I don't care if it's desktop or portable but would like to find the smoothest tasting vape with the least amount of throat irritation.

I would say that a Cloud Evo with a good hydratube but any vaporizer with enough water filtration can be as smooth as you need. Water filtration affects taste greatly so you might want to experiment with how much filtration you really need. Another great examples of smoothness are the Flowerpot or any Log vaporizer because they are extremely powerful units that can produce thick vapor, and with thick vapor you need less inhalations to get the effect, so your throat is less affected.

In the other side session vapes with short airpaths are the ones that irritate most as you get a great number of hot vapor inhalations.

In addition to a smooth dry herb vaporizer, I think the smoothest cannabis inhalation is done by low temp dabbing or vaping of a clean hash, rosin or other clean extract.
In my experience dry herb vapor is never as smooth as a clean extract.

You might try a more "combustion style" water pipe like a straight tube, with multiple levels of filtration/percolation.

As noted this greatly affects flavor, but realistically the terpenes are probably one of the main antagonists against smooth vapor.

Also, on-demand butane vapes which use direct inhalation tend to be pretty smooth. The word is still out on huffing a jet lighter IMO but the water vapor released during combustion does seem to make for smooth hits. One of my vaporizer concepts I'm working on is butane powered and I've been pretty impressed at the smoothness.

Not sure what your definition of smooth is, its really subjective. But with throat irritation, low temps and water both help.

Just today I vaped my first herb in 18 days due to a cold and asthma. The one I reached for was my edge, with a loosely packed capsule, set to 350F, and I used a medium sized water pipe with the edge wpa.

So a vape with good temperature control and able to be used with water would help with throat irritation.
