The Nomad From Morwood

I’m very happy to be getting an awesome sleeve too, but apart from that and needing to get used to seeing Nomads with the taller collar, it looks like a real improvement overall on what I think was already the best portable design around. Great job once again, Dan!

Hopefully I’m already back on the list too. I love the new base and I think there are some different ways to push the envelope artistically without the sleeve, plus I bet the more rounded shape is nice to hold. Don’t worry though, my Nomad I will still get plenty of use. :D

@Dan Morrison I also noticed the air intake hole is smaller; is that enough to make a difference in draw resistance or anything, or is it more of an aesthetic choice?

I'm really glad to see the new designs are online now for everyone to see, being on the latest list for the Nomad I had a choice to either stay with that or go with the new version. Was a super tough decision as I love the look of them both but after discussing the choice with Dan (thank you again) what he's creating for me suited the Nomad II design better. Awesome beautiful work @Dan Morrison

I would love a Nomad II in highly figured black walnut, just like Dan’s photos and having the option of a second species for the bottom plate & collar has got my brain buzzing. There’s some exciting possibilities there for sure.

I’m kinda relieved that I don’t have a paper choice to make, tbh. All wood is much more down my street anyway. All the sudden I am very excited about 2020, The Year of the Nomad II. I’m also interested in other options for the button, other than lichen or abalone, if Dan gives me the green light.

Thanks @Dan Morrison for this unexpected news, think it’s great move as far as I’m concerned. Plus you’ve made a rainy & lazy Saturday morning much more exciting for me! God I hope I’m in the next round, I can’t take much more anticipation. What if I give ya a doctor’s note saying that the stress is bad for my compromised immune system? Maybe bump the sickie up? :brow:

:peace: Happy Saturday Good People! :leaf:

Side pulls for easy bottom plate removal.

Just beautiful, @Dan Morrison !

Can you give a little more info and pictures of the side pull(s)? Am I right that this is a separate piece integrated into the base?

With the smaller footprint, is the Nomad II stable to stand upright without concern of tipping? Or do you recommend it lay on its side when not in use...even with a full load?

2020 is gonna be exciting!!!

Big news!

I'm dropping the new Nomad II in 2020.

Order emails have gone out to those who are next in line on the wait list. I only sent out about 25 emails, as always, the Nomads are crafted in small batches.

I see this as a continuation in the Nomad saga, not a replacement of the Nomad I, but a compliment. The Nomad II heaters are backwards compatible with the Nomad I, so any future design improvements can be used by Nomad I owners.

The Nomad I, like the Okin, will be a limited run vaporizer. I'm going to cease production after this batch goes out. While I'd love to keep making the Nomad I, I can only focus on one at a time.

__

The Nomad II is all about the wood, and I'll have plenty of custom species to pick from for a huge array of looks.

Here's some photos!

The bottom plate is now magnetic. Large rare earth magnets are squeezed into the design for a very hardy click and super secure hold. The magnets and matching steel pins are mechanically held into their holes, no adhesives here.

The inset bottom perfectly fits the bottom plate so there's no play between the parts.

The connector between the heater module pin and the battery terminal is inset into the wooden bottom plate, and automatically adjusts to varying battery heights. It's spring loaded.

To lock the device, all that's needed is to take the bottom plate off, turn it 180 degrees, and click it back into place. Super quick and easy.

The battery is fully enclosed in wood, no way for the shell to ever touch metal.

So there you have it.

I've got a soft case design that will also be available. The soft case will be small pocket friendly for added protection on the go.

And, as always, I'll be continuing development of new/better heater modules to go along with the Nomad lineup. I've got some things in the pipe.
HOLY SHIT!
Wow, I absolutely LOVE the OG Nomad, and will mourn the loss of the sleeve and all the possibilities for artistic expression it affords, BUT......
I love the new look EVEN MORE!
Seriously, that really floats my boat.
The new bottom cap seems like a fantastic step forward, especially if it allows for a quick and easy 'safety switch' as you describe .
I love the subtly curved surfaces, and softened edges too.

I'm not usually one for logos and such, but I like yours a lot (which is why I requested it on my sleeve) and think that if you were to hot brand it in to the body It might be a popular addition (You've probably considered this already though).
God that walnut is just superb .

Please add me to your Nomad II list Dan, come hell or high water I will find a way to afford one by the time my name comes up!

I'm totally digging the subtle refinement and of this ultra sweet handmade vaporizer! Looks like it fits the hands really well, loving this wood centric design too, the sleeves are beautiful (truly, every single one) but I'm really feeling the custom shop guitar vibes of that beautiful wood!

Think I need to get on board with this one before the rest of you combustion fuckers shove me to the end of the line :D

Yep, I’ve asked to be added to the list. My OG Nomad is great, but the II looks amazing. A perfect melding of beauty and simplicity.

@Dan Morrison I also noticed the air intake hole is smaller; is that enough to make a difference in draw resistance or anything, or is it more of an aesthetic choice?

That's an aesthetic choice, it fits with the smaller bottom plate nicer. No effect on draw resistance. Also, I did find that if you wanted to you could use your finger over this smaller hole to have very fine micro adjustment of airflow. I still didn't find that this airflow adjustment was necessary, but cool bonus.

I assume the waiting list automatically switches over?

Yep!

Hmmm, so if those of us who are on the latest batch being worked on ALL switch to the Nomad II, does that mean we all get it quicker? :)

hahaha, no. I did plan for this, if it happened. But in reality I'll still need the time to prep for the new model, Tooling, jigs, you know... fyi 9 people made the switch.

Just beautiful, @Dan Morrison !

The side pulls are indeed a separate piece of wood, inlaid into the bottom plate wood. And yep! it'll stand upright no problem, doesn't feel tippy at all. The bottom plate doesn't move, and always attaches flat, even if you're using slightly different length batteries.

Thanks for the love everyone!! :) :) :)

I work in a vacuum, just me, my girlfriend and our dog. Up here in the woods. So when I shared this new design It was quite scary.. I really have no idea how something is going to go over. All of your warm thoughts have made this snowy sat. morning feel like a balmy summer afternoon!

@pxl_jockey , I'll get at you my dude!

Now that the button and woods are the main elements of the design, I am looking at adding new button materials. I'm currently getting the tools together to cut opal, so we may see that as a future option, although it is a pricey material, so likely an expensive upgrade. I'll be looking around for more gemstones to use as well...we will see.

@Copacetic , Thank you my friend!

And yeah, It took me a while to get over the idea of using magnets... but after feeling them in use, oh baby it's like silk. The safety switch takes no effort, and I can do it with huge mitts on, big plus.

And ha! yes, I've already begun getting requests for a carved/stamped/burned logo in the bottom corner. I do think it would look very nice. It's something that I'm thinkin about.

Hey, what about offering the "paper" sleeve as an option? But this time it would be more like a band than a sleeve and it wouldn't have to be removable. Think just a wrap around the center part of the body. You could use a small pin on the side to secure it in place if it's not tight enough.

Could be a nice customization option for those opting for more classic woods that are more uniform than exotics, burls and other figured or spalted marvels.

I think Bocote would be lovely as bottoms & collars. Hey, might look great as a body as well!

Thanks for the digital mockups Dan! This is a very exciting development.

EDIT: hey @Dan Morrison , how about numbers four and nine?
