Sapphire and Ruby inserts for bangers

The polish being super well done isn’t important per se, but I find that they need to be heat cleaned a lot less frequently if it is well done.
That means its important (at least to me :) )

And you also have to worry about the walls and base being uneven. This, along with heating your nail in one space, is the biggest reason ruby inserts crack while being heated up. This is how my insert is from the first round of GG rubies, and it cracked soon after my first use, if not my first use.

Been torching my Constant Prestige insert in one spot since December.

Solo canotto!
Blazer big shot and the Blazer 2001. My constant ruby cracked a bit at day one.
I believe it is better to soak it in DCC over night. Heat cleaning will crack the rubies imo.
Maybe it is possible but not for me. Tried to be super even constant but that gem cracked.
Doesn't matter to me, only a cosmetic thing but if you want to torch it without a crack it is better
to do it with something like the 2001. More control here. The big shot is really fire, so maybe to hard
to control. I love my ruby but they are a bit fragile. Most people babied their rubies but got cracks like
me. At that price I ask myself if its worth the investment...the adapt tech ones are really awesome but
how will you feel if your 500+ ruby show a crack at day one after trying to be a gentle one?
But ruby is still my choice.
Happy easter to you all!

@biohacker I finally checked the temp at my sidewalls vs. the floor on my ruby insert when heated by a 25mm opaque bottom banger and axial coil. I get a temp on the floor of 455F and the walls are only about 425F at the top. So the floor is hotter when using an axial coil as far as I can tell.

What is the temp on your controller set at when you're getting these readings? Just curious.

That would make sense based on the contact wth the floor but gap on the walls?

It is what I anticipated, however I thought somewhere back you asked after someone (possibly shooby) mentioned the temp was higher at the top of their banger walls. Maybe I lost something in translation.

Yeah Shooby had like a 100f difference between the top and bottom/bottom edge, but was using a different controller. He's recently used a k-type probe and IR, and has been doing more testing. I'm sure when time permits he will come share his findings. :D

I received a 30mm SiC insert from Fadespace today.

Wow, super nice! I know this is a ruby/sapphire thread but I think this is the first offering of this size insert in this material...it’s really nice and should be tank tough. Great flavor and clouds at low temps.

Also, I use axial coils and I measure in the ‘corner’ to try to get an averaged temp of the wall and floor.

That Sic insert looks pretty nice. I saw a video of someone using it. Have a Dnail Sic halo and happen to like it allot. I'm keeping my eyes on this 1. May have to grab it only for the pure fact that my Dnail Sic halo has been used for 2 yrs now and it still looks brand new with proper cleaning and provides great taste at low temps. Hmmm... *** Edit : Couldn't hold back , I just ordered 1 w/20% off .

Has anyone ordered the 30mm bangers from NoisyBeeGlass with the 3.5mm walls?

I think his 3.5mm are 3mm and his 3mm are 2.5mm. He has the half opaque banger just like greekglass. I have the greekglass one and it is 2.5mm walls and noisybee has it listed and as 3mm thick.

EDIT: Nevermind greekglass are also 3mm.

The 30mm are 3mm but theres a option to get 3.5mm walls instead. Seems like the company maybe in china? I emailed CS and got email in the middle of the night from someone with a chinese name. I asked when my order was gonna be shipped and they said "As the 3.5mm thick banger is customized, we need about one week to produce, tracking number will be updated when shipped out."

Ahh cool. I was about to update my post again. It'd be nice if sellers would have proper photos of their products. Makes life so much simpler. Time consuming task but not bad when it's done and you're just adding new products.

I hope they come out with a half opaque 30mm. It's a very enjoyable banger, but like a bigger one.

I don't use an insert with it, but I did when I first got it with my FadeSpace SiC insert since I didn't have another banger to use it in properly. Really like the GG bangers 3mm 25mm for the insert because there is very little play. I'm hoping the same will be said for the 30mm SiC when it comes out since I have a thick wall 30mm as well. Friend was kind enough to buy me a 30mm Axial from Shane so I had to grab one. :)

I've used it with two methods. A 25mm barrel coil and cold starts loaded. Both are fantastic. The opaque really does a great job with the cold start method. I don't have a 25mm direct comparison, but feel like get more flavor than my 30mm opaque bottom.

I know a lot of people hate FadeSpace and I'm not going to blame them at all, but he's always been good to me. Dislike is certainly justified for some though. I don't use IG much so I don't have to be bothered by their antics.

I've wanted to get quartz from other places but my favorite piece of glass (Mango710 recycler) has never had a banger that fits it properly except when I cut the bottom part of a joint off to make it fit. Thankfully with literally all of GG's quartz, they all fit without any issue. I've bought a lot of quartz of the years and literally have never had one that fit properly besides the one I cut. No worries about accidentally pulling the nail or it spinning while hitting it.

Just to bring it back on topic... jury is still out for me on gems as inserts. I enjoy my spheres, both ruby and sapphire, but have already thermally shocked one sphere in iso quench. I knew beforehand not to, was just a test to see how long it would take to happen. I'm very happy with SiC and Opaque quartz as mediums, but definitely still interested in specifically the ruby insert. Just not a fan of their characteristic to thermally shock. Seems more like a question of when more than a question of if. At some point I will pick up one from GG or whoever has the best price/CS experience at the time of purchase.

One tthing about fadespace is that he seems to have good customer service and his products do seem good.

I really like my ruby and sapphire inserts, I do go back to my obsidian insert (SiC basically) once in awhile and like it but always go back to a gem. I am interested in Fadespaces new aluminum nitride insert and tbh will probably end up getting it but im curious what other people think of it? I havent been using spheres much lately but i recently seen that fadespace is offereing diamond spheres and diamond coated SiC spheres for custom special order at a crazy price, oooo diamond, Im a sucker for new shiney things :( but my wallet cant take that hit right now

Someone needs to TOFTT and snag a sapphire or ruby DropTech dish insert from AdaptTech on 4/20!!!

Shooooooooobbbyyyyy!!!! :D

I dunno, it might be the closest thing to a "game changer" out there I think. But maybe not, hard to know who to believe anymore with all the hype and fuckery out there these days.

Let us know :D I don't trust anybodies palette who doesn't like gem dabs!
I'm thinking if the higher conductivity of SiC wasn't enough to sell me over sapphire, I'm not really convinced by an even larger number.

The proof will be definitely in the dabbin'

Speaking of proof... Any proof for his improved decarboxylation claims? They claim to be really science minded but I only ever see generic thermodynamics comparisons. I'd definitely be interested in seeing some of that real science.

So, I don’t pay much attention to social media and can’t comment on Fadespace’s behavior there but my preorder shipped within a few days of when it was supposed to. On top of that, the product was fairly priced and is really nicely made.

That’s pretty good for this industry...

I had my first gemstone break on me yesterday. I left it in my portable setup which the TC works sometimes more like a throttle regulator and not so much of a top speed governor so it increases temp very slowly but keeps increasing. I will admit that due to it being 420 I was throwing globs down and getting caught up in the moment which led to a silence which was broken by a snap. A quiet but bone-slicing snap, one that makes your stomach turn and takes your breath. I knew instantly what had happened. I was now a victim of thermal shock and my life would never be the same. Never again would I be able to just carelessly and rapidly heat my precious Ruby insert without a back up for my back up. Never again could I heat up a preciois gemstone without complete awareness of time space and duration of its existence in the temporal banger heat continuum.

It snapped clear in half. There's no saving this one! There won't be a funeral percession, however we are accepting dab toasts in spirit as an offering for our lost loved one.
