Herb Grinders

So I just got a new 3pc Santa Cruz Shredder. The only grinder that I've ever used for almost a decade now is a Space Case. There's only one word that I can use to describe the shredder..........."Consistency". I've never had that kind of consistent grind out my Space Case. Lovin' this grinder.

Is there a 'best of' thread anywhere for grinders?

Are there any recommendations for four piece grinders that dont cost the earth?

Edit: do these seem legitimate?

IMHO, getting a quality Grinder really pays of, even if it is expensive... i had so many cheap ones until i spent the cash for a kannastör which was a joy to use for many Years.
Now i use a SLX which i really like...

Have a look at
  • Santa Cruz Shredder
  • SLX
  • Kannastör
  • Space Case
i would recommend SCS or SLX right now, the newer Kannastörs are more "special need Grinders".

The not released Brilliant Cut Grinder gets much love here...

VERY much love it seems! Is it just a hype as often here on FC?
Hope I'll get mine in a few weeks to check it myself. At least it's the most beautiful one and the concept of interchangeable middle plates for changing grind size is tempting.

That's not true. Normally I wait for first experiences/reviews and remodeling to eliminate teething troubles. More patience is the favour of getting older and it spares you a lot of frustration
Maybe I'll it get one of the first for a European MJ mag review and bc I'm the name sakes? ;)

I don'[t u8nderstand what the difference is between these $200 (or even $80) and the $30 grinder I bought 20 years ago that still works great.

Am I missing some special feature that these high end grinders have?

Mine says 'Aerospace" (NOT Aerospaced) and is a basic metal grinder. Looks like all the other "high end" grinders. Probably a knock-off of the Aerospaced grinder.

What's the real difference?

Inflation? Hype? Marketing? Generally overpriced mj products as niche products?
Or just outstanding quality of materials, processing a/o performance?

canj00digit?

All my days in a daze...
Very little difference, really.

The S&B basic orange plastic grinder is still one of the best I've ever used and less than $10.

I only really use my 3" SCS because it allows me to grind much more at one time.

If I only need to grind small amounts I usually grab the S&B.

but I got the SCS in 2012, and have used that same 2 piece SCS since.
Glad to hear from two people I really respect about the SCS. You guys know I love mine . . .

They seem like they are legitimate, but I have had "fit" troubles with the coated Space Cases... The coating makes all a bit more snug, and wears off in spots.
I love the Space Cases, but in original metal without a finish.
Another 4 piece I liked is the Shred 2.25 Edition 4 Piece Herb Grinder by Healthy Rips.

Thanks @Vitolo ! Ahh thats a shame about the paint, always worry that then it can make its way into my herbs! Too bad i already ordered it!

Maybe i will soak it in iso to get all the coating off before i use it!

This is true. Not sure if SC is using paint, I know they do use anodized finishes though. I would not be interested in a painted grinder for sure.

The SC Ti version is an anodized finish. It can wear and is also susceptible to what you see below if you clean with a high alkaline product.

I know I have posted this pic before but all the links broke a while back so I'm reposting this pic to show people what cleaners like PBW can do to anodized finishes.

I have been led to understand that the coating is an anodized (as @t-dub has said) colored titanium finish... hence the snugger fit.
The titanium finish does wear off, and even occasionally can chip.
I would likely not try to remove the finish chemically or otherwise...
Just keep the using the grinder... (it was a good deal!) and do a weekly inspection to see if there has been any wear. The titanium finish responds well to an iso bath and scrubbing, same as the non coated version.

not forgetting to mention this will also happen to your grinder if you wash it in your automatic dishwasher

Excellent point. I forgot that about half of PBW is Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) substitute which is the main ingredient in automatic dishwasher products and is highly alkaline in nature. Just goes to show you always have to be thinking when working with chemicals of any kind.
