Gear Slug .33 Rosin Forge

@ClearBlueLou so true. It may taste good when burnt for smoke lovers, but the effects are just not there enough. The prize most often stays high though, lol. Still the best you can do with it is trying to extract what is left somehow. Or vape it in a vaporiser with big chamber.
This particular weed was not tumbled i think but a nicely outdoor grown, barely trimmed weak sativa variety, with a nice mellow effect when forged. Just very low resin content. It also required the big Plenty chamber for getting a correct effect when vaporised.

@Gonzo_Dabs thank you for the welcome!

Slug.33: Another nice possibility for producing an occasional dab when needed!

For regular dabbing I would try temp regulated plates and a press.

What's funny is, the second gram I pressed last night didn't squeeze out jack shit. It was a different strain of flower than the first press in the image above.
I even broke up the puck and added a bit more, bringing the weight up to about 1.2, and it didn't blow out. Just produced a rock-solid puck that produced no rosin.
Funny, that particular second strain vapes just fine (it's not particularly weak or anything). It is what it is, I guess.

In my trials it never worked to repress a puck if the first press did not yield. You can still vape or extract them with a solvent or cook with them.

It probably has been said by @Nattybushdoctor and others already..

What sometimes helped if nothing came out, was to just heat the slug33 some more and wait until it start to flow. The rosin gets a bit darker like that, but better than nothing.

Weight is crucial. In my case loading 1 gram. 1 gram of leaves does not behave like 1 gram of trimmed flower or stems. If I got more blowouts i tried to reduce weight, if no yield tried to increase weight.

Humidity is important. Bone dry weed does not work good. Too humid and the dab sizzles because of the water in it. You can let dry too humid rosin.

Sometimes it was good to press the last 2-4mm very fast. I had less blowouts like that with that weed.

It does not work with one gram of standard black hash. The hash just blew out, as could be expected. But I had to try. Maybe for hash you should load less than 1 gram or put a screen somehow. Smelled the same after the process as before. (Sidenote: Also smelled the same as in the last century)

I’ve broken up and repressed pucks in the past that I’d made a mistake on in the first press and gotten 10% or more returns. Still better than nothing.

That’s what I’ve done in the past for low-producers, but it didn’t work this time.

That is good to know. So I maybe missed the second press too or it was my low yield weed causing it.

I can't guarantee that it will always work, but it has sometimes for me after a blowout...so, it might be worth a shot
If it doesn't work the second press you can still use it the other aforementioned ways.

If you want to use hash in the slug u can either use 0.1 to 0.3 hash and the rest flower to get a vapeable outcome or 0.5 to 0.7 hash with some flower loaded first to get a huge drip that is not the cleanest extract but still has some uses. I have gotten drips 0.4g from the 1gram slug using this method although I prefer adding just a small amount of hash to mid grade flower to boost the results... Keep in mind that the smell of hash tends to overpower that of flower and also load the hash closer to the end of filling the slug such that the flower acts a filter for the runny hash

Hey, Doc! I was just watching your latest vid, says you used 3.6g: in your ur experience, is it better to go a touch over than a touch under? When faced with and over or under situation, I’ve always gone for under.

Always looking for refinement!

Hey, gang - been a minute....

Did you crumble up your hash first?

No, I rolled a bar that fit the hole, why?
Just brainstorming about why your hash blew out...I would try AllTimeNewHigh’s suggestion about a base layer of flower, then the hash. I have no hash to experiment on, but I suspect that your freshly-softened hash roll may be why you had the blowout.

Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate.
Yes very well possible.
I like @Alltimenewhigh 's suggestion, but am not in the position to try anytime soon I think. I also did not really appreciate the effects.
I almost think with a really good not so worked sample of traditional hash it could have worked fine.

@ClearBlueLou I prefer 3.5 with the fat mac. The puck seems to flair out to much with any more than that. @Sick Vape Its a sad situation when trying to run hash through your Slug.33. Good luck with your experiments. Let me know if you succeed!

AMBIENT TEMPS MATTER!! All of our testing and extractions are done inside at around 68 degrees fahrenheit. I spent the a bit of time trying to help a customer, finally we found out that he was doing the extraction in his garage and it was 30 degrees. Naturally this greatly effects the overall heat time. The answer for him was to pre heat his Slug.33 just enough so it was warm before loading it. Success is in the details!

Never heard of it but it’s a fascinating idea...looking forward to hearing more
In theory you could pack it cold and let it heat up knowing when it’s done with a temp gun or something and all the material would be heated evenly. Might have to get my hands on some

This would be where I mention that a temp gun won’t give you the response you need, due to the curved surface scattering the bounce-back (imo). I suppose a probe could’ve be included in the wrap, but that likely won’t give you the heat of the Slug, just the heat where the probe is.

It’s a pretty problem, always willing to hear new ideas to del with it

Imo, I feel like you wouldn't need any kind of temperature reading device, as the tape's temperature can be set and then you just kinda eyeball it lol

Yes, there many other options when it comes to electric heating methods. There is also something called heater rope and polyimide heaters and silicone strap heaters. I think it would be pretty cool to see.

The problem with the temp gun is the shiny surface along with the shape of the Slug makes it near impossible to get any type of reading as you know. To solve this problem wrap a piece of dark paper preferably black around the Slug, make sure its tight, you can get a pretty good reading that way. Try to avoid glossy paper if possible.

Hi together, I've got a slug on the way and am currently looking for a vise. I'd like it to be as small as possible, while still being high quality and robust. Could anyone give me the exact height of the slug.33 in combination with the stubby plate? Thanks in advance.

You need a 4” vice at least. I recommend this one WEN 434TV 4.25-Inch Industrial Strength Benchtop and Drill Press Tilting Angle Vise https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DB32SBN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MHtCCbY993RMW
