thank you for posting this on YouTube:

The air path is now easier for me to figure out, which brings my next question actually: wouldn't it be more convenient for the tubing to pass through the front opening, penetrating into the chamber directly? In fact, i'd rather have the vapor tubing connected to the glass jar itself as i'm worried about the need for future "maintenance" (the clean up thing that comes after vaporizing)... Wood is porous, i'd certainly wouldn't want my vapor to go through any wooden channel, accessible or not!

yes, I think you are right! Also someone else on Finnish Forum asked me about this cleaning, I thought it is not a big deal that there is about 15mm of wooden channel, 10mm diameter...and then there is the tube which one can clean. But I understand that all parts which come in contact with vapour will have some condensation going on, and small micro particles of herb and in years it will maybe cause some problems, smell maybe? I just need to think if I can find a way to make it cleanable...it is now quite easy to make, there is a hole drilled under that small hole on the top of vaporizer...and then from the front plate there is a hole drilled which connects these airways and then a tube is installed to the hole which is behind the front plate...so this is something I need to think how it should be done...

Hi VilleKille2,

I understand there's a tube behind the holes which connects them from inside but this tube too will require maintenance, eventually. I'd suggest you just loosely join the holes with a tubing guide instead, similarily to this:

A gently bent piece of metal should do fine, it would allow the Venus owner to manage with the whole vapor path issues easily. Initial installation would be done by pushing the tube inside until its end emerges into the containment chamber, i believe that would render cleaup/replacement conveniently straightforward and implementation won't cost you million$...

Pop! Just pop...

It appears many of us here believe we should "applaud innovation" and i'm one of those guys so, please, allow me to make that one pop out of the pile in hope we hear more from the manufacturer!

Here is new video with English language audio track,

http://youtu.be/qVMCD-FMVp4

I have also updated website with photos of the new herb chamber, it is very good and solved problems I had with the vaporizer, only problem is very high cost as it is machined from highest grade stainless steel and these machining companies take quite a lot of money for their services, but at least those parts when you get them on your hands, look like they are from some very expensive industrial machine and I guess they are almost indestructable :D

Also found new chargers which cut charging time to only 30 minutes, which is quite nice in my opinion :) Also updated electronics so that battery cells are always balanced which should mean that the capacity of battery will stay high for long time even if the other one starts to wear quicker.

Right now I decided to make also faceplates from Stainless steel with Laser engravings, should be even cooler looking then, than anodized aluminum, and the main frame used to be from multiple pieces but now I found a way to make it from one solid block of Scandinavian Birch wood, I have a feeling that even if you threw this vaporizer against a wall, it would still work as well as it did before that :D

here's link to english language part of my website:

Kinda big at worst, probably less cumbersome than a DBV, although you do have to handle this puppy and not leave it on a desk.

I absolutely love the whole concept of halogen powered vaporizers and have always been on the lookout for a small, hot, high intensity lamp to make one myself. Have you guys considered a longer, more flexible tubing w a glass mouthpiece, ala the DBV or SSV? This way you could leave it on the table, or even hook it up to glass.

I don't how big the batteries are or how large the bulb is, but have you considered downsizing the whole thing or making an entirely different model for more portability? Something halogen based with a slim, pocketable build, with a much smaller vapor dome? Just dreaming here. And hey, does the finnish birch taste like xylitol?

I'm very interested in this and any halogen vape and might end up buying it at launch.

first off I would like to say welcome to the forum and it's great to see another vape inventor on the site!

in that 2nd video is it purely just marijuana in the bowl? if not, can you please post a video of your unit producing vapor without any lavender oil added? the thickness from that first vid was amazing, but I am wondering how much of that is from the added oil?

the tune in your updated video is very catchy and pretty kick ass! love the synth! :p

welcome to FC, the best vape site around :)

Thanks :) I really have to make a new video sometime, this is quite old and doesn't yet have the new stainless steel herb chamber and coloured smaller glass top also missing.

But yeah, there is lavender oil in the first part where the vapor thickness is so...THICK that I just couldn't even inhale it :D But the last part of video, where vapor is coming and song playing louder, it is only pure MJ, after taking those 2-3 hits I just had to stop my filming session as I couldn't work after that, too much for my tolerances , it is hard work to try to show vapors :D

ahh ok, I will watch the video over again. thank you for clearing that up for me. :)

hard work, but i'm sure you are willing to take one for the team in the name of science and sales! :brow:

are you an everyday kinda toker? incidentally i use a kuksa to hold my stems when i separate my buds for busting. my sister did a semester out of university in lahti and brought me one back from a trip to lapland. she told me the landscape suits me and i'd love it out there. I love birch wood's properties for preservation from the oils it contains. Such a great wood.

Yes, actually the tubing can be as long as needed, I have bought very big reel of this stuff so I am including a long piece of it so the customer can cut it to preferred length :)

But unfortunately, so far I have not found any sources for glass mouthpieces, it would be more elegant than just the tube..

I am surprised that people here feel it is big, yes it is very big compared to smallest vaporizers like MFLB but at least this design, I feel, cannot be made smaller without some big changes in design philosophy...because of the volume of battery cells.

Actually the wooden frame is pushed to its limits as there is in quite tight package everything, hot heating element, and 2 battery cells each having diameter of 26 mm and there has to be some material left to the sides too :D While the heating element doesn't require much space or insulation as the user when inhaling, makes it forced air cooled, the width is currently minimized. Height can possibly be maybe 5 mm lower but that's as far as this design can be shrunk...

The thing is, I started to design this for myself, just to try how a vaporizer would work, without any experiences from vaporizers...actually I still have never used anything else than this my own design so the only feedback I have compared to others is from my customers. So the design goal was not actually a portable vaporizer, but a vaporizer which has the feature of being able to vaporize wirelessly to offer more free and relaxed way to vaporize, but mainly for home/indoor use.

The batteries are large, there are smaller ones but I don't really think it is good idea to use some cheap LiPos which, while having greater volumetric capacity, have often quite limited lifetime and also dangers associated with them in portable, high temperature + different kind of users and usage application..and their charge rate has to be lower, no way to charge other batteries in 30 minutes. While these LiFePo4 - cells are also made in smaller form, their capacity is not enough for this because this heating technique wastes energy more than for example MFLB but it seems to be in life that you have to make some compromises.

The plus side is that this kind of heating with halogen bulb + steel seems to produce very stable vaporizing result when the temp is right, and all the herb is nicely and evenly baked very quickly, and there is very little irritation because the vapor gets some turbulence in the glass bowl which makes all the smallest particles of herbal material to be thrown away and stick to the surface of glass and it makes the vapor almost like water filtered. The downside is of course that gradually some resins start to accumulate to the glass bowl and it has to be washed with warm water + detergent but I still think the loss of active vapors is not huge since it seems to be very effective and anyway all these tubings in vaporizer make up much larger surface area compared to the free flow area inside them.

What I would like to change, is to get more run time from the batteries. The halogen bulb is of course very efficient and doesn't store much energy but the fact that the stainless steel which surrounds the bulb + the herb chamber take quite a lot of energy when they warm up, and it is clear when you shut the vaporizer down, these parts will still be hot some time after wards as they have stored this energy..so I guess if there was a way to make some changes to make this stored heat energy smaller, then the run time would be longer.

There is the metal top plate surrounding the heating element - this seems to be the place where energy is wasted. Sometime I made it very loose fit, so that it didn't touch the heating element and this top metal plate stayed cool during vaporization and I was able to feel how the vaporizer was more quickly ready for vapors, and less power was needed for same results, after all, the metal plate seems to act like a heat sink..The problem is, that this heating element gets its support from this top metal plate, and I haven't found a way to work out this problem...of course it is not a problem, the unit works well already, but it would be even better if I could save the energy wasted on warming up this metal part as it doesn't add anything to the performance, just degrades it. The temperature on the stainless steel part of heating element while vaporizing is about 110-150 degrees Celcius, bulb on the other hand is very hot so I guess it is just a combination of them which gets the air to perfect temp. But still it is hot enough so that it has to be insulated from the wood..I have used just air insulation, nothing to make extra smell /smoke inside, the heating element is "floating" there and this top metal plate supports it that it will be hold straight, so there is some contact and of course heat energy gets transferred from this contact. But it works, and the batteries stay cool, never has this wooded frame got too hot even if I've tried full power 40 minutes without inhaling at all, and durability seems to be good, I have made some tests, to search for its limits in extreme temperature changes, full heating power, placing the unit in the freezer and while frozen charging it again and same thing many times, and I have not had any problems, all works well..I was mostly worried of the natural characteristics of wood, and how it would work when there are big changes in the temperature and moisture but now after 2 years of using these things and after quite extensive stress testing, I feel quite good about this, there has never been any problem or visual change in the wooden frame, even if I've kept one vaporizer outside all summer, and here it is quite cold and wet during night time and daytimes are warm and dry so there was a reason to believe this would have shown weaknesses :)

But so far it has been working nicely and the most important, vapor quality and stability has been very good.

Also in the video and photos I have just a 490ml clear glass bowl on top of the vaporizer, even the coloured glasses on the front page image are just photoshopped version of the same big clear glass. Those new coloured bowls are smaller, 314ml and make it much more compact looking.

For those who are interested in hands free use, the problem is that the most energy efficient way of usage, smallest amount of basic power level chosen with the power dial wheel and pressing Boost when inhaling, is not an option if you want to use it hands free. I have also tested it hands free, and then the power dial wheel is just turned to a little bit higher power level, the only downside then is that waiting too long time between hits can get the vaporizer to warm up too much, and I have been thinking that this could be solved to make it "auto-boost", the user can signal the need for boost simply with the act of inhaling from the tube, and Venus vaporizer would act just as if the boost button had been pressed.

Yeah, I've been actually thinking this too, sometimes I have felt that while going to some place, like city center, I would like to use Venus vaporizer BUT it is too big to be used on the streets etc. too apparent that you are doing something you should not :D

So I have just left it to car always, and thought that a small ultra portable design with similar properties would be fantastic, the run time can be shorter as this wouldn't need to be able to supply that many vaporizing sessions, like 15 min total running time would be enough for this purpose, providing enough hits for one journey in the night. And it would have the option to be recharged in 10-15 min, or then the user could swap recharged batteries on the fly, and take more juice with in case the batteries run out too soon.

I have some ideas and have been making designing already. I think to get smallest thing, there cannot be a vapor dome so it would be kind of direct draw vape without the visual effect of glass, and without the cooler and cleaner vapor result which the glass dome would give, but I guess portability and stealth would be more important. Same technology with Venus would work, I have learned a lot of electronics since starting this project and I think could fit the needed things in very small form factor and as this halogen based heating seems to be very good in practice, quick enough and solid clean results, I would want to use it again. Just a different form, the frame would be slim, and heating element placed completely inside the unit to make it possible to put it back to pocket while it is still hot.

EDIT: I just checked my design drawings, and the idea of my Portable version of Venus would have dimensions of:

width: 76 mm
Length: 88 mm
Height: 35 mm

There is no glass dome, and all the corners and sides are rounded so it actually feels a lot smaller than dimensions, but that is the size I have on my mind. Thickness of 35mm would make it to fit pockets if not perfectly, at least it is possible and lack of glass dome would make it easier to carry around and also to use in stealthy way.

The unit would use similar technique as her bigger sister, similar build quality and materials, heating unit as the original Venus but batteries would be smaller capacity ones, and they can be changed on fly, so it is possible to carry extra batteries if more vaporizing time is needed. No extra charger needed, and same charger can be used which works with the original Venus, and the user can buy extra batteries and charge them inside the unit so there is no need for any additional equipment even if extra batteries are to be used. Recharge time 15-20 min.

Actually I had to stop vaporizing myself as I seemed to be testing the properties of my vape everyday and it made working a little bit inefficient :D So now I feel next round of vaporizing will start when some new updates / model coming :D

Yeah, Lapland is cool, there is a lot of tourist stuff around there, as this is where the local people get money from but they are mostly in the big tourist places, of course if that is your thing, drunken tourists and people selling everything, is your thing that's fine but I prefer to go farther away from these centers, there is magnificent nature and views! And then these lakes with crystal clear water between the magnificent landscapes, full of salmon grown in pure waters and so calm around you..it is something to experience..but I guess in Canada there is something like this and lots of wilderness too!

Birch wood is probably the only really good wood for making beautiful products here, I don't count pine to be one of them :D I've read that the ones grown near lapland, are the best ones as the cold climate makes them grow slower and the wood material will be very good quality, solid and hard but it takes time 3 times more than wood in the south :D

I've thought, while the matte black is good looking on the Venus vaporizer, maybe I should also offer ones without paint, as birch wood, just oiled is very beautiful and also more natural choice, sometimes it almost hurts to spray just paint on this naturally pretty material :D

the venus is looking very good! Awesome job, very professional. Can i ask what a final price might be shipped to east coast US? If you'd even be shipping that far. thank you!

oh and egzoset brings up a pretty good point, maybe if possible eventually offer a whip attatchment for the stainless steel bowl instead of the standard screen cover

Thank you :) I think there is no problem shipping anywhere in the USA, I just checked the price lists and registered Priority maxi letter to any country outside Europe 13.55 eur...and a standard parcel by air to USA 11.70..I have to find out what is the difference between them, if one is quicker/safer. Parcels can be bigger but as this product package is just under 1000 grams, it would go as a maxi letter :)

I have some pressure to raise the price when I start real business, as there is Value Added tax to be paid then, but for orders outside EU this is not to be paid so the price can probably stay as it is for US orders.

Currently the parts and manufacturing costs are relatively high, as can be expected as materials used are not the cheapest, batteries are patented technology and I want to use components which are from respectable sources and rated for much harsher enviroment than they should ever face inside this product, to make it work flawlessy for years to come, especially high quality wall adapters seemed to be hard to find but finally I have a unit for which even the manufacturer gives a warranty of 2 years. And especially the custom machined stainless steel parts + wooden frame with lots of manufacturing and finishing add to costs, and the laser engraving services I'll do next. The images and videos are of prototype with low quality finish.

Yes, I've been thinking about this, and it is a good idea, as it would make it possible to use it without the glass dome! The vaporizer is not that big in nature and feels good in hand, but when the glass dome is placed on top, it is definitely not something that can be put inside a pocket, without the glass it would travel easily inside jacket pocket..and on the other hand, when maximum portability is not an issue, it can be used normally and get the advantages of glass dome and still have wireless freedom at home.

...just have to figure out how to do it...the temperature of vapor is higher then, I haven't checked how well those silicone tubings take this kind of heat, the specification says +220 degrees celsius but I don't know, the whip attachments seem to be made of glass, and once again I have no idea where to get this kind of things...it has been a big surprise for me how many things there are to be done before a product is ready and all associated things to be done :D

I think a trimmed down version might help finance development for the Venus, why not let it have a little brother (Mars!) which wouldn't be portable: e.g. no fancy/expensive batteries but the same airpath dynamics?... Made of plastic instead of wood if that helps... Options like a whip would be reserved to the Venus.
