Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

Update on quitting cannabis due to CHS. I must say beyond any doubt this was the best course of action. Of course as most of us know that quitting cannabis is not that difficult especially if you have ever practiced t-breaks. For me quitting cannabis is one day and done, completely cold turkey with no issues at all.

All symptoms of CHS have ceased and I feel like a million dollars. If you suffer from severe CHS I highly recommend quitting with all my heart. Quitting is worth not suffering with CHS, period.

If you are on the fence about what to do get off the fence and just quit. It is not that hard.

I am still a fervent advocate for cannabis but over the years I arrived at a place where I can no longer partake. If you do not suffer from CHS enjoy the herb by all means. I have loved her almost my entire life.

Take care, and take care of yourselves FC friends.

:peace:

Maybe after a prolonged abstinence and you have purged your body of all stored canabiniods , maybe you will be able to enjoy cannabis again .

I keep thinking i want to stop for a month or more maybe 2 or 3 months to completly purge my body of any stored stuff . but after a day or so i always end up having a vape .

Now im not as sick as what you have described and maybe its not CHS . but i am always having GI issues and it would seem so simple to find out if they are caused by my years of canabis use .

All i would have to do to know for sure is to stop fro a while maybe 2 weeks and if i still have all my issues i guess i would know its not the cannabis .

Iooking at the dates of your last posts it looks like you are feeling much bettwr after about 10 days of not using ?

I think you have inspired me to give it a go again to abstain and find out for sure thank you steama and good luck to you

Due to dementia (ongoing , approaching and in the family) I use 5% of what I used to do even a year ago. It is the same amount it has ever been. All I want. It is just that I want so much less now days. I almost stopped on Dec 6th as it became legal here in Michigan but as I watch TV at night old friends like Udog, Zion and Nano call to me and I answer. To thine ownself be true.

I think this issue is way more complex than what is currently known and is probably the tip of the iceberg for problems that can and do arise from prolonged consumption in susceptible individuals.

I've had some negative respiratory reactions lately and today had those same reactions via edibles at a small dose. Technically it wasn't CHS but there was respiratory distress and oddly enough a left sided chest pain from a small dose of edibles? No vomiting or any of the other CHS symptoms but try searching for answers and there's little light on this topic anywhere on the net.

I have no idea what the cause is other than possibly too much THC built up in my system, possible heavy metal or pesticide/fungicide exposure, or just a negative effect from overdoing it and my age range (close to 50), GMO seeds/hybrids or whatever the cause is something is going on in this industry and there are some serious public health issues which being in a legal state there are dispensaries everywhere and no one knows much about the negative health effects of consumption and it is looking like total cessation of not only inhalations but now edibles is going to have to be my game plan as I don't like this negative side effects I experienced.

Reading the large amount of testimonies from those that went through CHS and vomiting and ER visits it really makes me wonder what the heck is happening and why?

I think part of it actually steps from vaporizing. When you combust, few cannabinoids survive the heat, every hit is a microdose. Even "big hits" would be pretty low in actives, comparatively, to even an entry level vaporizer in todays market.

It's pretty much like food at this point, if you didn't grow it yourself it's hard to trust anything, as everyone is out to maximize profits at all costs. Grown your own greens and make your own hash

It's possible these hybrid clone genetics are staying in the body longer as they lack the "lock and key" genetic structure of a seed grown plant. Could be due to incomplete cannabinoid profiles, some suspect lack of CBD, but not enough about cannabis and cannabinoids is really known yet IMO to truly do much but speculate.

I'm seriously wondering if Hybridization and modern chemicals used in growing is the main culprit as this phenomena seems to only have to come into existence in the last 15 years or so. And now if you do a simple google search and better yet a youtube search and read through the comments it is affecting people at an alarming rate in large enough numbers that I'm convinced whatever the culprit is....it's a BIG problem that will continue to grow.

I wondered from the get-go about seedless medicine and now everything is practically seedless and a quick walk through any cultivation grow store displays gallons upon gallons of new fertilizers and chemicals that growers can now use. Most likely toxic and probably highly toxic.

As pro MJ as I am I do try to view things like this as unbiased as possible and the lack of regard for public health is insulting as with most industries profits over people will most likely continue and eventually I predict lawsuits and further problems on the horizon for what I consider shady business practices.

Folks that work as trimmers and bud tenders are developing what appears to be an allergic reaction to handling the plant and some are at the point of having to use inhalers due to difficulty breathing.

I'm very concerned that something is rotting in Denmark and hopefully this topic will see the light of day sooner than later so this issue can get trimmed in the bud!

I'm thankful for intelligent forums like this where I've learned a ton of information on what is going and highly respect many of the posters that comment regularly here. My education has definitely grown immensely from the FC forums.

IMO it's because these modern cultivars are so inbred that their genetics are total garbage. People rave about a strain because it tastes good, and that's about all you get these days. I remember when people used to say, "it's a weed, it will grow ANYWHERE." That definitely doesn't seem to be the case with modern cannabis, most of it is so genetically weak it has practically zero resistance to anything. When you think about wild landrace cannabis, it's a total joke that these hybrid cultivars need $1000 worth of crap from the Hydroponics store to make it through a 60 day growing cycle!?!? These wild landrace sativa's will grow resin for 6 months in the sun without any human interaction or products applied whatsoever? Yet Girl Scout Cookies can't survive a run-in with a caterpillar?

Certainly experienced those reactive sensitivities when trimming, there are LOTS of particulate floating around when trimming which could be one factor, but I have to agree that just touching flowers; particularly fresh/during trimming, for me, can cause a reaction. That's why I largely believe in concentrates, even just old school kief/sift/hash - and removing most of that plant material before inhalation, as has been done for centuries.

Always appreciate your wisdom invertedisdead! Us old-school guys should always question where's the seeds?........This ain't Humboldt county 30 years ago..... unfortunately.....too much tech too many chemicals and quite frankly I'm shocked more people aren't questioning things like we do here?

I'm in Michigan and it's a wild freaking west out here with little oversight or regulation and the dispensaries can actually get away with selling anything......non lab tested, non verification of contaminants or mold.....I might go on a 10 year canna break til this gets sorted out.

Sad but true that legalization brings the hucksters, profiteers and jive AF types into what should be a transparent industry. I look at California and that state is an absolute mess as are the other ones. If the dispensary owners would oversee themselves and hold their growers to stringent guidelines it wouldn't be so bad but the greed is out of control and the lack of taking their responsibility for the public trust is appalling.

People are too busy being enamored with a cheap and easily accessible high. And most that see the writing on the wall probably gave it up or are growing their own. I live in an apartment and don't really have the option to, but it's becoming one of those things that you almost have to do to ensure any kind of clean product.

I know when it comes to fruit, most people have been taught to hate seeds, they view them as a bothersome inconvenience, not a free source for unlimited food we could be sharing like they really are. It sets the standard for cloned monocrops with weak genetics just like the herb. Look at all the talk about bananas going extinct now cause they are so weak. The pests kill off these weird cloned plants cause they aren't natural and aren't supposed to be here. The only way these plants can survive a crop is by modifying the world around the clone with over-engineered pesticides and insecticides which affect the DNA of multiple species; such an ass backwards, evil, crimes-against-humanity type way of attempting to understand nature.

We've got far more grey-area shops open in California than legal, very few of the products are being tested... that would cut into the profits! And even if it was tested, can these labs be trusted when they've been busted so many times already for nudging results? Too much money in canna, all ethics are out the window.

Ok I’m kinda a unique case but I’m starting to believe my illness is some form of Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome. Logically it doesn’t make sense but the only thing constant has been cannabis use.

I’m in chronic abdominal pain. Been in the hospital numerous times for vomiting, nausea and severe abdominal pain.

When I was in high school is when I first started smoking. I can’t remember if my first hospitalization came before or after my first cannabis use (which actually would be kind of helpful).

Then, I went away to college and I still was smoking. But now I got into heavy smoking everyday, gravity bongs and stuff like that. Since 2001/2002 I’ve been in chronic abdominal pain everyday. Numerous gastroenterologists, some say Crohn’s, some say IBS, etc.

Needless to say, most tests are inconclusive and everything seems normal according to the doctors. I’ve been through numerous GIs.

This last GI mentioned CHS, but I tell him I’m in pain everyday, why. He didn’t have an answer. But now, I’m thinking it may be cannabis the entire time. Now, with the advent of these concentrates, at one point, I had a ton. And I used it exclusively, and I got really sick. And had a hospital attack.

Fast forward to February of this year when I switched to Live Rosin exclusively. Now, I’m feeling worse, pain is worse, and dabbing doesn’t do anything some days. Some days I’m ok, some days I’m in pain.

Today, pain. Even though I took some dabs already.

I’m really having a hard time with this. If it is cannabis, I feel like I will have an existential crisis. A lot of my life revolved around cannabis as silly as that sounds. Sure, I have other stuff and hobbies and a family LOL. But I love cannabis. This is becoming hard for me to accept but I’m starting to accept it.

Now, if it’s not, and I’m still in pain after cessation then I’m fucked because that means I probably got CHS and have something else. LOL.

I’m trying to cut back. It’s very hard because previously when I’m in pain, I would smoke. But now, it seems To do nothing or even make it worse sometimes.

I definitely think I need to lay off the concentrates but I have a lot I just restocked LOL.

Stay away from concentrates for sure! They will exasperate and help cause CHS if that's what you have.
There's a few Facebook groups with people who suffer from CHS and your symptoms sound pretty familiar.
Even the first 6 months off weed you might have episodes but it does get better over time.

Seems heavy smoking, edibles and concentrates really is what gets people to the point of CHS...basically heavy consumption via any method. The condition is no joke and seeing the large numbers of people suffering with this has me doing a double take on cannabis altogether as this condition is rising dramatically and it def is the weed unfortunately....whether it's pesticides or too high THC who knows? but there is a big problem.

I hope you get over this and restore health as the only means that seems to work is complete abstinence as hard as that is to take!

How much are you vaping/dabbing per day?

How much are you vaping/dabbing per day?

Quite a bit

Vaping was between 1.4 - 2.0 grams a day.

Dabbing I’ve been wrecking 3-4 grams a week. I know, it’s crazy. But I wake up in pain, dab. Pain, dab. Wake up from the night, dab. Eat. Dab. Go to work. Lunch. Dab. Come home. Dab. Eat dinner. Dab. Maybe another dab. Dessert. Dab. Then maybe one more dab. ‘

I’ve only started getting into concentrates since like February so that’s relatively new. But now I’m exclusively using it.

Yeah trust, I know it’s a lot. I’ve been sick for 17 years or so. It would be fucked up if cannabis is causing my stomach pain all this time.

I hope you figure it out. I have vaped like a fiend to alleviate pain at times. It sucks being desperate and under pain's thumb.

CHS is a real problem but it may not always be weed related like you may think, weed may just actually be making other symptoms more aware to you but you just didn't notice before, try to increase water intake, increase sodium intake a bit, take some vitamins and change your diet a bit. Weed changes the bacteria in your gut, and depending on who you are, it can start causing you to eat like crap and you do it subconsciously without thinking, then after awhile, your body starts doing weird things. It can also cause you to not drink as much water, which you maybe not aware of, a lot of things happen on a subconscious level that you just don't think matter but really do

I had issues when I was dabbing oils, after awhile it just messed with my head and made my body feel "off", most likely due to bad purges (you can never get the chemicals out 100% no matter what they say)

The other problem with dabs is if you take huge dabs and cough a lot, it can over-stimulate your vagus nerve and cause a ton of problems that you think are caused by something else.

https://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/vagus-nerve#problems

When it comes to gut health, it's mostly diet / hydration related. Unfortunately though, some people just have a bad setup genetically.

I’ve never dabbed with solvent concentrates and still got sick. Since I stopped using 5 days ago, I’m feeling way better. It’s definitely cannabis related. I’m sorry you don’t feel that way, but there is plenty of science behind it.

And I almost never coughed from dabbing.

I encourage anyone to read this article.

I think you are on to something in regards to breeding changing the genetic profiles of these strains, and unbalancing the naturally occurring ratios found in land-race populations. The Cannabis growing community has focused so heavily on THC levels, that everything else often gets ignored. TBH, I feel like concentrates are a bit of a risk, too, because they often have elevated THC ratios. If you maintain a low tolerance, you can get blasted without needing to adjust anything.

As for strains becoming weaker. I'm not sure that that is actually the case. The use of some of the higher end growing equipment could very well just be due to people trying to push their plants to the absolute limits of their genetics, so they can maximize profits and/or minimize personal costs. You can grow a clone and get a few grams after 60 days, or you can grow the same clone and get a few pounds in the same amount of time, depending on your setup and practices.

I also developed some kind of, i dont know how to call it, allergic reaction when using cannabis...its not that i´m starting to feel bad or vomitting but more of a strange tensness in my left chest/shoulder region when using thc..its going away wihtin days if i stop and comes back everytime i start vaping again and gets worse when i go on vaping...its not a pain but gets to a point where i feel it all the time and that also makes me anxious that something is just not alright

I was alrdy at the lung doc who said everything is perfectly fine, dabbing is the worst trigger followed by (pure weed) smoking..the least symptoms occur when using my mighty and cartridges :/

Rly dont have any clue what the problem is, tried weed from var. sources cuz i thought maybe im doing something wrong with my own grown but the symptoms keep occuring so i stopped now completly...will take now a looonger break and see whats going on but since i love weed thats a big bummer for me aswell :(

It’s ok bro. Main thing is health. I can probably never smoke again. But I’ve come to terms with that. I love weed too. I love it. When I smell it, I love the smell.

But oh well, I gotta be well for my family.

it is a very small percentage of people... I have seen growers claim the same exact response with first time users using cannabis that had neem oil pesticide azadirachtin .
