Koa is pretty. It's also very dense, and the unit weighs considerably more than say a Cherry unit. I'm sure @P.A.M., you are loving that Koa unit!

Today is shop cleaning / organizing day. Mrs. V offered to help, so I'm going for it. I have two shops, one small desk top assembly / electronics shop and one full blown wood shop. The assembly shop is inside my house, in my basement. The wood shop is a shed that I built myself (with a contractor buddy) in my back yard measuring 28 feet by 16 feet, with 10 foot ceilings. All finished inside and out (like a small house) - a virtual vape factory. It's big, and needs to be cleaned out. Lots of contractor bags will be used, as I pull everything out. I'm going to be building some shelving, using plywood and 2 x 3's. I'm just about all caught up, so now is the time to get ready for future builds. This will help speed production in the long run and now is the time.

My flower guy went on vacation, didn't answer texts. I thought I'd have to drive to Boston , but his plane landed from his vacation last night and I'm phat with flower. This latest stuff is so fluffy (goes a long way), even dried and ground, and the Elite can cook it up in like 4 hits. Normally, I'd rather sip, but this stuff lends itself to blasting through a bowl in 4 monster smooth hits, and the effect is (me right now). Very nice...

how could I forget?

I received my LB Elites as well. Good looking units and I'll try to post pics later. I've been using it pretty exclusively for the past couple of days since receiving it. Broke the glass liner within 5 minutes of using the LB. It just slipped out of the tube while I was handling the LB...just wasn't paying attention as I'm not used to watching out for a liner.

That said, I believe that I found a better solution for cooling. I capped one end of the stem with a top hat screen (using as a bowl) and then I placed about 12 6mm glass beads into the stem. I then formed a conical screen that I pushed down the MP end of the stem to trap the beads. Works really well in terms of cooling and no worries of breakage.

The first hit is always very tasty and satisfying but I am having an issue with getting a hot spot in the center of the bowl. Are there any tips to avoid this or is stirring in between hits the only way?

I actually full on combusted last night! I definitely need more time to figure out about how long to hold down the button for in wattage mode.

I found that I needed to slow my draw intake with the stock tubes. You can also “feather” the button on and off... hold down for a few seconds, let off for a second or two, then push the button again for a few seconds. Helps control how much heat is in the oven chamber and let’s your draw be more forgiving.

With the stem/insert provided, I've actually had a great experience so far with only some minimal hot spots. I swapped over to TC for a bit, but can't seem to get as good of hits compared to Wattage mode. Perhaps this is because I'm used to fully unregulated vs mod regulated.

I got ambitious and used my 19 m/m stem/adapter with it through water. At the time I'd also already run 3 loads through this on top of 3 G-43 loads, so I probably just lost count mid-pull and forgot to let the button go!

@MothChewMoth jajaja , yeah, using your Bud with water , you will want to limit control time of your trigger squeeze. It's fun to practice. Practice makes perfect .

@flammy - congratulations on your new Bud ! Try turning down the ohm .5 at a time maybe until it reduces your hot spot but still give clouds. Too sharp a ohm drop and you'll lose clouds . Might take a few bowls to fine tune but should/might do the trick without changing overall power or performance .

I’ll chime in here re hot spots. I think hot spots are dependent on multiple factors, but I notice them the most when I try to pack to much. I suggest trying a full bowl, just lightly tamped, with a nice fluffy grind. It appears, IMHO, that the tighter packs create denser pockets of available air path, and the air just follows the path of least resistance. It seems that reducing the tightness of the pack and slowing down my draw speed minimizes (not eliminates) hot spotting.

All that said, I also believe that vaping itself is a fine line...you’re trying to extract maximum effect without burning the material. Sure, the bong never hot spots, ‘cause the shit is gone, nothing to compare. Conduction vapes don’t hot spot as much, ‘cause of the oven surrounding the material. IMHO hot spots are a thing to be forever vigilant about when using on-demand convection, and I don’t think they’ll ever go completely away. I know many will say that this vape or that vape doesn’t hot spot, but I think that’s more a function of your usage pattern with it.

For me, I simply buy crab/nut picks by the four pack and keep them everywhere around the house.

Let me explain my theory on the way a bowl heats up.

Yes, it is a very fine line we walk with pure convection. And the Elite is 100% convection, without a hint of conduction. The coils start out as approximately 1/2 inch x 3 inch ss wire mesh (at a specific gauge and squares per inch), sitting directly under the roasting tube that was bored out of the same original hole. The mesh is then rolled into a 12 mm diameter coil that sits about 9 or 10 mm from the tip of your roasting tube. Since it is installed in the same hole as the taper above but just from below, it's vertically lined up going in. What sets our coil apart is the fact that it sits vertically in the compartment below, and is the same shape as the shaft it's in, as well as the same diameter of the inside of the roasting tube. It was made for the Elite (or iHeat) and the 19/22 tube.

With certain strains, bowls, the convected heat is greater in the middle of the tube, even if it rises from the coil equally from all six unencumbered layers (due to the insta heat coil). This is the reason airflow is so wide open. But there are lots of factors involved in hot spots, mostly to do with drying, grinding, packing, tamping, drawing - or the load itself. Stirring does take care of that, but starting low and ramping up helps also. Maybe some of our non-stirrers can chime in with advice.

Shop is cleaned up pretty good, best it's been in 2 years. It was super hot, sweat dripping from my body, sawdust stuck everywhere, I was miserable - so much rather be building.
My wife didn't bat an eye... :myday:

Random walnut wood porn

Know that @Bravesst creates and appreciates walnut tables. This was delivered today. Woodworker found a slab that captured the graft from English to Californian black walnut sometime in the early 20th century -- human engineered trees to withstand disease. This one grew a split trunk. Butterfly joints bind the split and resin fills the voids

Using temp control exclusively over here.

I'm getting better efficiency than I imagined with temp stepping on this. The effects are on par with the LB Classic (top tier) and it can accurately hit the different levels of extraction in perfect sequence.

I usually stir every ~3 or so hits but also rotate the tube a bit between every 1 or 2 hits to even things out.

Tie yourself to a chair or post , you will get high !!! Congratu-Koa-lations, enjoy your evening with your new Bud

I've gone as far as ankle weights, but never had to tie myself to a chair...

It's summer 2019 and Vapwood is in full swing. Both the Classic and Elite continue to sell at a moderate pace, but we are poised to take things to the next level. My process has been fine tuned many times over, and it's time to reap the benefits of the successful merging of what I truly feel is the most advanced heater on the vape market today, the instaHeat coil, with the DNA 75C control board from Evolv, into a single, all-in-one, 18650 powered (swappable) handcrafted unit, without the need for any external accessories.

Electronics | Coil | Battery - placed side by side by side in a single handcrafted wooden body

5 REASONS WHY TO BUY AN ELITE - EXPLAINED

Why is the unit easy to clean?
On demand convection heat is very clean. We are forcing hot air through an organic substance that is below combustion potential, thus releasing the oils (turning them to vapor). When this is done efficiently the result is a very dry, easy to dump, and clean with just a pick tool. Every so often you'll need to remove the screen to change, clean, or burn off, but that is really about it.

Why is the Elite so battery efficient?
Energy, both electrical and heat, doesn't leak. The Elite features soldered connections throughout. All non insulated wire is tinned heavily. Butt and ring connectors are used where necessary for a very strong, low resistance, connection. For a convection vape, we want everything to stay as cool as possible, or else we are wasting battery life heating wood, glass. With no glass 19/22 fitting, heat is not radiated as well into the unit, thus preserving precious battery life. Almost all the heat goes into the load.

Why is the Elite so herb efficient?
That is truly the nature of an on demand convection vape with a powerful coil heater, and a good control board. The Elite allows you to control heat and power to match your vape style, adjusting to you.

Why is the Elite so simple to use?
The DNA 75C control board does all the work, and is programmed to vape dry herb right outta the box. It features wattage control and temp control, both with various levels of controlling preheat. What's amazing is how simple the user interface can be, after being programmed for dry herb use. You don't have to convert an e-cig mod box into a vape for dry herb. This unit leaves the shop ready for cannabis.

Why is the Elite's taste so superior?
The purer than pure, all wood and steal air path. The stainless steel coil sits in a wooden, stainless steel foil lined compartment. Above, sits an all wood tapered bowl, which accepts an all wood roasting tube. I find that the wooden tube vs glass, keep things a bit smoother as the temp in the tube is kept to a minimum due to wood's low level of conductivity. I don't find the wood adds much taste of it's own. It's all cannabis.

REMINDER: DIRTY30 saves you $30

@ChooChooCharlie I love the walnut live slab with bow ties!!!

The Koa unit is performing much better now. I've adjusted the ohms considerably from .333 to .298 and the hot spotting issue is mostly gone. Using cool profile. Might tinker with material profiles but haven't had chance to jump into escribe. That said, its really close to working spot on it seems.

Two of my favorite units. Glad both are working well. Koa is a different animal.

Gotta get some good well lit shots of it in nature

Tried to get some good shots outside today but there ended up being some noticeable dry spots on the wood so I ordered a beeswax based wood conditioner to do it right.

I'm putting some if the less noticeably dry spot pics in this post so they don't go to waste but I'll make another attempt once I give her a proper shine.

That's gotta be the most gorgeous backplate I've seen on that Koa!
@flammy Is that a walnut roasting tube on the left? I like how dark that one is.

Good morning FC!
Another great day on Long Island. Today, I will continue shop organizing. I need to build some shelves, throw out some more stuff, yadi, yadi, yada... Bottom line, organization means efficiency.

Had a major spike in website traffic the last few days, resulting in a few sales. Some came from Google search, some direct, but quadruple the traffic usually means something is brewing, I just can't figure out what.

My side project will be addressed this week. I think some of you might be very surprised to find out what it's all about. I'm happy to say, the ideas are getting better and better, and we're closer to a viable design.

Not much is going to change with the Elite itself. I'm not saying minor improvements will not happen over time, but the design, process, programming, is pretty set. At this point, every change needs to be evaluated heavily, so as not to possibly alter performance in the wrong direction.

Vape on my friends...

would love to act as an official reseller of your great products over here in Europe, but this f.... regulations with CE and all this stuff makes it impossible :(
That would be awesome! Speaking of which, the special Elite (actually it was exactly like all the rest) has landed in Canada, specifically in Sneaky Pete territory. I'm excited, nervous, but confident in Elite cross appeal. If you like to get high, it's kinda hard not to like the Elite.

I've figured out this new strain I just broke into. Fluffy, a bit wetter, even though it's stored in C-vault with boveda packs. I can't shortcut the drying time. I need to get this weed where it crumbles by hand before grinding it for optimum results in the tube. So freaking satisfying when you figure out the strain. I am back at lower wattage as well. Sweet Jesus!!!

Shop rearranging is done. I must've sweat out 10 lbs once again. I drank 2 pints of water already. I had to build some shelves, nothing fancy, but working with 8 foot sheets of plywood is very different than the finish work or vape building. I am tired, and think I'm calling it an early day. Mrs. Vapwood is at the beach with friends, so I'm home alone. My body is hot, tired, in need of some rest. Like my mom would always say, tomorrow is another day.

can i ask to mr. vapwood the estimated delivery time for a shipping in italy (europe)?!

do you think i can get the vaporizer before august 7th?

also, i'm a total noob with box-mode, can i use this vaporizer like a normal vape?
i explain myself better, this is my tipical session: a couple of hits at low temp (160-175° C), couple of hits a mid temp (180-195) and then i finish the session at high temp for maximum extraction at 200-215° C.

is this possible and easy to do with your vaporizer?

thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

In all honesty, August 7th will be cutting it close. I cannot 100% guarantee it. If not the 7th, really soon after. I plan on starting assembly in a week or so. If you were domestic, I'd say yes.

Thanks for all of the tips, everyone. Adjusting draw speed was the last step to getting good sessions. This vape has a very open air flow that I'm not used to but I find that a draw that mimics normal breathing speed works best. Still open to any more pointers people might have.

I also want to thank @Bravesst for reaching out via DM to offer help after seeing my post about my need to make adjustments. It's nice to see a manufacturer do this. I still need a little more time with my Elites before I can comment on this vape in earnest but so far, I'm liking it.

That back plate was a very nice surprise. The picture doesn't do it justice. A gorgeous piece of burl with a few small natural inclusions. At first I thought it was black walnut but I think it's actually Koa based on the grain pattern. Roasting tube on left is walnut...on the right is blackwood.

Tried to get some good shots outside today but there ended up being some noticeable dry spots on the wood so I ordered a beeswax based wood conditioner to do it right.

As an FYI, I used a walnut conditioner that came with my Dreamwood Glows and it really helped bring out the figuring in the maple. I'm going to give it another coat today.
