Can any one help a brother out with the switch assembly/ disassembly guidance tutorial? I am having misfires, (poor me) and I would like to assure the switch face surfaces are not tarnished causing my less than stellar performance. I understand how it comes apart, the difficulty begins upon re-assembly.
Thanks for any responses, Happy Easter!

Planet of the Vapes just released the "One" along with newly designed dosing capsules that happen to work very well with the standard glass stem for the Nomad. The perforations are identical on both ends, so you can just flip the capsule if needed to get everything even. There's a tiny tiny bit of space around it when inserted into the stem, so the original screen is needed as a backstop, but I imagine a firm o-ring might provide a better seal around the edges. However, I've vaped a couple of bowls and there doesn't seem to be any problem with air going around the capsule. I got lots of vapor and even ABV without flipping.

These capsules are stainless steel and very sturdy. I highly recommend them.

Magnet or Spring button @abracadaver ?
The toughest part about putting it back together with the spring ime, is the Allen screw. It's kind of a blind shot with my hand blocking the view of the screw hole. I know nothing about the magnet button. Dan said he would get to a tutorial about those.
My Nomad has traveled everywhere with me, even more since getting the Blackwood stem from @Ed's TnT . Have a Padauk wood stem coming from @Alan for quick exchange on the go.
I like to think of Dan's original vision of the Nomad being carried in ones blaster belt.
Here he is getting sand blasted with me on St Pete Beach.

@SloJimFizz I have the magnets in my switch. By the intermittent function, I would say that there has been a small problem since the beginning. Now that I have the switch apart, there is no way I am getting this unit back to function without some guidance from Dan. The contacts of the switch showed zero patina, or tarnish. I believe that the wonky function is due to an incomplete contact of the opposing magnet "poles". If I press the button very firmly, focusing on centering the "press" I can tell right away if the coil is heating. As of late, there has been more "not firing" than "firing". Additionally, I can hold the high temp coil button all day and never combust. The low temp coil serves zero purpose for me as it just will not throw heat into the load to the point of vaporization. I am quite willing to blame my less than stellar performance on user error.

So many posts to catch up on, I'll reply to everyone in the morning!

Just wanted to quickly get @abracadaver set up before I hit the hay.

First, follow this tutorial: https://imgur.com/a/nK2vuDx

That will get you most of the way with cleaning the button internals.

You mentioned, "I believe that the wonky function is due to an incomplete contact of the opposing magnet "poles". The magnets shouldn't ever touch. The magnets themselves don't form any part of the circuit. So no worries there.

Your issue does sound like the button isn't making good contact. Even if the bronze surfaces look perfect, I would still give them a clean as per the instruction manual linked above. The "tarnish" of bronze is pretty much invisible.

There could be a little spec of dust or debri in there.

I would also clean the bronze bottom plate around the heater module hole, the heater module shells where they make contact with the bronze, and the screw that goes into the bottom of the button. Might as well clean the connector bridge contacts, but this part is unlikely to be the culprit.

The bronze bottom plate is best cleaned with a pencil eraser as per the tutorial, the heater module shells can be cleaned the same way, or with the grey abrasive pad.

For re-assembly of the button, here is how to put the magnets back into place: https://imgur.com/a/zQVRoWY

It's a little bit confusing, I know. So please feel free to ask for clarification. I couldn't quite figure out how to photograph it well, maybe I'll have to make a video.

One thing that comes to mind is that maybe your button parts are somehow out of spec, here's something you can check.

Remove the brass button completely, as well as both magnets the black ring, and the black cup.

Clean these parts on some paper towel, clean the inside of the back of the brass button, where the magnet is installed.

Put magnet #1 into the black cup, and put magnet #2 into the black ring. Stick em' all together.

Now insert these four parts into the rear of the brass button. When the magnets and insulators are pushed fully down into the hole, the outside ring of brass (the part that makes electrical contact with the bronze back plate) should be just above the insulator/magnets.

If the insulator/magnet is flush with the contact ring at the back of the brass button, then we have a manufacturing defect that is at fault.

Finally, I have a way for you to test your heater modules to know if they are outputting the correct power. In a dim/dark room, insert a fresh battery around 4.2v and the Low heat module. Remove the glass stem and look down the airway hole directly at the heater coil.

Press the button and count how many seconds go by before the coil just starts to glow a dull red. The low heater module should reach that point in under 15 seconds. If it doesn't, something is wrong.

Let me know how that goes and we can go from there!

If it's all too much trouble, we can just send it on back here and I'll go over it and test it to make sure it's in tip top shape, certainly sounds like something is amiss with your unit.

I tried a fury 2 capsule but find I don't have the patience. The extra ss simply requires more time / cell power to get to temp. I can't get anything better than a whispy hit when using capsules (that goes with the fury 2 too). I guess multi accessory vaping isn't my thing. I can't even get with the wood ring. I'm back to the single screen set up.

I don't think the F2 capsules will work, they had quite a gap between the lid and inner glass wall. I have some PotV One capsules on the way.

I have no issues with the wooden ring though...... That feels a little easier to me. High heater, 2-3 second preheat, slow draw, what do you get with the wood ring like that?

I went single screen for a bit to get a larger load, it made walking the line more difficult imo.

Nice hits with the ring, no doubt. Although I find that the load is not quite as quick to temp as it is without the ring. My inexpert opinion is simply that the added mass of the ring requires more energy for the entire system to reach temp. But it's not really a few more seconds on the button here or there that makes me not gravitate toward the ring or a capsule. It's that changing loads with rings and capsules gets more involved. I guess I'm lazy in that regard. The fewer steps the better. The most efficient vaping technique I've come across goes like: pinch herb, place into stem, vape. Expel abv from stem. Repeat. The Nomad can handle this technique quite well.

I'm sorry, Dan but when I was reading your description of the Okin, with the exclusion of materials, I was laughing as the description fit the Ghost MV-1 to a "T". :lmao:I'm intrigued.

Do you think you could start a thread for the Okin in either the DIY or unreleased portable forum so we could follow along there?

First FC post!

After drooling over Dan's ig for a few months I've added myself to the wait list last week. Now that I've read (almost) the entire thread I thought I'd say hi here.

@lieutenantlemons Can I ask you what the second sleeve cost you? And how did you decide on the custom collar?

Also very interested in a wpa, any news on that front beside Ed's?

Welcome @SouthWestSensi !
Either @Ed's TnT or @Alan can make you a wpa. I think @duff had success using the original glass stem into a 14mm bubbler. I have two wpa for my Epicvape Nano, one slides into the Nomad perfectly, and the other is too big to fit. So I can't recommend ordering one from Epic in hopes it fits. But if you have a Nano and some gongs already, wouldn't hurt to check. I will have to revisit the bubbler experience with the Nomad as I didn't have my technique fully down when I tried it. But I'm also more of a flavor guy and the bubbler usually taints it for coolness with most vapes I have and I usually prefer going from stem straight to my vape hole.

New stem to match my collar from @Alan has been kicking ass. I haven't used a glass one since getting my Blackwood stem from Ed, now having two wooden stems is perfect for me. Alan said he had a piece of Padauk that might go well.
Perfect imo:

Wear & Tear update 10 months in on #001
Bottom corners have some scuffing going on from traveling in cargo pockets and going in and out of its soft travel case. Some discoloration in the gold where the hand holds it most. Breaking in nicely like a guitar that gets played a lot.
Dan's final finish has changed since, so ymmv and I have not babied it since the third month in.

Welcome!
The second sleeve was an extra $100. It's a bit steep but I thought it was well worth it for what I consider to be a bit of an art piece.

As for the custom collar, me and Dan essentially threw ideas back and forth until we settled on that collar specifically. I knew from the beginning that I wanted something custom done to fit my overall theme and my initial inspiration was actually the green bamboo Okin pictured here:
http://imgur.com/gallery/aJcbS
I asked Dan if it was possible to use some of that same bamboo for the stem collar, but he said it wouldn't be possible to machine in the way needed for the collar. He offered to try and mimic the bamboo look by carving and and dyeing a different wood, but I believe in the end we both agreed that it would likely look a bit tacky. After some back and forth Dan sent over this sketch of some possible ideas and I eventually narrowed it down.

I actually have a mockup of my Nomad with the collar in the middle column, 5th row if anyone is interested :)

@Mr. Me2 Thanks!

@SloJimFizz Idk about Alan, does he have a website? The one in his profile seems to be pretty old. And yeah I saw the pictures, really hope it'll fit on my 14mm piece like that but I prefer the solidness of a real adapter. Maybe Gturn or Andycapp could take a request too, Ed made his without a Nomad in hand too right?
Wear on your sleeve looks pretty good!

@lieutenantlemons Damn, 100 is indeed a bit steep but expected as much. I do like your designs the most, so far only a mock up, right?

MAN THAT OKIN LOOKS GOOD! Never saw it before, really pretty. I can see why you were inspired.

Good to see those sketches and nice to hear about the process, thank you. If you would like to post the mockup with the other collar then please do!

I honestly thought about a mushroom inspired design before I saw yours! Especially when I saw the plain/red sleeve design with the mushroom and the moonrunes he made a while back. Never thought to incorporate the entire device tho, you took it to another level.

@Bdubbdiblets Very pretty! Wonder how the paint will age

Just absolutely loving the Nomad # 036. Smooth tasty creamy honey-taste hits. If you have a high heater you just give a little bit button, then a little bit breath... you find yourself in the 1st class sleeper car on the orient-express straight to flavor town. I am blown away. Dan is some kind of special genius. Has to be. Btw I push a little down while pushing in on the magnetic button. Plus I lightly brush the batt. ends and contact areas on unit and heater with included scrubby stick every now and again . No dry fires at all any more, plus you don't need to super tight your battery bridge. With my new and ongoing learnin, now she fires up solid all the time. What a great vaporizer. Also, i been stirring once halfway thru the bowl, somehow pleasant and easy to stir with Nomad. Part of the ritual? Fo sho. Put some great material through an excellent vape! Thanks again Dan! Cheers to all! D.:clap:

I appreciate the kind words :) and yes it's currently just a mockup, but I'm in the current batch so I should be getting mine in the coming months.

Dan is very easy to work with, so I'm sure you'll end up with your dream Nomad! The design of mine came out better than I could have ever imagined, so I'm sure you'll be extremely happy once your turn comes around, and I hope to see many pics once that time comes :)

And I know exactly which Nomad you're talking about, that's definitely one of my favorites!
Here is that other collar btw:

Loving this thing, super flavorful. Def has a curve but oh man has it been fun testing! The sleeve and burl are unreal...sorry for poor quality pics...

i been stirring once halfway thru the bowl, somehow pleasant and easy to stir with Nomad.

I've gotten to the point of using just a small amount of material atop a single inverted screen ('cup' or 'bowl' style) pushed into the top of the stem, close to the heater. I get two or three impeccable hits and don't bother stirring, just dump and reload. If I put a larger amount in I end up stirring after a couple of hits. Not a hassle. And the flavor is still rich following a stir, which is something I haven't found with other vapes.

My Nomad has been my primary vape since I've had it, going on a couple of months now I guess. Part of that is due to spending time at the beginning figuring out my preferred set up. Since then it's because it's so pocketable and reaches temp pretty darn quickly. I used it at vape break during a concert a couple of weeks ago, on the sidewalk outside the venue, chatting with my buddy who didn't even notice that I had taken a hit during our convesrsation.

Finally figured out what to do about a cap for my stem. Being that my Nomad spends a lot of time in my pocket, crap can get into the stem, especially if it's a little sticky in there. And the stem can gather a noticeable bouquet between cleanings. So I clipped a foam ear plug to a convenient size and place it into the top of the stem to keep it clean and control odor.

I'm getting desperate to see my Nomad.
I know Dan's always :buzz: ing busy behind the scenes, but I still get very jealous every time someone posts about their Nomad!
Can't help myself :whip:
It's my own fault though for inspiring Dan's current epic quest down the sleeve rabbit-hole.
He clearly won't settle for less than 'stellar' judging by everything I've seen so far (wish I'd got an Okin back in the day).

Are there any other batch 2 custom sleeve customers still waiting with me?

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”

The Nomad is where this famous quote from William Morris collides head on with my VAS.

“If it’s worth having it’s worth waiting for” is another quote (Oscar Wilde) that I often tell my kids. I know it’s going to be a long wait but I’m definitely going to enjoy spending the time looking at the Nomads of those that have gone before me and contemplating my preferred choices.

Thank you @Dan Morrison for creating this work of art.

The Nomad is a work of art- to gaze at and operate, and once you understand how to use it for yourself, it will put you on your ass. Unreal total convection on demand hits. You can dial in what kind of hits you want by your button and breath technique. I love this vaporizer, very very very 'worth the wait'. I spent a lot on this puppy, for my budget anyway. Worth every penny. No shit. Cheers!! D.:)
