Fluxer Heaters, induction heaters for Dynavap

I have several protected cells that are 10 amp rated. I run these EVVA protected cells but 9A could trip them. Of course protected cells are longer and could stress the battery holder in a Fluxer. Has anyone tried fitting protected cells in the battery holder?

9 amps you say? How long does it take a Fluxer to get to 2 clicks on average (anyone?). I'm at about 8 seconds on the stock China DIY IH at 60W for both clicks.

In a high power circuit where current drain can significantly affects the actual output voltage I would want to know the voltage of the battery pack under load. If it drops to 9V under load, and the cells are reasonably matched (as they should be), I can assume each cell is operating at 3V+/-0.2V. This keeps them in safe territory. At 2.5V or less, Li-ion cells start growing conductive hairs internally. This is what makes Li-Ion dangerous by creating the potential for internal shorting. That is why the warning on over-discharge and protection circuits. Flashlights would become pipe bombs if they didn't. The danger is not omnipresent. Knowing the failure mechanism could safe a life or property someday. Cheap cells only exacerbate the problem.

Keep your Fluxer cells charged! ;) It won't change performance but your cells will thank you.

Thanks for weighing in on batteries everyone. That is good info and while learning it all ourselves is ideal, its helpful to have it summarized. I find the info on batteries can be overwhelming, but really want to ensure safety as much as possible.

I've opted for 2 sets of the Samsung 30Q's instead of the Sony VC7's I posted earlier.

Can't wait to flex my flux!!!

Someone pointed out in a different thread that the VC7 is limited to 8 amps continuous unlike the VTC6 which is 20 amps continuous. Sony doesn't do well with making sure specs are in your face. VTC6 is rated somewhere between 15 and 20 amps continuous depending on source and the Sony spec sheet is not on the first page of a google search.

You can probably add LG to the trusted list.

Hey all,

I saw the following over the weekend and wanted to make a quick post to get the word out that this is NOT my device:

https://www.skullkandyvapor.com/dynavap

Again, NOT a Fluxer Heaters LLC induction heating device.

I'm writing my attorney an email about this now as I have some legal entities in the Fluxer Heaters name and will defend my copyright to that name as necessary, but I also want to get the word out to the folks that follow my stuff, as the name of the above device is similar enough to confuse my customers. My specific issue is with the name they have chosen for their device, not the fact that they make an induction heating device. If you see the above device come up in other social media spaces, please let people know that it isn't mine.

Thanks!

Happy Monday. :disgust:

I don't think it will be confused with yours as it is UGLY and EXPENSIVE for a plug in with unknown innards.
They could also have a problem using the name skullcandy?
The thing is if he gets a trademark for fluxer heaters and he doesn't aggressively enforce it he'll lose the trademark.

AcidFlashbang,
a brief report on the raised induction coil. i gave a quick review after using it once. this is the ten day report, ~ten sessions.

one of the nice things about the induction heater is there's a lot less variability between sessions. ambient temperature and battery charge level are the big ones. the results were consistent before i raised it and they are consistently better after i raised it.

for the measurable factors
. the first heat up takes 2-3 seconds longer. old 13 or 14 -> 16 or 17 new.

. all of the leaf is cooked to the same level in the new. in the old the bottom--furthest from the clicker--was less cooked than the leaf at the top.

for the subjective or hard to measure factors
. the first heat up is stronger

. compared to the old level, the second heat up kicks ass. i'm a light weight so i often feel the effects of one heat cycle quite strongly. i skip the third heat up about half the time whereas before i would do three and sometimes four heat ups.

. the clouds seem more visible but i don't usually pay attention to this so it could easily be my imagination.

Thanks so much for the feedback, @Monsoon , @felon167inc , @Gray Area , and @oddjobold - I definitely appreciate it!! Message received - I'll move forward with the smaller one with all due speed, and put aside the mug for now*.

I'll be using the Alpinetech 1590B. It's the size of a Hammond 1590B, but CNC'd and designed with square sides to avoid the "Hammond lean" issues. They feel very nice in the hand.

This is an ebay listing for the enclosures:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Alpinetech-1590B-CNC-Milled-Aluminum-Enclosure-Box-Hidden-Magnet-Anodized/222881126100?hash=item33e4c016d4:m:mlpG-SbxW7_6VtUlNVNkhqg&var=521710739780

Believe me, I wish it were ready to go now, but the board is still a work in progress. No one wants a disposable IH, which is what this is at the moment, lol. So please continue to be patient. I want one, too, and I have every intention of making these happen :D

As for how soon - I don't know, and I don't want to make any time-line promises. I'll keep you folks in the loop, though. I'll post something here as soon as I have news to share.

Thanks for helping me focus my energies! I also greatly appreciate your enthusiasm for my designs, even if it they haven't been exactly what you wanted yet. I'll try to deliver on the smaller unit as soon as possible.

*Mug update: Did not have much time to work on it this weekend, so it still isn't done. :\ Will finish it this week. BTW, I did the mug because several people had asked about a mug design (before Dynavap did their most-recent teaser of theirs), so I tried making one. My conclusion is that they are doable, but I doubt my design is any better than DVs, so I'm just as happy to give them this one. The "office tower" build is fairly involved - the construction crosses over into model-making territory.
Very impressive!

OK, here's a pic, minus heat shielding and two sub-PCBs. The finished version will have a hole in the cover, and the cover will attach magnetically. Remember: This one isn't ready to go yet, so be patient. Not sure of the cost yet, but less than the mug based one, as it's a much, much simpler build.

Power will be 2x 18650s, running at ~12VDC.

I too (as one of many) would like to see a pocket size Altoid size Fluxer in production.

Sign me up, please. I am in, mr_c !

HI all,

A late-January Fluxer Update:

My apologies! My regular job kept me very busy in January, and took much of my available time, as jobs will sometimes do.
It seems like I blinked and January flew by, and I have very little to show for it here. :\

Also, I apologize to those who have written requesting info, as I am also behind on non-customer service emails for similar reasons. I hope to get caught up soon.

In a related note, I have not sent out my next batch of order confirmation emails yet. I hope to do that soon as well.

Sense a theme?

On the business-side of things, there are some business and legal items I need to put in place before I ship out more heaters, and unfortunately a) these are taking some time, and b) once I do complete these they will add to my costs. I want to get this right and am still waiting on a few final numbers, so like everything else, this is taking longer than anticipated. :bang: Thanks for your patience.

Super-fun update, huh?

On the positive side, I have not been completely idle and have been using my down time to pre-build a large number of battery packs and cases. I took the pictures below today, and forgot to include the 50 or so circuit boards I have also prepared. I have a lot of sub-assemblies on hand, ready to assemble into heaters once I clear the aforementioned business hurdles. :haw:

Battery packs and cases at the ready:

IMG-9114-private.jpg

IMG-9116-private.jpg

And yes, I clean them again before I use them.

Not shown: another 120+ pre-machined cases still to be glued, lol.

I'll keep this one short, so that's all for now. Thanks for your patience and support! I hope to have another, more productive update soon.

Cheers,
:leaf:

Sorry to hear there’s ripoffs in the woodwork...but I am here to praise *your* berry....

back from the wilderness. My report on my Fluxer is: perfect.

My 15mm coil (?) gets my 5-fin Ti Omni to first click @4.91 sec and second click arrives @ 5:13 sec. cooldown click @ 17.45 sec - I often don’t get a second draw, but I get many hits.

M with the same cap and ‘same’ bowl contents heats in 4.89 sec (one click only) and takes 44.55 sec for cooldown click. Two-three+ serious lung-filling hits.

That’s with freshly topped batteries charged in-case, and full-not-packed bowls.
Times accurate to 100ths, margin of error 0.5 sec.

Other notes:
- love the green color!
- no worries about the magnetic cover coming off on its own. It is held on tight.
- trouble-free
- dealing with the battery is cumbersome and involves steps. Some might call this a drawback but what it tells ME is that there’s very little that something can screw it up by accident. Everything you might ever need to do with it isn’t *hard* at all, you just have to mean to do it, and that increases safety all around.

I’ll be back

I'm curious what you mean by "dealing" with the battery?

Do you mean making sure they're properly charged? Removing and re-inserting?

So I really wanted to avoid coming on here to talk about the issue that I had with my Fluxer but @mr_cfromcali forced me to with his great customer service!

I purchased two fluxers (16mm and 15mm) and the 15mm was running far too aggressively for me as I was able to clear a bowl with 2 cycles. To be fair, some people prefer this...I don't. Prior to the holidays, I exchanged emails with MrC and was offered a chance to send it in for a swap out to 16mm. I declined to send in as I was busy with holidays and didn't want to deal with going to the post office.

Shortly afterwards, I stumbled upon the video demonstrating the coil height adjustment and I gave it a whirl myself recently only to find that it was heating even more aggressively (1 cycle). I emailed MrC for troubleshooting and he emailed me back within the hour! He immediately realized the error of my adjustment as I had raised the coil vs. lowering it.

After removing a spacer and lowering the coils, the 15mm runs beautifully. I am able to get 5-6 cycles out of it with no fear of combustion. The coil adjustment is legit. It's a lot easier that I imagined and does make a dramatic difference in heating profile. For anyone that is seeking to adjust their Fluxer and make it more aggressive or less, you should really consider playing around with the coil height.

Not specifically: the cover takes effort to remove (the magnets are strong); the on-off switch takes effort to push (stiffer than many toggle switches); taking the batteries out requires effort (they’re a snug fit). This adds up to a device that is arguably flub-proof - no accident dislodging of the lid, no accidental dislodging of the batteries, no accidental switch-flipping. None of those things are HARD to do, like I said, but the effect is to make it a safer, simpler, more dependable device than one where controls and such can be easily changed without the user meaning to do so.

hope that clears it up some

A brief Fluxer Update:

Hi all,

I want to let you know that I have made progress completing my long-standing "open items" on my Fluxer to-do list, and am down to what I think is my final task. This piece isn't customer-facing but is nonetheless important. I am working on this last item presently, and am hopeful I will be able to resolve it within 1-2 weeks. Sorry to be vague, but I'll post more info soon, when I can share it. :)

For now, the thing I want to convey is that I see light at the end of my present tunnel, and I'm very hopeful I can get back to making heaters again real soon. The sooner, the better, too - I have waaaaay too many heater parts on hand to stop now!

More news as I learn it.

Cheers,
:leaf:
