Simple Cure for Coughing and Wheezing: Lower Temps and Smaller Hits?

Lower temps? Smaller hits? What's other folks experience if they've got breathing issue?

I'd developed some chronic wheezing and coughing related to my vaping. Gave vaping up for a month and just used edibles: By the end, all my symptoms had completely vanished. But I much prefer vaping, as it does the job quicker and better controlled. And more fun! Now I've started vaping again, and even doing it carefully, my symptoms have started to return.

I don't blame the vapes--Fury2, Crafty, and several Vapcaps--but my own need to get as wrecked as possible, and so too much vaping, often at higher temps. These breathing issues developed and got a bit worse over time even though I often use great bubblers/watertools. Or perhaps its my long history as a smoker--more than 50! years for cigs(quit 6 years ago) and nearly 50! for weed(started vaping exclusively 4 years ago.) A

So I looked at my Crafty manual, which I've been using at 375F with a finishing boost to 405. I'd been using similar temps with my F2 and liked the hotter zone for my VCs. What can I say: I like big cloudy hits! Crafty manual suggests 356 with a boost to 383. Looking further, I found these statements in the manual, which could be helpful to others using any type of vape with any technique who have any sort of throat or breathing problems. Excuse S-B's non-English English.

"A high intensity of vapor can lead to irritation of the respiratory passages...." "In this case the temperature should be lowered...."

"Inhale only half the amount of air you can normally manage."

Increase the temperature "only as a last resort".

Drove down to legal retail Mass yesterday and got some great stuff: Dakini Kush and Sour Diesel. I want to enjoy it without coughing and wheezing. So I'm going to take this advice. Also interested in other folks agree or if they've had success finding these or other ways of continuing to vape while dealing with their lung issues

@Polarbearboy I am in New England too!
If you vape street bud that might be (part of) the problem. I was getting some pretty crunchy coughs and I had respiratory issues cropping up. Once I went medical and got dispensary bud all my symptoms went away. I don't know if that's possible for you but it helped me. I also will switch to wax or another clean extract if I get a cold or any regular cough developing. I do that for a few days and I am usually good. I have to be extra vigilant when using extracts because they tend to intoxicate me more than herb. So smaller doses and pacing myself is key.

On the other hand get some Propolis and see if that helps. My wife has asthma and has dealt with chronic bronchitis almost her entire life. She uses Propolis spray all the time as a but supplement. Then if the starts to get raspy sounding coughs or she starts to get sick she will take a wild oregano pill with every meal and within a day or two it's gone.

I think your on the right track with low temps, smaller hits and using water.

You could also combine medibles with less vaping. Maybe a microdose with a brownie.

It might help to know your terpenes. Certain terpenes bother some people, so if you find something that bothers you less, research the terpenes for future reference.

Organic herbs > chem grown, and pesticide sprayed herb can bother sensitive vapors.

I have pretty much the same problem, and I find concentrates serve me better than herb when I'm having problems. Less hits required and no particulates in the vapor.

I still vape herb but also take medibles and use the tips listed.

And lastly your doctor can prescribe inhalers that could help.

How much do you typically vape? In a session and per day?

Concentrates equals less vapour but the same effect as X amount of bowls of flower vapour (depending on dab size), so if using low temps around 400f and a sapphire (or similar dish) means a minimal hit of vapour, and its a vapour that is much kinder on the lungs so needs less time to recover from, and less vapour (or loads, again depending on dab size/dabbing frequency).

Recovery time for the lungs is the key thing I think, and the above approach is by far the kindest approach I've found while not sacrificing any kind of consumption level, but also giving the least amount of accumulated recovery time needed. I'm producing way less phlegm and having way less breathing problems, mornings have become more tolerable with less inhaler use. Now my lungs have less to recover from, I'm hoping I might see further improvements but a lot of that is down to other life style/health issues I have (different story entirely).

Accumulated flower vaping kills my lungs to the point of just having given it up completely, but I'm still vaping all day, every day :D

My lungs are telling me I am choosing... wisely :)

First: Thanks for your thoughts. I originally thought that I was getting the coughing and wheezing from crumby weed, even though I got it from a licensed Maine medical provider. So I went down to Mass and got some great stuff, but the problem persisted. Its my lungs not necessarily the weed that's the problem.

Interesting that two folks suggest concentrates. Other than hash and kief, I've never tried vaping concentrates. I'm basically a flower guy. I've never done a dab or even seen one being used. Maybe I should give it a try.

Also going to try the Squiby hemp fiber filter for use with my VapCaps, which I've had to give up for the past few weeks.

Having grown up with asthma, I'm all too familiar with inhalers. They are something I know I want to avoid as they are somewhat addictive, can have ill effects, and keep one from dealing with the self-induced underlying lung issues.

Its now a week of lower temps. Lower regular temp to 356F from 375 and boost temp from 405 to 385 helped. But then I tried reducing it to 350 and 375, which seemed to be a major improvement. Funny that that 6 degrees more of reduction seemed to have such a powerful improvement.

I usually always have a beer and a vape now a days in the evening. Haha. Doesn’t effect me bad at all
Beer and hops are each other's closest plant relative, as confirmed by the similarity of their DNA, both being in the Cannabaceae family. I agree: They go very well together. Better than love and marriage? I don't know, but its damn close. Terpenes r' Us!

I don't attribute any of my lung symptoms to the hoppy IPAs and Belgian tripels that are beloved in my household.

My personal recipe for avoiding irritation is to get as dense vapor as possible. It may sound counterproductive but I tend to use fast extractors and high temps. I can kill a Vapcap in 3 draws and it will be much better for my lungs than spacing that same load into 6-8 draws. Vapor cooling is also a great factor. I like tu use long stems or empty bongs for cooling purposes as hot vapor is harsher.
And the golden rule: Never fill more than 60-70% of your lungs with vapor, leave some spare space for fresh air!!

For me, water filtration is the biggest thing that makes vaping cough go away for me, I would only cough if I took really massive hit through water, like many times bigger than what would make me cough dry.

Now I've added microdosing to the list of things I can do to allow me to continue vaping in spite of over sensitive lungs. Hoping to add to this discussion of lung issues for vapers, here's my write-up from the microdosing thread:

"After more than 50 years of smoking cigarettes(Now six years without a single puff) and nearly as long smoking dope(vaping almost exclusively 4 years now), I seem to have sensitive lungs. After using any of my vapes, most often through a bubbler--or two!, I suffer from shortness of breath and wheezing, which can keep me awake at night. (Thread in Ask FC) So I tried a month of edibles only, and found that inconvenient and extremely erratic, either barely getting ripped or ending up crawling on the floor and puking which hasn't happened to me in more than 30 years. Now back to vaping but trying to be more conscious, lower temperatures, shorter tokes and almost always with water unless I'm out hiking or snowshoeing or some such. Other than with VapCaps, I always use dosing caps in my Crafty and Fury2 and usually do a whole cap during the day and a cap or two in an evening, getting two or three mini-sessions per cap. Then one night last week as I pondered my future with my favorite herb, I realized for the first time that I could put half as much or less in a cap and still get a fine strong buzz.

So over the long weekend, when I knew I'd be getting together with friends and watching the football games and also having an evening alone, I tried a little experiment, using my scale. An S-B dosing cap well-filled can take .15gms and the Fury2 caps use .1-.08gms. So I tried using less and settled on .06gms in both. This doesn't fill either cap and I was concerned about stuff frying and/or coming out and instantly clogging the screens. First off, the air flow is much freer, so I'm sucking less hard. Then I seem to get just as high with half as many hits. And every hit tastes much fresher. Ya, I have to change caps more often, but that is no big deal as I have like 50 caps. I'm also projecting that my overall consumption will be down 30-50%.

One of the things that I'm learning--for the umpteenth time!--is that I am a chronic over-indulger/push it to the limits person. After two or three hits, the additional six or seven hits that I almost always take are not getting me any higher, are adding to my health issues, and costing me a fair amount of $. Now with this foray into microdosing, I've had less wheezing and better sleeping almost immediately. Let's see if using less and being more conscious continues to help."

Drinking alcohol while vaping, especially beer, has recently started making me very wheezy. :(

When you drink a lot of alcohol the little hairs in your lungs, the cilia, go to sleep and they stop sweeping the dust and contaminants up and out of your lungs. This is why tobacco smokers cough so much when they wake up. It's the way I wound up contracting pneumonia and spending five days in the hospital. Don't do like I did.

My Mighty seemed to be the main culprit for me coughing and lung pulls on the Vapcap did a bit too.
Try drinking Boags Premium Beer, it is bottled with clean Tassie water straight from a mountain spring (Ben Lomond) No factories near here to pollute the water.:myday:

My Advice Lower temps and slower hits. I fill the E-Nano almost all of the way up and I tamp it down firmly but lightly. I start it out at 5:45 work my way up to 6 and work that temp stretch until the ABV is a darkening brown. Then I crank it up to around 7 and finish it off there in a few tokes. Almost all of it seems to get consumed at around 6. And then slower hits. Draw as slowly and continuously for as long as you can but be sensitive to the sensations in your mouth and throat. If you are observing closely you will sense the irritation long before there is any problem. Thus, no coughing. Break away at that point. The vapor you exhale will likely be more wispy. No big clouds. This is good. Big clouds are a waste of weed. To each their own of course, it's their money after all. But doing it this way will make your weed last much longer and you will get wasted in the process, I promise you. Your throat and lungs will thank you too. Good luck.
