About the referer header. One of the primary uses of the referer header is to show a site whether the browser requesting a page (or an image) is already authenticated by that site. If your site is password protected, for example, you don't want someone without permission to be able to access a page. If the referer header on a request is showing the user is coming from outside your domain, the request will be refused. If the request is coming from inside the domain, that means that that browser session is already authenticated, and the request can be safely honored.

This is why one (I) may not be willing to break their browser by blocking the referer header so that I may see images posted on IMGUR. I need to be able to go to sites that require authentication.

So, I don't know about IMGUR as I have never used it, but Photobucket's announcement was that they were discontinuing support for third party hosting....ALL third party hosting....NOT just FC and NOT based on examination of the header.

They just won't do it at all anymore. And, I believe, that they are not the only one taking this broad of an action and quite frankly, I don't blame them.

If your site actually downloads and maintains the file, then Photobucket works fine.

Well, we are talking about imgur. They have not walked away or become a pay only service. They just won't host our images without making us jump through hoops. I don't jump well.

I used to use TinyPic, which was a division of PhotoBucket. When photobucket was bought out TinyPic was cut loose and they died a quiet death. I have copies of anything I have hosted anywhere (that I care about) so I don't lose any of my images when a hoster changes their rules or shuts down, but the link to the image on FC or elsewhere dies and there is no way for a user to go back and change where the link on the page is hosted so the image dies as well.

Because I post images just for fun and/or to help others as a hobby I am unlikely to pay for a service to host my images. If FC decided to host their own as "the other place" does this issue would be moot, but until or unless FC decides to change what they do my posted images are only as secure as the vendors who host them for me for free. I certainly understand why FC doesn't want to do the hosting and I am fine with that.
