I look forward to your findings! Interestingly, your description of concentrate use is the same performance I feel I'm getting at 580f! I wonder if your dabs are that much larger than mine, or some other difference accounts for this. Interesting.

Open question, is there a SiC ball seller that has been used by forum members that ISNT an ebay seller?

I ordered them at 81 cents a piece on DHgate.

Alright. Next question, now that I've been using the WE...a LOT.....

How often are you cleaning the screen? Or, how long does it take for it to become noticeably clogged? And, how are you cleaning it?

For me, I find I want to clean the screen after about 4 or 5 full (fluffy, not tamped) bowls have been run through it. My normal technique for glass of shaking with 99% ISO and salt doesn't seem to work as well for getting gritty bits of flower out of the bucket/screen. I'm now in the habit of leaving the whole shovelhead (bowl, 14mm post, screen, handle) overnight in just enough ISO to cover the screen, then just rinsing it in the AM is sufficient.

But I do wonder if I could go longer without clogging if I used a small stiff brush instead of my wee metal scoop to debowl it. I wanna shoot a blast of high powered air through it after each bowl -- that would be ideal, but an air compressor as a Weedeater bowl cleaner might be a bit over the top.

ALSO, at what point do you consider it done? At the first hint of toastyness or just past that? There's a point where it starts to taste a little burnt but before any overt combustion is happening. In my setup that's about 5 big draws.

I've been considering how to make this more "heady" -- considering some fumed art glass in the form of both a handle and/or the safety stand. Think a heavy blown glass paperweight with the safety stand sticking out of the top.

I rarely clean my bowls and double weave screens, like every 6 months? I am alternating two bowls, only have it going in the evenings and always debowl/brush clean when warm.

Almost there...
Been having some low temp experiments tonight!
Dropped it from my usual 335 Celsius to 320 Celsius.
Loaded 0,05g into my EQ elb bowl, attached SH and then placed carb cap on.
Fast inhale for the whole bowl and the milk is insane!
Light brown ABV with great taste, amazing effects and all at a lower temp!

This can be dangerous for during the week use...LOL!!

De-bowling/brushing will help a lot, ESPECIALLY when the head is still warm. That is really the key. You don't want to let flower sit on the screen and cool down, or it really sticks in. If you violently mash flower into the screen with some tool to break it up or spread it, you will also get it stuck in the screen.

Honestly, I use the double weave and hit it with a torch every 2-3 days. I make it glow and then run it under water. I understand ISO would be way easier on the screen, but I used the same one for 4-5 months with this method, and could honestly use it more but switched it out. The ISO method is a bit more work, and I like doing it more often than once a week. I mean I've tried ISO, and still had lots of plant matter in the double weave.

I find that there is quite a large difference in a clean VS even slightly dirty screen. Clean screen really rips, and a dirty screen can make you bust a lung.

I tried an infrared thermometer on my vrod sic dish. With 700 on the controller, highest readings i was getting were 585-590... really up close on this certain angle only.

Getting ready for dab number two with my rotating quartz and sic pearls.

These sic pearls are pretty looking...don't want to damage them! Normally with the quartz ones I've been dumping into a small iso pool after each dab. They've survived three weeks so far (12 total, rotating 4 at a time). But I'm thinking now with the sic, I'll dump them in one of those soft rubber silicone containers, and then after they cool a bit they go into iso pool.

Cheers!

whats best way to keep coil life longer?

i typically turn it on, set it to 700-750, take like 5 puffs, turn it off, sometimes using it up to 20 mins going through multiple bowls

One thing you don't want to do with it is turn it on and off multiple times a day. I leave mine on all day and it goes off when I go to sleep. Adds a little bit to the power bill, but I'm not buying butane and lighters, so it all evens out somewhat.

I believe Edwyn said he leaves his on as well. These devices are built to stand the heat. They aren't built to take the stress of constantly being heated and cooled, I believe.

Also remember they can go up to a few thousand degrees usually. We are babying these things at our temp ranges.

I thought that quartz was more susceptible to thermal shock issues than SiC?

I think the controller is more likely to be a concern than the coil, and both should last a long time. I used the same coil for over a year (on 12-24 hours a day) and it still works fine.

When I started traveling with it more I think something got knocked loose inside the controller and it had to be repaired, but no coil issues still.

If anything I would expect turning it on and off all the time might be less good for it, but I wouldn’t be too concerned about it. I’d just turn it on and off when you want to (off when you leave home at least, just to be safe).

You're probably right. I'm mainly starting to take greater care because the sic pearls i got are more expensive than the quartz.

So I'm changing the cleaning process slightly since i exchange them after every dab. I've got a bunch of those silicone dab containers that many places give away with orders. They're softer than the little glass ones I've been using, to cushion the fall at least when i dump them in. So one container holding all clean pearls, one to dump hot used ones into, and then another filed with iso to dump the used ones in a after they cool down a little.

Regarding controller and coil, when I'm home and awake it's on. Been like that for over a year and a half.

So letting auber 300 auto shutoff is okay too ?

When do you know ur coil is "done"

Yes, that’s fine, and you can set the timer to a longer or shorter period if you want to.

I don’t think we’ve had many (any?) reports of coil failures here, but my guess would be you know it’s done when it won’t heat up anymore since that’s its only job. ;)

I've read of people breaking SiC dishes, but I dropped mine from a decent height and it's fine. My SiC balls have also been dropped once from pretty high and are fine.

I've always understood that SiC isn't that brittle. Some searching seems to agree. It's not very brittle, and is very hard. What would "fake" SiC products be made from? You can buy SiC bearings instead of terp pearls, same thing. If they use them as bearings, I imagine they can take a little beating.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittleness

"The least brittle structural ceramics are silicon carbide (mainly by virtue of its high strength) and transformation-toughened zirconia."

I also don't find cleaning balls after each dab to really do anything. If you q-tip well enough, the large majority of it comes off. Seems like a ton of work for not that much payoff.

My house is a mess, but my SiC dish is pristine! My first SiC dish got a little crusty in the edges, when I was just so-so cleaning it. To get it really clean again I had to take the head apart and soak it for a bit and scrape it clean. So now I like to make it totally clean after I dab and it takes both sides of one qtip. If I leave the pearls in there, it takes 2 full qtips...and the pearls are still a little sticky. Not too big of a deal, and if my going to do back-back dabs I'll leave them. But I've been mostly switching back and forth between dabbing and vaping flower, and having 12 each of quartz and sic now makes it easy. I just keep shuffling them.

Nice to know the sic are strong. Taking a closer look at my quartz ones last night, I'm starting to see some battle scars!

I don't recall seeing instructions for the Auber when I reboxed. If I did, it's misplaced. Went to auber's site & downloaded both instruction pifs, but no instructions within. :doh:Googled, nothing. Searched this thread, nothing. NV site, nothing.

Found these instructions on auber thread, but want to confim if 6 times is really 6 times & not seconds as I don't want to fuck up the controller. So please tell me how to enable timered shut off, simply. Thanks!

"- hold knob down for 8 second or till screen changes
-adjust bottom number to 166
-press knob down 6 time till the top says ATO and you see the bottom number in minutes
-once selected time press knob to set time and it will put you back to normal screen

be aware the adjustment screen only stay up for about 5 seconds then automatically goes back tonormal temp screen for safety iguess but make sure you press the knob to set the number and it saves it"

Summer - see page 2 of the supplementary manual on how to access ATO and change the auto-shut off timer.

http://auberins.com/images/Manual/RDK-300_supplementary.pdf

And yes, once in the Temp Control Parameters (i.e. code 166) then yes, pressing down six times will cycle through the various parameters accessible from this code and get you to ATO.

On the top left of page two is a nice diagram showing this.

Thanks, Baron. I set the timer for 150 min. or 2-1/2 hours (duh ). Just waiting to see if it works.

Does lowering the controller's heat after the 1st session (like keeping it in simmering mode, if you will), have any detrimental effects on lowering coil longevity like there is when repeatedly turning on & off? I was thinking about reducing it from 575° to somewhere between 250° down to maybe 125° in between sessions - if there are any other sessions that evening. After 2-1/2 hours it will auto shut off.
