Firewood 5 vs Crafty

I’m looking to buy a portable vape for use while I visit family in a recreational state during the winter holidays and I’ve narrowed it down to the Crafty or the FW5 and need help making my decision. I know in a lot of ways they are very different vapes, but I think that either of them would likely serve me well for this purchase and have been unable to find much in the way of comparison between them. I expect that’s partly due to how different they are, but I hope that one of you may have useful info.

I’m going to be primarily using it myself, though I expect I’ll be sharing with family who are unfamiliar with vapes on at least 3 occasions. I want to use it both with concentrates and dry herb though primarily dry herb. My budget is about $200. I won’t have a back up vape so I want it to be reliable. I’ll probably be using it 3-4 times daily for 2 weeks and will have the ability to charge it or swap out batteries if needed between sessions and will then subsequently be using it 3-4 times a week when I’m back with all my other vapes. When I’m traveling I’ll need it to be able to effectively knock me out in the evening to help with insomnia and chronic pain, and will need it to be reasonably good at lower temps to help with pain while leaving me able to socialize with family who do not partake. I will primarily use it outside and I know that there are potential issues there when it is cold but will be able to allow it to warm up inside first if I needed to.

I’d also love to use either through water so anyone who has experience or comparisons on that functionality it’d be greatly appreciated, but the primary usage will be without a water pipe.

I’m hoping that some of y’alls opinions can help me make a decision today while things are still on sale.

No exp w/ the crafty, or with water....but I would hesitate to use concentrates in the FW5, though, with organic cotton or degummed hemp I would occasionally use them in my FW2. I got my FW2 when it was being discussed as a portable rival to log vapes, and I can attest to it, as well as newer generations of FW models, (I have a FW5, and recently picked up a FW4) assisting me with insomnia, and chronic pain, including migraines. I have watched some vids on youtube with various FW models through water, you could consider checking those out if needed.

So, one thing to take into consideration with the Crafty is which state in the winter. The Crafty, speaking as a Canadian, sometimes chugs in the winter. The heater is not particularly powerful and will struggle in the cold - taxing battery life and taking an extended period of time. I have used it down to around -15 C and it was not the experience I know. Even letting it heat up inside then going outside for the session left it struggling. If the temps are going to hover closer to 0 C then I wouldn't worry too much. Just expect a bit of a slow down and keep a decent USB batter pack at hand.

The Craft is pretty fucking wicked through water. You can really milk some glass and either take it slow or really haul the load. I have used a small bubbler with my Crafty many times and pairing it with the Magic Flight Orbiter my buddy has got is . I have also used a J-hook for a sweet techno Sherlock Holmes dealio to help me solve problems. In terms of adapters, I would strongly suggest looking at the Delta 3D Studios SonG. I don't own one, but I recommend it over the hard plastic one that I received when purchasing a Mighty from PIU. It kind of worries me and I do not use it very often. Scared of breakage.

For cold temps I have found that the Vapcap is pretty handy. It is very versatile. If paired with an induction heater, even more so. The VC, stash and lighter are a handy little set. I have found that the Ti handles better in the cold; the SS can take a bit longer. But nowhere near the Crafty in terms of heat up. Just something to consider. Also a Solo is a pretty inexpensive and proven vape that holds up well in the cold, even if the glass mouthpiece is a bit chilly.

I’ve had some positive experience using hemp fiber to consume with prior FW models, but I found the heat it reaches to be insufficient to use the concentrate material as effectively as I would prefer. I had reasonable success using the FW4 in that way, @Vapeur Rogue could you perhaps elaborate on your hesitation there?

@Slagzord I always have a couple usb battery packs around when traveling so I expect that aspect of it to not be much of a challenge. I expect the coldest it’d get while I’m using it outside on this trip would be not much below 0 C, possibly as low as -5 C but certainly not as far as -15C. And worst case scenario I figure where I’m staying I can get away with using it in the sauna before bed or sticking my head outside to exhale.

I’m still equally conflicted about which to get, I’ve wanted to get ahold of a S&B unit for a while so I may just go with that as they are somewhat of an institution and excellent medical devices, but I’ve also had good experiences with earlier FW models(3&4) though have found them to not quite have the punch I’ve wanted from them, but have read that the 5 has a bit more of a kick and I love the reported ease of the five chambers. I think I may just end up going with the FW5 for this trip and eventually getting a crafty or maybe even a mighty some time down the line because I’m very much wanting a better vape to share and session with friends at home and now I’ve almost talked myself into getting a Crafty rather than a FW5, too bad both isn’t an option right now, I guess I’ll have to get one now and tell myself that I’ll get the other one probably on sale some time in April.

I truly understand having to muzzle VAS due to finances! It sounds like whatever you decide, you have you next 2 vapes- one now and one for later /ASAP selected.
Addressing your question-
My main hesitation re: concentrates is if there was any residue in the individual capsules when out and about, I would just remove the whole thing, fiber and all, place in a med container and deal with it when I got home. With the linked chambers with the FW5, while I still have a container for my AVB, I don't want to risk any residue since I don't want to remove the entire line. On the other hand, with the greater temp range, It might be better for concentrates than the 2 prior models?

*Note: I also have no exp with sharing vapes.

Will you be using either of these vapes skiing/boarding? As an avid skier until sideline with back issues I cannot say enough how important it is to be able to swap batteries. When batteries get cold the chemical reactions slow not allowing them to perform. Vapes with larger batteries (Mighty vs. Crafty) will tolerate this better, but ultimately if you can keep a replaceable battery in close to your body so you’ll always have a warm spare, that is ideal. Or as suggested use a VapCap. Colorado is pretty sunny and I have struggled with seeing the flame on torch lighters in bright sun, particularly with sunglasses on.

I will be skiing during some of my travel but planned on pre and post medicating rather than medicating while out and about skiing, and perhaps having a relatively low dose edible to get me through the day if necessary. Due to a handful of factors it’s not ideal for me to spend the entire day out on the mountains anyway. Fortunately, where I’ll be staying while skiing is ski in ski out so if I felt the need to medicate midday I can run inside. I also expect at least one family member I’ll be skiing with to have vape carts out and about on the mountain and while I generally prefer dabbing or dry herb vaping over those, for a variety of reasons including those tend to never get me enough meds to sleep, I imagine I’ll be able to take a few hits off of one of those during the day to keep my spirits up if necessary. But it is a fair point to consider that. With that usage though I’d be significantly anxious about breaking the glass on the FW5 and would probably not be super comfortable bringing it out skiing for that purpose.

@j-bug Of course,

I do not know your mileage - but, I have found that often, I can vape, plus have edible or food that I have observed extends effects during the main effect time, and that can lower the number of times I need to medicate in a day, and often, if taken near my usual last doses for the night- help me sleep/sleep better. Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss further- I'm more then willing to share my personal observations.

I like the DaVinci IQ for skiing, typically on about the last 2-3 runs I'd stop in a glade with a friend or two and pass the IQ around. The only downside is it does have a large chamber and is primarily a conduction vape. But it's built like a tank and the battery maybe swapped. Perhaps the new Davici MIQRO, but it has it's drawbacks. I have heard durability concerns about the FW5. The Crafty with a fixed battery may not suit your purpose.

How firm is your 200$ budget?
This can make it easier to narrow your choices.
Sounds like the Crafty is out.( Well over 300$ Canadian.)
Also sounds like you need a strong unit able to hit hard for your ailments.
If you can bump that budget number up 50 bucks or so, your options may increase.
Just a thought. Sounds like your going at this the right way. I'm sure you'll find the perfect vape for your needs.
Good luck and keep on shredding.
And vaping, of course.

My budget right now is pretty tight and I’m talking USD here, puffitup has the Crafty today with discount code at 223.5. I think that with the loading capsules for $10 more and the various usb power packs I have lying around is probably what’s going to be the best most reliable option for my needs this trip, I’ll probably decide one way or another in the next couple hours and I’ll update everyone with my choice once I’ve put my money down, but welcome more viewpoints and opinions till then.

Edit: I got the Crafty from puffitup, and am looking forward to this trip

If you’re concerned about the cold, a pocket hand warmer should help to keep the battery ready to go. I haven’t tried it, but as long as it’s not extreme heat I think it should be fine. Have a good trip!

Bring a SmokeBuddy (buy or make one) in case you need/want to stay inside and medicate.

FYI, I was preparing to recommend a Boundless Tera to you. It has 2 18650 batteries so you can vape a long time and even then you could swap a second pair of 18650's (1 comes included) with no downtime. Tera has a Concentrate mode, also.

@j-bug awesome choice on the Craft given all you have said. You will super enjoy it.

I would recommend looking into picking up some dosing caps. They are very fairly priced and are a real boon to device maintenance and cleanliness. Plus, if you load up 8 caps you are generally good for a day of sipping on your S&B device.

I got one of the 10 packs at the same time from puffitup with the magazine. USPS tracking is saying it should get to me today and I’m looking forward to receiving it all, though idk if I’ll be able to handle waiting to use it till I’m on vacation, I think I’ll have to give it a test run tonight. I’m gonna go reread most of the crafty thread
