For the people that use the nugsmasher mini: what is the maximum you have used in the bags? Haven't gone past 4g in the 3.5g bag.

Grabbed two of these as they were so cheap (just like me), thank you sir! I also got one of the Style C “Prison Shank” because you know, my village streets are pretty mean and tough. :D Went for the free 30 day slow boat shipping because I have more time than money...

Ordered this dab tool back in the first week of December. Still a no-show.

Looking at the tracking, it went from Donguan City to Guangzou. But then, suprisingly, it was sent back to Donguan where it has been "awaiting" air transport since Dec. 12th. And I'm like, what the fuck, couldn't it have been sent to Nanshan or Huizhou instead of back to Donguan from Guangzou. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

Next thing you know, they're going to tell me that it's been sent on to someplace like Cangwu or Zhongshan or some godforsaken place like that. A lot of travel for a $2 item that will never make it here. As God is my witness, this is the last time I will order anything from the Zengcheng District.

Quality thread, thanks folks.

I'm assuming this is very old news but just in case, and for those with collection issues, an aluminium clip board folder type thing placed in the freezer for a bit, and bought from a stationary shop, has helped me out a number of times. The clip is very handy for holding the paper.

@FlyingLow Thanks for your post in this thread about your press timings, thats a very good description of your routine and it has been useful for me. I normally do higher temp presses, my thinking being to get things flowing as quickly as possible and get the puck and rosin off the heat asap, but I've been wanting to try lower temps so your description is very useful in how complete it is. Gonna try it today. Thanks.

There are numerous factors, which is why there really is no substitute for experience.
If unsure, press more and more until you find what exactly works.

With Berry White, it came out like a white fucking gold! One of my finer presses with regards to quality and flavor. Over the next day, it cured into a wonderful consistency I would describe as a spreadable butter. Holds whatever shape you mold it in, easy to handle, it is just like I like it.

In spite of the awesome product, there is much fine tuning to do to improve my run. First thing I noticed when I released pressure, is that my material did not run. It was pressed from the puck and solidified/crystalized right there while on the hot plates. Sounds cool to the inexperienced and it is easy to collect, but this is BAD as it blocks flow and severely impacted me with an embarrassingly low yield.

Next time I will likely run at 185* and probably speed up my tightening process to try to get the flow running away from the puck faster.

I am using a 10t3x5, but there was no drip on this run... Just white gold.

Since I only supply for myself, and myself only uses about a half gram of rosin every 2-3 weeks, it's a while between presses. I also like to vape a little herb besides rosin.

I pressed about 3 grams of Grape OX flower @170F yesterday. After some recent discussion, I decided not to use the 160um bag this time. The first press produced so little rosin there was barely anything to collect. I then folded the puck over a couple times and repressed at 220F. The second press produced a good .4g of rosin. Then a third press at the same temp gave me another .04g for a total of about 14% return. Kind of low for the herb I've had access to. I'm not killing it, but I have generally been in the 18-20% yield area.

So what caused the low yield? I guess it could have been the quality of the herb, although that OX looked pretty frosty. It also could have been the low temp at first press, or the fact that I didn't contain the puck with a 160um bag. True, it will only come with experience, but at the rate I press it's going to take a long time to fine tune it.

I put some of that OX in my dynavap in a little cotton, and damn, the first hits do taste like grape candy. So I'm happy after all. :)

I would guess the puck is spreading out too much.

Yes, I have a pre-press mold to form pucks. While I've noticed a difference in color for rosin pressed at lower temps, I have yet to notice a change in flavor or effect between presses at various temps. I might go back to just pressing at 220F to maximize my yield from the first press. I keep waiting for something magical to happen at the lower press temps.

My low temp pressed rosin is quite different to the higher, much lighter in color, more crumble like consistency and does taste different and is smoother to hit on the enail.:2c:
I do not know why yours all seems the same.:shrug:

I've recently had enough flower to press 10g at a time, starting at around 170f and going up in 5 to ten degree increments. By the time I hit around 190, the rosin got darker. Not by much but its noticeable. Up till that point, the rosin has been, like you state, more crumble-like with improved flavour and being a bit smoother on the nail, straight off the press.

The stuff I pressed at slightly higher temps needs a day to cure to become a smoother hit.

My bag packing and pressing method werent up to snuff, neither was the material I was using (badly trimmed, quite leafy but very potent), so yield results are inconclusive, but the quality was very nice.

Besides finding the phase changes interesting, I was mostly curious about post-processing for functional reasons.

Most of the herb I've pressed becomes a sap which is messy to load on atty's and such, or a shatter that explodes when you break it. I found buddered up rosin much easier to work with. One of my last presses was a lower temp with a lower yield, but it produced a buddered up product right on the parchment so there was no need to process in my mind. While forming sauce and crystals looks cool, I have not had pleasant experiences in vaping larger crystals as the THC punch is excessive. I'm fine with more of a blend of CBD and THC.

What is your process after collection? Try whipping the rosin up after you collect it and then use the parchment to sort of fold it on top of itself, similar to how taffy is made, for a few minutes. Let it sit on the parchment in open air for 12 hours. It typically will butter up and soften in color

I think all this is strain dependent and on what the consumer wants.
Same as the differences or similarities of presses at different temperatures.
Some strains change more with higher temp presses compared to lower temp presses, some less.
Same for the cure, some strains gain tremendously with a cure, some just get blander.

I pressed some SSH that at the pressing at 90°C/194°F left the room with no smell to my nose.
Also the collected rosin does not smell. At lower temps anyway.
The next day and after, the smell developed. (Or my nose was so saturated by the smell in the beginning that it only could detect correctly after a couple hours/days again...???)

The effects are a bit weirdly headachy fresh which is completely lost after a couple days.


I remember other presses too, where the fresh rosin made me cough alot and I liked it much better after a couple of days.
Some of the traditional preparations of hash or resin for smoking involve breaking of the trichome heads and exposure to air (and/or heat etc.). I guess those strains just gain with that cure or they would not do it.

But some other stuff is just fantastic fresh from the press.

I've been slowly going up in temp with 10 or 20g loads, the same variety, from 170, and now up to 200. From about 185, theres been no increase in yield, but quite a change in how the rosin looks straight off the press. The resultant rosin after a few days tho, has ended up with pretty much exactly the same consistency overall.

All pressed at 160u. I have some 15u bags arriving this week, which should be interesting to work with :)

I've been vaping on the same rosin, made in different ways, from exactly the same batch of flower, since before this recent xmas. I think I'm finding the 'cleaner' rosin much better at vaping at lower temps, and therefore, less lung irritation. So, wish after the squish number one is clean the rosin if its been pressed in high micron bags.

Wish after the squish number two is knowing dish temps! Not controller temps, not temps you like, not temps ya in the habit of using, but dish temp. I've been temp stepping thru, and what I thought was a low enough dish temp has turned out to be causing a carbon taste not noticeable unless the terps are vaped off at lower temps. I was inspired by another member to get by digital thermometer and probes out and get a bit more accurate about what the hell I'm doing and I've been rewarded with way more accurate temps and a better experience overall. And way less lung irritation.

What dish temps let off nasties? How accurate are charts like these? -

Any thoughts any one? If, after the squish, you dont know your actual dish temps (we all know how wrong controllers can be), how many of us are actually fucking combustion and how many are having the carbon flavour hidden by that explosion of terpenes.

Even with previously knowing all this, and having paid attention to charts like that for the last decade or so, I was still straying into dish temps that I now know werent vaping any more. All this has been evidenced by carbon flavour (even on large dabs, let alone ones where the dish has started to dry), the colour of the dish clean up, and the night/day difference between my lungs pre paying attention to dish temps, and now.

I've seen many sources that cite the boiling point of THC around 400F/~200C

Theoretically if those charts were accurate, you should be able to medicate with a dish temp under 350F, but I'm kinda skeptical of that. One problem with these charts is they don't factor in decarboxylation info, the edible community cites over 15 minutes at 300F for full decarb. How much THC will even decarb during a dab with a 315F dish temp? I have never been able to find any info for these questions.

While on the topic of dish temp I can say that a number of terpenes begin combusting around 500F.

Yeah, def not accurate, more like ball park figures. Plus size of dab, even a tiny one is gonna change how the temps situation works.

Im just surprised that I'm getting similar results, findings, blah blah blah, along with back where I started - using the number dial on a non digital volcano and checking what temps each setting was roughly supposed to be and how that knowledge changed my usage when filling the bowl completely, how that effected my lungs, breathing, phlegm production, recovery time, and of course, coughing.

Obviously, in the dabbing world, theres the added complication of the carb cap and the pressure drop, the inhale swap of air blah blah blah too :D Everything changes up again, and dish temp readings taken in the open air go back to being potentially useless info :)

However! :) This is all still pretty roughly lining up. I can do small enough dabs at 350f dish temp of mechanically separated thca, and have the whole dab evaporate. Even with terps, and a 'normal' rosin dab, the whole dab will be finished at 415f dish temp. If theres the gloop from terps left over in the dish, going higher in temp just brings out a vile taste, then that carbon taste starts at ~460+. So now, with thca at hand, finally being able to mix my own ratio, I can add more hit, not increase the dab size too much, and have even lower temps. Now you saying that 500f terpene burning temp, and how were playing with inaccuracies and increased temps when capped, it lines up with 460f dish temp maybe being the start of 'too hot'.

Obviously, I realise this is all riddled with subjectivity and variables of room temp, air temp, glass type, inhale speed etc etc. but this is all lining up with (of all things) my no cough massive bowl temp stepping on the volcano, and then on every iteration of the flower pot. Now here with dabs on the tbucket, aided in my settings by you mentioning the speed of coil/dish reaction time.

I think part of what Im finding is that the cleaner the rosin, the more obvious it is that this is happening, and the easier it is to temp step thru it all thanks to the coil/dish reaction time.

My lungs havent felt this good in years.

As for that sticky q tip thing, yeah, its taken me a while to get my head round what is waste and what is 'finished'. Temp stepping has only cemented what I already thought. If you add pure cbd, or pure thc or whatever to the dish, it will evaporate, but as soon as you add sauce/terps/the other constituent parts of rosin, you're going to get shit left over in the dish. Its going to dry out. Its going to cook.

Regardless tho, all I really care about is my 'consume large quantities but still be able to breathe' worship :)

This video does a nice job at showing the visual changes that rosin goes through during post-processing. This rosin was presssed from kief and then heated at 225F and then allowed to sit at around 100F. The result is a great looking sugary sauce.
