TV Shows - General Discussion

I really like this show, Vince Gilligan is a great writer and showrunner. For me there's a little something missing though to lift Better Call Saul (and Breaking Bad) into my personal very top tier, and that's a truly relatable development of characters that I just don't see in both shows. But that's complaining at a very high level, still I'm always looking forward to any new episode.

I reckon TV screenwriters and showrunners are tapping into the stoner market more and more as legalisation increases. "Counterpart" (Starz) is my current favourite. Layer, upon layer, upon layer of awesomeness with a sci-fi premise, although it's more of a cold War spy story than hard science fiction. Love it.

EDIT : plus lots of gratuitous sex - what's not to like?

Watched several episodes of Homecoming last night on prime. Caught my interest. It was with my son so I'm waiting for him to get home tonight before I resume (with or without him). I like the @ 10 episode style. Different feel than the season-long shows. I know pretty quickly if I'll like them or not. If I don't I don't bother and if I do it's not a lifetime commitment. I wish they'd do more of them. Between prime and netflix release like one every two weeks.

Got through the final episodes of Homecoming this weekend. Mixed feelings. Really nicely filmed. Slightly interesting story to start with but started to meander, then had to find a way back to wrap up an idea that wasn't all that well conceived from the beginning. Won't be signing on for season two if they have the gumption to make one.

For those that liked Legion, how'd like the finale? I thought they wrapped it up quite well.

They all lived and died happily ever after.

[SPOILERS]

Ehhhh not really? They literally rebooted and erased everything that happened lol I did like it fine though because it looked so cool and had such big ideas, the style!

The Boys was mentioned in the Netflix thread (it's on Prime) and it's a good story so far (I'm three episodes in). Adult content for sure but nicely balanced, not too gruesome, some cool characters and some assholes too. I hope the good guys win.

Just binged the first (only?) season of "Years and Years", a BBC - HBO co-production. Beginning in the present day, the first episode (of six) quickly skips ahead five years. Each subsequent episode takes place one year later than the previous, so the main years are 2024-2029. (The last episode briefly peers further ahead.)

Often wonder why more shows and movies don't confront the concern many feel for even the near future. Must be pretty challenging to get right. Another that succeeds is "Black Mirror". Rory Kinnear, who played the poor British Prime Minister forced to fuck a pig on national television in that series, plays a central character in this one. Emma Thompson brilliantly plays the (nationalist) PM this time around. Strikes a welcome chord of taking responsibility for the world we've made. And ends on a hopeful note reminding us that times will surely change, for better and worse, in the years to come.

Getting ready for a good binge or two or three. The Expanse has season 3 on queue; just watched season 0 where they try to catch you up for the upcoming season. The story's kind of a mess but I'll see if I can follow. Then the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which I've enjoyed a lot so far. And sometime pretty soon Sabrina's back. That's a few weekends of fun ahead at some point!

Didn't get into that Carnival show. Maybe two episodes.

I just started watching Succession and am really enjoying it so far. Highly recommended. Also I don't know if Fleabag has been mentioned here, but that's great; hilarious and smart from start to finish. And I've been working my way back through Six Feet Under, having last watched it when I was a teenager, it's interesting to watch as an adult now (still just as good as I remember).

@TheThriftDrifter, tell me more about what you like in British comedy, I may well be able to recommend you more :)
