I base "melt" on how the material reacts under heat.........as in does it melt like beeswax..

I'm more familiar with evaluating the melt based on how much residue it leaves behind on the nail.

I use high quality indoor as well and many of my favorite strains are lucky to yield 15% with rosin or solvent extracts. I would only hit full melt sift ever if I was getting 15%. :D

Are you basing those numbers off nugs? Whole plant? Whats your sift setup/process look like? I've been wanting to get into cryo-sifting. :science:

I don't grow, sift or otherwise make concentrates and have no special knowledge. But, I don't think anyone's numbers are crazy.

Keep in mind that @arb is talking about dry sift, bubble hash utilizes all the advantages of a stacked sieve so its easier to separate full melt compared to dry sift, where those plant contaminants are much harder to separate without the water medium. An air jet sieve is the closest I could think of.

I use a 24" x24"frame with 120 Silk screen and hand process the material........essentially a gentle carding technique.
I use very dry material and only work it enough to get what I want and then I do a wash with the left over material.
No fan leaves or low quality plant matter but not whole buds just fluff.

As @invertedisdead has mentioned, 99% trichome heads has to be picked up using static. Then you simply bounce the broken down material lightly over a set of screens. You want a 120 over a 90 over a 50-70 micron set of screens. You can add a 25 at the bottom if you like as well. If you have the time, the technique is like this:

If you either rub the material with a card/hands/whatever against a screen, or some other similarly aggressive method of sifting you will get a lower quality sift with a fair amount of contaminant left behind. Doesn't mean you aren't making excellent hash if you are gently using one screen though... and if it melts on a nail, and tastes good to you, then who cares if it's not 99% heads? I mean, hell, if you are getting 15% meltable yield just from carding... must be some insane material!

I have been having this conversation on the web since 2001........and it never changes.

Back in the day, where I was, full melt meant nearly no residue, but not on a nail.
I am not used to amounts like Johnny B anymore. I should grow and grow and grow
What strains are you using @arb ?
Rosin is much easier, too?

Edit: sorry late precisions
