SUPER high CBD ratio.

Awhile ago, I mentioned a special strain that my dispensary got in that had a really high CBD ratio formulated for being super active for pain management. They just published this analysis from the labs, for those that are interested:

Very interesting, thanks for posting Lwien. I would not have predicted such a low amount of THC(I dont know if other high CBD strains also have that trait or not, just saying). I wish I had access to the strains that you legal medical patients do;) :/

It's all in the ratio. Total active cannabinoids are quite high. To be able to get that much CBD in a strain is quite an accomplishment. If the THC levels were higher, I can't see how they would be able to maintain such a high CBD percentage.

Experienced growers weigh in please.

This same dispensary has strains with THC percentages up in the 22 to 23% range. From what I've heard, a lot of the patients are mixing the higher THC dominate strains with this batch of Harlequin which I've heard is super effective.

Still, this isn't a strain that I would purchase, but it is interesting, none the less. It's just a really unique cannabinoid ratio.

Y would you not purchase it?

Because I'm not looking for additional pain relief while giving up the euphoria that THC provides. But, if pain relief was my top priority, I would be buying this strain in a heartbeat.

I would purchase it just to do my own comparison atleast. Whether or not it was the best choice for me or my medical condition.

Question for dispensary "goers"(or lwien in particular), Does the bud tender or whoever sells you your medicine know what your condition is? do you talk to them about it and discuss which strains may be the best for you? Because, if you bought a strain that technically wasnt cultivated to help your problem...wouldnt that be somewhat comparable to buying the wrong medication, just because you want to try it out :ko:
Maybe i'm looking to far into it now.....it is just a plant. The healing properties might always be present whether or not the plant is high/low in this or that. :/

oh shit! ~20% cbd sounds great, as I've heard that high levels of cbd/cbns are great for anxiolysis. Last time I checked though, your dispensary was pretty strict on enrollment, and was closed to new members. Would love to get my hands on some of that harelquin J!

Depends on the dispensary. Some of them are geared towards the recreational user while others kind of straddle the middle ground. CornerStone is strictly geared towards the medical user. They always ask how a particular strain worked for you and then keep a database per strain so that they can recommend, as per ailment, what particular strain would work best for your particular situation.

Yeah, CornerStone stocks some really unique strains such as Harliquin that would typically never see the light of day at other dispensaries. And yeah, they've had a closed enrollment for over 2 years now but they do make exceptions for those who are seniors with serious ailments or disabilities and/or desire relief from post operation pain and for those that are terminally ill. They will also take in those that are personally recommended by their long standing patients.

Their staff is the most knowledgable and the most caring staff that I have ever come across.

Not the greatest scientific source I'm sure but I read in High Times last month in their medical Q&A section (run by a Dr of Psychology rather than Pharmacology/Physiology) that: "CBN doesn't create subjective effects on its own and seems to enhance THC's effects only slightly."

That's obviously CBN rather than CBD but does a similar principle apply? THC has to be present in order for the other compounds to take full-effect?
Considering the low THC content of this particular strain, lwien's notion of combining it with a high THC strain sounds like it'd work a treat!

This just in from CRC. Interesting.
---------------------------------------------------

Testing strains is really the only way of determining CBD content. Previously, we'd guessed that strains with creeper effects would be CBD-rich, but we were completely wrong. The most consistent high-CBD strain we've had at CRC has been Harlequin. It typically tests at around 8% CBD total(acidic and neutral forms). Harlequin appears to produce about half as much THC as CBD. We had one batch that tested much higher that we dubbed "H2", though we have not seen any subsequent testing to confirm that high result. We've received inconsistent test results on our Soma A+, which is now causing us to reconsider whether the phenotype we've got can legitimately be called high-CBD. If it sounds like I'm being at all vague, it's simply because I have ongoing concerns about the precision of any testing results from any lab in California. We need more communication and standardization between these labs, before our confidence in claimed testing results is firm.

To those patients seeking high-CBD strains... Be careful of outlandish claims for CBD. There remains a question about whether the amount if CBD found in any cannabis flowers is high enough to be significant medicinal effectiveness. It appears that effective dose of CBD required may be higher than smoked or vaporized cannabis can deliver.

I've let some homegrown go too long, I definitely missed the THC content, as that usually suffers when you're looking at higher levels of degredation products CBD I think.

Definitely "Hi-Fi" that chart, the tests, and the direction they've announced in it. Hope other dispensaries pick up on having something similar, it adds a lot of legitimacy to the operation, doesn't it?

I may not like that strain or the way it was grown, but it's numbers don't lie, it's definitely going to have a different effect than what I pick out.

lwien, can you comment on the use of this high CBD strain? It looks like I can get this from San Fransisco if I wanted to also. What kind of effects have you seen with it?

Wait are you talking about the CRC health group? To be honest I'm a little wary of hearing anything from a group dedicated to treating addiction.

I haven't. Never tried it before, but from what I've heard, users have reported good pain relief with very little euphoria.

No. It's the dispensary I go to. CornerStone Research Collective.

Yeah, I know, huh. High CBD strains are not for getting high but I have heard that mixing it in a salad with a strain that has a high THC ratio is pretty nice. A nice Indica like Skywalker would be nice to try with a strain like Harlequin.

since larry mentioned CRC's initial presumption about CBD rich strains, i'd like to add by saying that on the herbalaire, i can vape tons at the lower boiling points ~325*F, but if i start high like ~365*F on up, i immediately feel satiated, and i feel the need to stop.

the lower boiling feeling takes time to set in, but the higher temp hits immediately, which is why i've been associating it with CBD.

I probably have some high CBD stuff laying around
the strain is NDB, someone on another forum tested it and got a hashplantprofile(=high CBD), but also high thc for a hashplant
I had 2 pheno's, a purple and a green
the purple in this strain is possbly caused by interbreeding with killing fields(the line I have has interbreeded with killing fields once), so it's possible this purple pheno is more killing fields dominant
I like the purple pheno, altough it has a very mild effect, but it;s nice and relaxing and lacks the typical indica couchlock/sleepiness(wich is the reason I don't like indica's)
but the green pheno was already disappinting at the end of flower(wouldn't swell well, and mold problems, later then the purple outdoor, NDB is an outdoorstrain)
and the weed I have from it(that isn't lost by mold) also doesn't really get me high, only gives me a bit of a drugged sleepy indica feeling in larger quantities
but I discovered when I'm having a headache(from a regular cold/fever), just 1-2 puffs of this green pheno and the headache is practically gone, altough I still don't get high from it
mixing with other stuff was no succes, since then it has a more indica effect, wich I don't like at all(I get so sleepy I can't even feel the high with indica's, and usually I can only think of sleeping after having had indica)

this is unusual, because what i associate with what i presume is high CBD has a great effect when mixed with high THC containing strains.

maybe there is more variables yet to be considered.

well it may have a great effect to you, Ii have this effect from all indicadom. strains ;) (and even from some lesser sativa dom. strains, I also get it from jack herer if I vape a little too much of it)
and from hash, but I do love the taste of hash
and I think all the strains I mixed it with also already had some indica in it(hard to find pure sativa at the coffeeshops, the closest I have is some own harvest, but I don't think I've tried mixing that alone with the green NDB, only with also the purple NDB wth it, I am sparse with this sativa because I don't have that much of it so it's my 'special' stash, wich is also only vaped never smoked, and mostly by myself since it's the kind of effect that's best alone, and it lasts longer of I don't have to share it, so I rather share the purple NDB with friends)

Please see this issue of Treating Yourself on the strain "Cannatonic" by resin seeds.

http://www.treatingyourself.com/images/issues/pdfs/issue24.pdf

Article starts on page 82. Like lwein stated its the ratio that is key here. Looks like a 1:1 ratio, like in Sativex, is what they are shooting for. Hashish, the article points out, is a good source for CDB/THC levels. Interesting to note that CBD has been all but bred out of most cannabis strains due to the emphasis on THC for so long. I would LOVE to try some of this.

I have some of the cannatonic and have had harlequin. I don't remember the THC/CBD breakdown on the cannatonic I have, but I've had some success battling anxiety and migraines with it and the harlequin. With the migraines, I've had better luck mixing with one of the strong indicas I usually go to. I get relief while being less "high" than I would using just the indica. As far as anxiety, it felt like it shut down the part of my brain making me feel like that. One time I could feel myself working up to a panic attack, and it just stopped it. I was able to just relax.

My sister tried some of the harlequin when a tooth started bothering her a few weeks ago. Vicodin makes her puke, and it took a few days to get into the dentist. She really seemed to get some help from it.

I tried some harlequin about a month or so ago. Not sure what the percentages were, but it was definitely different. The difference didn't floor me or anything but it was noticeable. It was... okay. My pain seems to go away no matter what strain I smoke as long as I do it regularly. A couple days off and I start to notice it coming back little by little.

Anyway, the main difference I noticed was being functional. It reminded me of a typical sativa without the extreme paranoia sativas give me. One instance in particular I remember was going to the grocery store immediately after vaping harlequin. I felt good but I could walk straight, didn't feel paranoid, didn't feel like everyone knew I was high, etc. I felt at first like it was just weak weed but after some time figured out I'm just used to indica.

Overall I'll try it again for sure if I see it. I'd keep a regular stock if I could find a good source. But I probably wouldn't vape it unmixed unless I were going somewhere or for some reason needed to be clear-headed. For normal use I'd mix it with a different strain.

George, as for dispensaries and medical advice/discussion, the budtenders here always ask what I use it for. I just say pain and anxiety. That seems to be plenty info for them. One directed me to harlequin on that info. On my first dispensary visit I asked for sativas as where I used to live they were rare. (Actually pretty sure I never had one prior or maybe once in many years.) The budtender really encouraged me not to use those and get indicas instead. So they do make recommendations, some more specific than others. They've been pretty good about specifically recommending for or against strains as regards my anxiety.
