The Nomad From Morwood

Dan just sent me some fantastic shots of my Nomad via insta' DM, and it's safe to say that I am head over heels in love with the way my new vape looks.
Dan is defying the usual understanding of the word 'custom' in these vapes.
A 'standard' Nomad is a unique, gorgeous work of art that goes beyond what any other vape manufacturer (and there's some friggin' STIFF competition out there) offers as a standard model.
Then there's the extra thought and effort put into the custom units.
Holyyyyy crap.

Paint mixing is no trivial task, especially when you have a very specific colour in mind.
I requested a colour that Dan found he couldn't achieve with his usual choice of milk-paint.
At this point Dan had already conducted his own research and experiments into my first (impossible!) request (I'd asked if he thought it possible to make a translucent sleeve to show off more of the fantastic box-elm he was using for my Nomad).
He determined (after some experimentation) that translucent wasn't going to be possible, so we settled on another opaque solution, but the colour/s I had in mind weren't possible with milk-paint so he set about trying to find a paint that would allow mixing the reds (blood/ox-blood red~almost black) I had in mind.
He tried a variety of paints including acrylics (too plasticy and artifical to satisfy Dan) and even nail varnish (wouldn't dry hard in the thickness he demands for Nomad sleeves, among other problems).
He favoured oils, which can have the colour saturation sought, but they would take months to dry and fully cure to full strength.
Eventually he decided to try casein paints (which I have heard of, but never once used) as they keep the natural, traditional aesthetic he favours, and also achieve the durability required by a device which will live in a pocket.

I have lots of experience mixing and matching paint colours (arts degree) and know the difficulty achieving specific hues without colours muddying or deviating from the intended.
I never truly mastered colour mixing, it's not as easy as many think.
Add to that the peculiarities of casein (e.g. goes off, so can't simply be bought in a tube off the shelf) and you begin to see the effort Dan has put in, JUST to meet my desires for sleeve colour!

I apologise for the lack of pic's in this post, but the last method I'd successfully learned to post pic's from imgbb no longer works, so hopefully anyone interested can just click on the links in the following spoiler:

I'm praying for a smooth and speedy journey

Someone let me know if the image links work? (I'm attempting all this from my phone)

Sweet one!!!

I feel lucky to have been following al this from day one in this thread (I believe I might be with the next batch), and it just keeps getting better.

Some of these come out so nice one might be scared to use such a work of art... I love how these works of art are used to elevate once mind, looks like sometimes you do not even need weed with this vape... Just gaze at it...

Dang it @Copacetic ! Fuckin’ A the image links work!!! This isn’t the first time I’ve been unduly influenced by one of your posts and I’m tired of it. :D Not saying you’ve ever steered me wrong but still...Dang it!

So I’ve read this thread for some time now, even reached out a few months ago & DM’d with Dan, who gave me all the details and absolutely no pressure, just a kind reassurance that he’d be there if/when I was ready to jump in. That made it very difficult indeed to abstain but still I held strong, telling myself “I don’t need another portable, even if it’s a one-of-a-kind exquisite showstopper”.

I found joy & satisfaction in the Nomadic journey of others, admiring the choices made and the details in the finished product. All of that spiritual growth shot to hell today cos I’m getting on the list, whatever the iteration/batch. I’ve been able to avoid VAS this year, mainly through GASing  but turns out that I need Morwood in my life. :disgust:

EDIT: done! So happy & a little confused why I didn’t do this much sooner? Love y’all!

@Dan Morrison thanks for showing us al these little tricks and treats. Sure makes one feel like being part of something that has more value then just buying a mass produced, soulless object. It is clear these devices come with a soul included...

Also love how you keep trying and changing things, giving the Nomad life and growth. I still think he is in his very early years, and needs you to help him discover who he really is:)

It all feels very organic to me, something I really like.
The Nomad is a “he”?...

I've edited your spoiler to display the embedded images. imgbb links do work just fine, you just need to use the correct url which is always the "direct link" typically ending in .jpg or .png when using the image insert tool.

Thanks Stu!
It's weird, I opened the images in their own tabs (chrome) and copied the url's, which has worked ok in the past.
Something screwy with my browser methinks?
Liking posts is VERY hit and miss.
For instance, the last few pages have been chock full of posts I tried to 'like', but they just revert to like, instead of offering 'unlike'.
Yet I have been able to like SOME posts fine (your's just worked ok for instance).
I've tried restarting my phone, and clearing all my cookies, to no avail.
One day I'll try another browser, but I admit I'm resistant to change.
I'm used to Chrome

EDIT:
Another example, I just tried to like @pxl_jockey comment (and all the others above!) But it just won't take, snaps back immediately.
Does it show up as liked in your alerts pxl?

@Copacetic nope, you don’t “like” me. That’s a strange situation for sure, hopefully someone can help or has experienced the same. I’m either on my mobile/tablet on FC and have seen weird things but not that.

After sending a DM to DM yesterday, I honestly didn’t expect to hear back until later this week. So I was pretty surprised when he confirmed the same day, on a Sunday no less! More than surprised really, somewhere between shocked and impressed. First line: “Welcome to the other side!”

Going back to re-read the first batch production onward here and the thread in the lounge, all that material should give me plenty of choices to obsess over. I’m so thankful for everyone’s pictures in both threads, so much eye candy!

Weird, that one worked first time :hmm:
Oh well :shrug::lol:

I look forward to seeing which woods Dan has available for you, what options you choose, what sleeve you go for etc etc.
There's some fun decisions ahead

I can't welcome you to the Nomad club (until I actually receive mine!) But I can welcome you to the waiting club!

@Copacetic beautiful for sure. How you gonna pull and push that sleeve off and on :hmm: Looks like the openings are right where I grip mine.
Thanks :)
Sleeve removal shouldn't be a problem, I'll just grip it below the 'windows', plenty of real-estate there.

It's reached the UK now  :uhoh:
I need a biting my nails emoji.

I'm just happy that I'm one of these stunners!

They do look damn cool already
And is that a couple of olive wood bodies at the right/middle @Dan Morrison ?

My Milaana needs it's broken glass joint replaced. Is it as easy as pulling out and replacing the glass joint? The glass just sits right above the heater, correct?

With the Nomad, the steel heater tube does not replace the glass joint, as in your stem does not enter the steel tubing at all. Just comes to rest right above the heater, like the Milaana does, just without the glass between. Your question is kinda like asking if the mesh heater of the Milaana imparts a metallic taste, which neither unit does. Two of my all-time favorites.

To change the glass you have to pop the bottom piece off. (It's weakly glued). Heater mesh is just uder the screens in glass.
Unsolder the heater mesh wires so it doesn't get messed up when pulling out
the glass joint in pieces. You can get the joints at MG or wherever. Cut to right size with dremel and diamond disk or whatever you need to cut it down. When you pull out the glass push on the heater mesh wires so it comes out with the glass. Reverse to put together. I used carpenter flue to hold the glass. It will be easier to remove if needed. Just use a wood mouthpiece after that..PM me if you need to.

Lol, I thought about that too. It's not exactly the same question. It's a bit different with a heater mesh which goes hot surrounded by glass compared to a heater surrounded with ss. It's a good design idea but thought I would ask since I'm a little sensitive. ymmv
