Volcano Hybrid

Sent my Mighty in for service, and the downtime is getting me to look at other options in the meantime.

Looking the hybrid, I can't help to think that there isn't much innovation over the earlier volcanoes, other than the redesign of the filling chamber and the addition of the whip.

Adding the extra metal inside the collar is what gives it the extra conduction heating...that's it. It's nothing complicated or strange. I'd love to see this reworked to fit the classic and digital versions. People will be still drawn to the new and shiny version with Bluetooth, but it boggles the mind why the main advancement isn't retrofitted to the tried and true tanks (especially the classics). Seems the touch screens, and other gadgetry are unnecessary, and honestly...just additional fluff.

I'd be game for grabbing a classic (or even a plenty), with this rather modest upgrade in connection tek. S&B would have a monsoon of orders for the retrofit part.

I thought it was cheaper to purchase a new Mighty on sale rather than sending in for the 'service'? My Mighty cost US$225 (Nov 2018)

Edit; OOps, thought it was the Mighty thread.

as i said earlier, the device doesn´t need more innovation, it is like a Macbook, an 2010 macbook looks the same as an 2018 Macbook but it is thinner and faster. that´s it. what should it do additionally, making coffee? ;-) in the end it is still about vaping herbs which it does better than most other vaporizers.

the Hybrid has a 40second heat up time which allows for fast hits with the whip which you can´t get with the other models and which is the main selling point. just think about 10 sessions, you have to wait 3 minutes every time with the old models and with the new one 40seconds, it definitely adds up in time spent waiting for the device to be ready.

when someone wants that fast heat up, conduction heating and the whip you have to buy the Hybrid as there won´t be any retrofit for the older models because well, they want to sell this new Volcano version.

if someone is fine with bag only and longer heat up, the Classic is still there to buy and it is cheaper than ever used because many people are selling their Classics to buy a Hybrid.

The Plenty while still a good device is is a model from yesteryear with the long heatup time and heat cycles, this is an device which feels really old in 2019 imo, i´ve sold it directly after getting the Hybrid as i had no use for it anymore.

i don´t really see where the device needs more innovation as it is a cult classic vaporizer which more or less kicked off the whole vaping craze 20 years ago. surely they will stick to the design because it is iconic and the reason why it is named Volcano. maybe a more silent pump would have been nice but that is frankly the only thing where i see potential for improvement

in function they just modernized it with Bluetooth, workflows through the app, faster heat up, finally a whip and added conduction heating.

i think when they do a new Mighty it will be the exactly same: faster heat up, Bluetooth app support and maybe a little more compact, the rest will be the same because there isn´t much left to improve.

That just happened...
We are dealing with pushing hot air through ground herb. In my opinion there will never be any innovation that is leaps and bounds over existing methods. It is a well understood and mature process at this point.

So you move up to concentrates.

And then what's next?

I am no longer a seeker searching for that next big thing. I just live, appreciate and enjoy. :)

A rosin press then,
A Switch with induction heating and a built-in light show to 'trip' on.

It will be interesting to see how long until the RRP on the Hybrid will drop a bit.
Already owning a Plenty, I am thinking the Classic might 'do' for my first foray into bags as I really dislike using silicon whips, the Hybrid might not suit me.
Funny how I say the Classic Volcano will 'do' as it was classed by many as industry's best for many years.

I meant "warranty repair". My bad.... :p

Hopefully they don't try and jerk me around. I've heard they can be great, but also terrible. How they handle my RMA will go a long way in helping me decide on buying a Plenty or Hybrid Volcano. They've had my unit since last Thursday, and no word.

I'm kinda hoping they at least talk to me, I want to ask them if there's been any service issues with the new Hybrid. I've heard of DOA units so far.

To Me the Hybrid is a step backwards. :puke:

Both the 'Digit' and the 'Plenty' will Never be surpassed, for my Medicinal use. :horse:

I've already bought a spare 'Plenty' and just waiting for good
discount on the 'Digit' to get a backup

Does the Digit display make that much of a difference compared to the classic model?
Are you able to tune in the temp on the classic model using the number system or is it not too accurate?

As someone who has used a Volcano classic (only twice) and never the digital I can see where this upgrade may fall short in some areas namely pump noise, maybe bag crinkleness (noise) and possibly durability of the flimsy orange top plastic piece (we won't know on that for sure but hopefully it's not a concern).

That being said, the features they did improve on are huge IMO. 45 second heat up? Hell yes. Being able to control the vape across the house (if the Bluetooth is strong enough) is also amazing. The "coding" aspect (reminds me of my kids coding intro apps/games) of the app and being able to manipulate temperatures, fan on time, pauses for heat soak etc. is very cool.

I have always wanted a Volcano and even though this model is considerably more expensive ($900 CDN) there doesn't seem to be anything else out there that checks all the boxes that the Hybrid does, or at least checks them so well.

That's just the opinion of one man looking in from the outside though.

Oh stop it with the self-deprecation, please sir. I mean, it’s really sweet that you’re trying to mix with the common people. Especially like the whole “gosh, it’s a whole $900 CDN” act. C’MON! WE CAN READ, DUDE!!!

You are the Master of Squirrels, most of us here couldn’t possibly fathom your luxurious lifestyle. Seriously!

Would you chose the hybrid out of all 3 models of the Volcano now available? is there a difference in taste at all with these different units?

I don't plan on using concentrates but the whip might be nice for a water attachment yet I'm looking at mainly using the balloon method.

The Hybrid is an on demand vaporizer, a quick hit before you leave the house. The digit/classic require too much warm up time.

There is also improved vapor production, and the app makes bags super convenient.

Hybrid is heads and shoulders above the digit/classic. Maybe not enough to justify the price for some.

I just think if this thing is going to last you 10 years, an extra couple of hundred bucks would be worth spending on the Hybrid. It's just a far better user experience, even though the end results are around the same-ish.

For My use, Medicinal Vaping, the Digit will remain Supreme
For just getting High and Quick Hitting there are many Vapes out there better, and
Much cheaper too. :mental:

back to my problem with the electrical noise which occurs in intervals:

tried another power socket, the same
tried another power cable, the same

then, i´ve read the instruction manual and came across a section which speaks about the bluetooth module, i´ve put off the module, nothing changed.

for the people here who have the Hybrid: when turning the device around and putting your ear to the black ground part of the device where the silver sticker is do you hear a constant static interference like sound? i can hear some kind of constant static sound coming out of the device and this is exactly the sound that sometimes occurs louder.

frankly, it sounds a little bit like coil whine, many PC power adaptors and graphic cards have this problem too. this can occur because the electrical power makes the inner technical parts vibrate which results in some kind of constant sound.

i also hear the Mighty´s high frequency sound when it is in use and i really wonder if maybe the Volcano static sound is normal but to my ears it is louder than for other people. my girlfriend doesn´t hear anything, she could only hear the sound when putting the ear directly to the black ground plate of the device.

don´t know what i should do tbh, contacting Storz and Bickel and ask about it? also thought about sending the device in just to make sure that this is a normal sound. if they send it back and still makes this sound i know it is normal, if they exchange the unit and the sound is gone maybe i had a unit with an over sensitive power supply/coil whine.

Just goofing around with your handle, @SquirrelMaster it was completely facetious but I realise now that you have no experience with my warped sense of humour and I probably should have used lots of smileys to signal it was all completely in jest. Sorry about that, hope you didn’t feel senselessly attacked by a random stranger on FC. I should be nicer, or at least act like it.

I just like having as much functionality as i can in one device
Jack of all trades, master of none comes to mind, I think I may go a digit or older as I am chasing flavour, I can have a quick hit of a few different vapes while I wait for the old Volcano to heat. (I do this already with my WoodScents).

Ha ha all good, I was initially thinking I said something to offend you and I was taken back but then I was confused with the emoji at the end of your post. I have a super twisted sense of humour and I encourage others to be just as twisted. It's a lot fun :D.

I think I like non-digital dials and controls.

I've yet to have any all digital devices stand any long term length and test of time. Touch screens seem particularly less durable.

My Fire fly 2 touch only buttons were particularly finicky.

Maybe mechanical dials and controls with a mix of blue tooth would cover reliability with digital control?
