is the behavior of the donut heater much different than in the v3/3.5/jetstream? I'd assume some allowances are being made for the quartz (or Ti) cup, but how different are the settings being used?

Titanium crucible, nickel200 preset, 37w, 380F is what I'm running now. The glass crucible runs the coil significantly warmer (also takes longer to heat, preheat tactics even more prevalent) for similar performance, ime. I never used a V3 or V3.5, sorry, but didn't you load wax directly onto the donut coil in those? I'd imagine they'd be much more efficient on your batteries than, V4, yet V4 is efficient with your material.

Been using the v4 on an eleaf invoke with the standard firmware. Set the TCR to 595, 33w & 420F. Working well but will definitely be fine tuning. This is with the quartz cup by the way, haven't tried the Ti cup yet but will probably get to that later in the week.

The crucible on my rig now, the one that came attached, has a lot of play in the cup. I've messed with the clip a bit but still has a lot of wiggle. Neither the spare nor the Ti one I ordered has this issue, not sure what's going on there...

There are two different kinds of ceramic bases for the coils, ones with post holes and ones without. The ones with post holes on the bottom (where the coil leads poke through the ceramic base) have way less wiggle when you Q-tip swab.

Ah cool, was unaware of that. The wiggly one still works fine. Only had it kick out of TC once or twice & both were when I fucked up with the accelerator, ha. Definitely prefer this to the QQ. That one was always a bit finicky for me. May try the updated QQ though. Damn acquisition syndrome & whatnot

is this and “old batch vs new batch”? I receive my V4 today? What kind of ceramic base can I expect?

Thanks, Cody

V4 Noob question. Do I lock my resistance when running in Ni mode, which is .47 on pico?

I was told to lock resistance on QQ, but that was in tcr mode.

Thanks, Cody

I am an old man who just started with all this a few years ago. Only experience has been with Matt’s stuff really. This is my first Ti cup, so other than the qtip after session cleaning, how do I clean my Ti cup?

Now I need to say that compared to the QQ, this thing leaves nothing behind. I would say I’m a low temp user at least compared to Matt’s settings. He recommends 500 on both the QQ and and the v4 with different settings on the Ni vs tcr xxx. I ran 420-450 compared to his recommended 500 on the QQ and find 450 to plenty.

My QQ could stay really clean for quit a while. Most of my burning was from the actual qtips themselves. The v4 is leaving nothing behind. I love feeling like I’m wasting nothing, but my cup is no where near as clean as I ran my QQ.

I’m also thinking the more I clean the more I could break if breakage is going to be gapping from the wobbling. My QQ wobbled a little as well, but never gave me problems.

Thanks, Cody

Steel wool?
Hi, @codyppc !

You can remove and soak the Ti cup in 99% ISO.

For the baked-on-caked-on, you can give it a bath in Powdered Brewers Wash but that can discolor the Ti if you care about cosmetics (but will dissolve all carbon and get squeaky clean).

I use a tiny piece of Magic Eraser or Scrub Stik to get the rest off. I would not recommend steel wool as scraping the different hardness of metal could leave deposits and other nasties.

Whichever method, rinse with distilled water and dry fully.

PS: There are also Quartz crucibles that are a little easier to keep clean. You can torch them just short of red hot (you can also do this with the Ti but it tends to oxidize) or just put in a little distilled water and boil away the gunk in less than a minute using low temps (+/- 300) on your mod.

Hope this helps!

So, steel wool would be a no?

I also used a small, flat head screw driver (poor mans dab took) to scrap crusties. I can see some if the small tool marks maybe even more so after a few sessions. Did I mess up my new Ti cup?

I figured iso would always work. I was just checking to see if something like torch, steel wool, hammer, etc would be better for those “every few grams” cleanings. You answered the torch idea pretty good. Thx

I use a wooden toothpick and a few drops of distilled water heat it up and scratch the carbon off. Then cotton swab the cup. It work really well on the Ti and the Quartz cup.

Not to worry about respect at this point, that was so 'long ago'......

Great you've decided to give it a go. I bet you like it big time although you might end up favoring the 2.5 for routine use like some/many of us? It's a real treat not to have to worry about 'cooking the oil' once set up. That TCR is cool. No, make that hot. No, 'great temperature control'?

You remain 'da man' in Solodom, be nice to hear your 'take' here. Please don't be shy....

Not sure I understand (nothing new there.....), there are lots of neat models out, but my favorite is probably the V2.5 (or 2.7, same thing with a different MP). Best to visit Matt's site to see what he has to offer.

IMO 2.5 is plenty cheap, performs well, and is a good place to start with TCR.

If you want to know which ones I consider 'off the list' ("out"), that's a different question and really pretty subjective........

2020 is here wow, word is the fda is coming down on the vape community this may, we will see. they have been saying that for the last few years but now with the momentum of the vape gate this last year they might get somewhere, i guess they want 25k to 1mil to clear your atomizer for retail sales. my idea is to test the v4 and the new edition of the quest(coming soon) to a point to where they will be looking at my testing methods as a standard for the world!(high hopes, you have to dream) FDA certified lab where i want to test atomizers at the highest burn off temps(dry burn) for any particulates in the billions. second is to get these tests reviewed by third party lab that will sign their name on the dotted line with there professional opinion and comparison to real world exposures to theses particulates and how much it would take to injure or kill you. with these test i think i can take on the FDA and have something to fight with .. this test and review will be less than 20k but i think would be the best investment and the best way to show the community what we are exposed to using these devices. now adding concentrates and terps is a whole other story and what healing or poisoning takes place will be the next 50 yrs of tests. but what I want to do is at least complete 50% of the equation and bring a device that is tested to the world. if you have a tested concentrate and my product's test clean as well then you will be doing everything you can to vape in the the safest possible way in my opinion. i am sure there are variables but it's a start.

new things and ideas forming for 2020:
bottomless bangers for the v4 to attach to your rig
SIC cups and aluminum nitride cups for v4 and quest
new base for quest now easier to rebuild and clean with out compromising heaters.
forced air concentrate unit (nice dreams_) so easy your grandma can use it
revamp on all atomizer parts used before off gas test. (all silicone parts with will be switched to peek from now on in all productions)

That's pretty lame, but hardly more that 'par for the course'? And highly likely to go overboard, as they are want to do......

The few (HS kids over doing it with black market THC carts) are drawing attention and spoiling it for the rest? Where have we seen this happen? Still, 'they' need to be seen doing something.

Hey, how about you redefine your products as aroma therapy......get put in with Air Wick and those guys? We won't tell.

Please keep us advised as this progresses? Might be time to stock up? Thanks once again.

I love everything you said you will be doing. Can you please either make the banger deeper or an option for a deeper banger? And I can’t tell if it is already, but could the banger have a beveled lip?

I’ve read somewhere from someone who’ve tested with thermocouples saying a tcr range between 345 and 410 will work best.

First off, 'metal is metal' when it comes to TCR but the shape can have an effect since we want to know the temperature where the concentrate is, not the average for the whole unit. And, of course, the exact alloy of the metal is a factor.

That said, Titanium is like most elemental metals, shows about 1/3 of a percent per degree C change. Since the number we use is in PPM, not percent, that number is say 3300 PPM. To save display space, mods drop the end zero and we display "330". FWIW Joytech uses 352 and 366 for their default values for the two 'grades' they have settings for.

That said m values for TCR and target temperatures you set are linked directly. The mod multiplies the 'percent per degree C change' number by the 'needed degree C change' setting you input, the 'degrees C' parts cancel each other (one being 'per' therefore divided by....) and the 'answer' (product) from multiplying the two tells the mod what percent change to look for. Since it's easy to 'fish' the apparent temperature around to get the results you want. Then decide what you want to see as a set temperature and change the TCR value to make that happen. That is say you want the display to read 390 (370 rise) not 450 (420 rise) as it now shows figure it's 50 degrees hotter in the display than you want. So divide the 50 degree error by the 390 setting to get about 13% and raise the TCR value by that amount. Multiply whatever you're using by 1.13. You should now get the expected performance at 390 instead (since the mod will be using the same product of the values internally).

Regards to all.
