borro beads or quartz beads

would you be interested in a single hand use butane vape

MAIN QUESTION AT THIS POINT.
Should I try and where do you recommend purchasing Quartz or borosilicate beads to fit in 18 or 14 mm glass.

Hello, I have been playing around with the idea of introducing beads into the air path of a sticky brick style butane vaporizer. this would be similar to the Lamar flam in the simplest form.

I would introduce the beads directly after the flame intake. They would ideally work as a heat/ air diffuser (to help with hot spots) and also a heat sink (to store heat and extend the potential draw time without extending the torching(heating) period).

I am also interested to hear about other experiences with this type of heat intake/source.

thank you for reading!

How is it operated with one hand? Are you attaching the lighter to the vape like a Stashe Rio?

Honestly I doubt this would reduce butane comsumption but it might make for more even vaporization. Diffusing a torch flame as a vaporization source goes back to the Vapor Genie so it's definitely proven. You'd have to probably experiment to see if it's the right kind of diffusion for your design.

I will probably make a prototype that is similar to The Rio because it is easier to make a case around an existing torch than design a whole new product. Right now this is an idea in my head and the next step is to get some beads that can be heated and cooled repeatedly without risk and test the idea out.

If you wanna put the beads close to the flame, quartz is probably better than boro as it's more resistant to thermal shock.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
Beads are all the rage right now. There seem to be two uses for them, at least in the vaping world :brow:. There's beads to act as a heat sink and improve the effectiveness of extraction, and then there's using them to cool down the vapor path in stems and such.
The Modern Cannabists recently put up a post about 2020 being the year for beads, however it surrounds their use in heaters not cooling or anything else.

If the Volcano Hybrid used glass beads instead of plastic and aluminum maybe S&B wouldn't be in the shit show they're in now.

I've looked into the idea of fitting a torch to the glass but left it on the back burner.
Torches are unreliable and getting one to fit would be a challenge.
The Rio uses a big torch so even though in theory it's usable with one hand it's not very practical and bulky.

Do you think that custom made torch and tank would have the same issues as the small torches on the market now?

I was planning on making a small bead diffused heat sink for a bong to dip my toes into that type of set up. from there I was planning to put together a handheld version. if it ends up being easier to build around a stock torch frame then I will do that too. My dream is to have a handheld squeeze actuated torch to power a single hand use butane vaporizer.

my main concerns.

Igniter lifespan and serviceability.
size
durability and complexity of internal air paths.
butane tank to maximize storage and uses per fill
a torch that is large enough to heat up fast but not combusts the bowl instantly.

@Frontosafanatic yes.
I've stripped and repaired 3 triple torches so far.
Usually it's the small silicone tubes which feed the jets, they get hot and pop off.
Sometimes in spectacular fashion with a ball of flames.
A friend had a quad torch engulf his hand, straight out the window went that torch.
The unreliability of smaller torches has stopped me perusing the windshield/VC rest idea I tried years ago.

I've also seen an expensive Blazer, £80, dab torch which gave up working. Igniter went on that one.

I'd imagine the one in the Rio is removable so if it does go tits up you can replace it.

Only advice I can give you is make sure you can remove any torch you end up going with.
And perhaps get in touch with @funkyjunky and buy a Flam so you have an idea on how something like this functions.

Last thought, don't alienate anyone who has problems with their hand/finger strength. Some of the ignites require a bit too much effort for them to use.

thank you for your insightful response. I will continue on with caution. The torches I have taken apart were also lackluster in build quality. I completely understand your concern with the accessibility of use. I have a couple of family members with severe arthritis and regularly remove the safeties on lighter to make them easier to use.

have you looked into piecing together your own torches? I have been struggling to find information on custom butane tanks and torches. I would imagine the issues with the tubing could be remedied if precautions were taken when installing the torches.

It's starting to seem that I would be designing a torch that has a vape on it more than a vape with a torch in it

Yes and even mentioned custom torches to @VapCap.
George pointed out the worries of litigation.

Find a decent torch with plenty of product support and go from there would be my first move.

In the old days they'd at least wrap a wire on that silly silicon tube like a micro-hose clamp, just above the little dart. Haven't seen that installed in a long time.
