1918 isnt a millennia. Thats modern enough to be perfectly relevant, plus all the other epidemics that have happened round the globe since then. There are countries that have very low deaths and were ready. Its not human nature to accept this and chalk up a load of deaths to collateral. That might be the US admins outlook and possibly the UK too, but its not human nature.

I mean, that big rock that killed the dinosaurs was ages ago and we look for big rocks now, and we've even trained up Bruce Willies of all people.

BRUCE WILLIES!
The fact is, the USA's failure to prepare for this is 2 decades long. Conversely, pandemic preparedness campaigns have historically been bipartisan. The current administrations response to it has been a joke but that's because Trump and his people are fools, it's not because they're Republican like you desperately want to believe.

The idea of wearing a mask in public aims at protecting *others* from getting infected *by you*. Also many of these masks are good at filtering the air you breath in, but they won't filter your exhale, they are not able to protect others in case you are infected, thus creating a feeling of false safety for those around you. When I'm outside, I actually try to avoid getting too close to those wearing „professional“ masks.

I agree about the potential for someone wearing a mask to wrongly think they are 100% protecting themselves/others. But anyone who thinks that hasn't paid attention or is woefully behind in terms learning to protect themselves and others. Darwin awards recipients......

The masks can't protect "others" if they are too close and you're infected.... but the masks, when used properly, add a layer of protection in terms of distance the aerosol can travel. It's an enhancement to the 6 foot distancing requirement that folks should avail themselves of. So if you're adhering to the 6 foot distance requirement why not increase it's effectiveness?

EDIT: I should have been clearer that I'm not alluding to the N95 masks that we would like all first line resources to have available. I'm talking about all the others homemade or otherwise. Thanks @uncanni ... your subsequent post shined the light on what my original post should have included.

@mccringleberry I am heartened by your observation that we are living a real time train wreck, we can agree on that!

No one here is talking about Obama or preparation. Of concern is the response we're seeing in real time. Again, I think we here are focused more on the public health response.

And vaping, of course. ;)

Mask-wearing clearly involves both ingress from the outside and egress from the wearer. From what I have read in what I consider legitimate sources of information (The Atlantic, FDA), N95 masks are good for protecting the wearer.

The results of mask wearing by the general population in places like Hong Kong, Korea, etc., prove their effectiveness: their covid19 rates are very low.

Is there potential viable covid-19 cells being shed through the sweat of an infected person and if so, to what extent?

I havent once mentioned repubs or democrats. You are way off base.

Yes, but they are not adequate in a public environment, air pollution etc. will render many of those masks useless quickly. N95 for example won't provide any protection when the wearer has any facial hair. It's also necessary to learn how to put these masks on properly and also how long they last in which environments. Again: the idea is not to protect yourself from the virus, that is just not possible in public with a mask.

The results of mask wearing by the general population in places like Hong Kong, Korea, etc., prove their effectiveness: their covid19 rates are very low.

They (and we here in Germany, were numbers look quite good as well) do not wear medicinal staff masks but rather „community masks“ in public. Our health care warns to wear medicinal masks in public as they create a false feeling of safety. In general we should understand that the risk of getting infected does not decrease by wearing a mask, but only the risk to infect others.

I just got up to see the UK are lifting lockdown as of Wednesday with a very confusing 'you can spend more time outside but lockdown remains in place'.

Makes no fucking sense, and we have amongst the highest rates of death in Europe.

Thank god I never go out anyway.

EDIT: I like this story -
The sex toy manufacturer making NHS gear

EDIT2: And this story I find quite fascinating, I dont know why. I'm still waking up, leave me alone! :)

EDIT3: The UK is going to be mostly infected before we know it. What the fuck. People. PEOPLE! OUr govt. are making this so much fucking worse. Come Wednesday, where I live, I can guarantee the streets will be full.

So you're saying that doctors wear masks to protect their patients? I don't think so. As a matter of fact, it's absurd.

Clearly you and I have differing sources of information on the protection that a masks provides to the wearer. I maintain that masks protect wearers as well, and N95 masks provide superior protection to the wearer.

EDIT: Its my understanding that a masks efficiency goes down if not used correctly. Its not an all or nothing. Facial hair reduces effectiveness, it doesnt make the mask completely irrelevant. Plus, thats then on the beard wearer. I wear shoes on my feet, doesnt mean I go walking through dogshit :) People can be taught to use things correctly, in general, altho there are always going to be some people who want make a point publicly. I'm going to go with the really experienced science guy saying WEAR MASKS I think, it makes logical sense, plus you know, South Korea's results.

EDIT2: And I'll shave more regularly :D

We don't need no stinking face masks! We are the Federales.

"Four CEOs of food companies and the president of the American Farm Bureau Federation were told to remove their face masks before a meeting in Iowa Friday with Vice President Mike Pence, a startling video posted by The Intercept reveals.
Pence — also without a mask — appeared a short time later at the headquarters of the Hy-Vee grocery chain in West Des Moines for a roundtable discussion with the men in front of an audience."

While I understand the dangers of a "break in the food chain" and that people need food (though not nearly so much meat) I have only seen one plausible explanation for compelling (by presidential invocation) the meat plants to stay open, when 99% of other industry in US is not so-ordered. Not even PPE companies.
The order serves to give cover to the meat companies; they are officially excused from any liabilities related to the pandemic. It doesn't really matter if their employees get sick or die, they'll just get new ones.

I was talking about us wearing masks *in public*, the situation in a hospital or medical practice is different from being outdoors.

If you follow that rule, you do in fact endanger people around you and give yourself and those around you a feeling a false safety. Those masks are designed for educated (!) medical staff to be used in indoor environments for a limited period of time.

I don’t know but I read it covid can be transmitted through sperm. Everyday this virus seems to evolve and affect people in different ways.

Did someone find a reference that confirms the virus can be transmitted via sperm? Asking for a friend :brow:

I believe they found the VIRUS IN SPERM but have not been able to prove TRANSMISSION THROUGH SPERM. Lets be careful with this one....increases in the amount of sex is one of the few benefits of the quarantine and can be one of the better ways to cure quarantine boredom.

What is your point? That nobody should wear them since some can't use them properly? I mean, what's your point?????

My point was 'wear masks but use them correctly'. Im saying that claims that masks are totally ineffective with beards are kinda bunk, as the mask goes down in effectiveness rather than just switches off having any use.

Im saying nothing works if you dont use it in the correct way. Im saying that people can and do, largely, show the abillity to follow simple instructions, so claiming that mass mask use would be useless doesnt really make logical sense.

Computers dont work if you dont use them correctly but we all seem to be doing fine here having a chat, so I'm going to assume people can learn how to use masks.

But instead of any of that, our countries have spent months saying 'well, we have no proof masks actually work' which is just utter horseshit.

Has that cleared it up for you? Did you manage to read the whole post this time? ;)

You know those hand washing campaigns that were doing the rounds? Same with but with how to use masks correctly, and there you go, a whole nation educated.

Mask use isnt a degree level of learning. South Korea got their heads round it very quickly.

Plain and simple; people got lied to about masks in the USA so the administration could horde the stockpile before people realized how foolish it was to believe such nonsense. I'm sure supply elsewhere was the same reason politicians lied to their public. Nothing new.

Now N95 rating compliance even with an N95 mask is nearly impossible. But a cough or a spit deliverer or recipient has a much higher change of not catching or spreading any contagion, including c'19. It is still all about level of risk. This pandemic is free in the world and will infect people from here on out until a vaccine and eradication measures are in place. Right now, we're just changing the band-aids daily. People will need to come to grips with it. How will you restructure your life in the wake of this. Are you prepared for the economic onslaught that is about to be unleashed? When we come back 'outside' - what will you do?

You don't even know in what circumstances I would be wearing the N95 mask. You jump to all sorts of conclusions without knowing anything about my context. I have a terminal degree, I am educated, and one of my best friends is a pulmonologist in Austin, Texas, who I consulted on these issues.

You can go ahead and puff and blow, but I'm not changing my decision based on the consultations and research I've done.

I don't understand why you're aiming this at me. I watched your video, I thanked you for posting it ahd have forwarded it to various friends.

It seems like we are saying similar things; if I mis-read something, point it out to me but don't get angry at me.
