Study shows cannabis accelerates brain aging?

I feel like 80 years old since I am 25. So I am 82.8 years old instead? That's a negligible gap if I take all the good things into account that Cannabis did to me. I am sure that consuming heavy pain killers for decades robs more of your brain capacity over time. So I am not overly concerned by the study. But if I would be a purely recreational user, then this might get me into thinking.

I think the article is misleading, there is a correlation between mental illness and cannabis use but as we all know correlation does not necessarily equal causation furthermore we need to consider the direction of causation.
Does cannabis use cause mental illness or does mental illness cause cannabis use?
In other words it has been suggested that people with mental illness find cannabis helpful.
I would suggest that things like high blood pressure bad diet and a sedentary lifestyle have a more significant negative impact on brain health.

I'm sure there results to what tobacco and alcohol would cause is exponentially worse.

Agreed. So many articles are misleading and the general public do not think about it at all when reading these. Manipulated. Understanding causation and correlation is beyond the sheep.

Well said. You wrote it I will endorse it and save bandwidth.

I would like to see a comparison of brain scans of chronic pain patients comparing cannabis users to opioid users. See which is better for the brain (and everything else).

Big difference between use and abuse, funny they didn't investigate alcohol use or abuse  plus as plenty of studies have shown the exact opposite.

I wonder who funded the "research"

I'm thinking that the US private prisons would be keen to reverse the legalisation of cannabis?

Big time.

Current legal state systems are already designed for the rich though. The cons in these states who allowed us to have cannabis made sure we are taxed hard and that poor people remain at risk to feed the prison system. :myday: (atleast in PA).

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
Maybe the supposed effects on the brain wouldn't be evident if cannabis users didn't have the deal with all the crap that comes with federal prohibition. Maybe , just maybe, the constant worry of being judged by peers, worry of losing your career, worry of being identified as an unfit parent, worry of being charged/arrested, worry of forfeiting your possessions, worry of being kicked out of your apartment, worry of having a criminal record, etc. has it's own negative effect on the brain.

Maybe if the government and society would just leave us the fuck alone, then we would be more free to enjoy the positives.

Sorry I haven't read the entire articles but this is an interesting topic. I have suffered with migraines all my life. Only very strong medication or cannabis come close to alleviating the symptoms. I started using cannabis as recreational but have no friends who use that I see regularly for my use to be recreational. I quit smoking earlier this year and now vape almost daily. I also discovered cbd hemp flowers that are being sold as legal here in the UK although they're not fully legal? I use the cbd more than thc now and do take regular breaks at least a few days every couple of weeks to give my receptors chance to recover. I would take the pain relief that I get over those 'lost' years. Wondering how lost they are when you can't open your eyes/walk due to 'headache'.

The schizophrenia article is interesting too. People self medicating and things haven't been caught before hand. I know we're a vape forum but I have had experiences with magical fungi that would correlate with this. Trauma uncovered in one episode and through that the person spoke to the family member in question. It wasn't a quick easy fix and I guess a shrink could have got that out but again to me this is self medication.

I'm very interested in these 'gifts from the God's' similar to salvia divinorium, there is a Mexican/aztec God Xochipilli I need to research more. It feels to me like these ways of healing or rituals that were discovered centuries ago have been lost over time. I also feel like there is underlying knowledge like the cannabis/self medication route that these articles and studies can't acknowledge. Like we all know when we're thirsty and we all know it's our body telling us to hydrate but when you're thirsty you're already dehydrated and you were way before your body sent it's panic signals. With hemp eradicated from our food supply is this our bodies saying we need cannabinoids - stress trauma fatigue deficiency? We're just lucky that we found cannabis and tried it and enjoyed it.

I wonder how many people on earth have a cannabinoid deficiency?

I asked this question with the mushrooms too- do we need them/do they need us, is there some sort of synergy between us and them. I definitely believe there should be some regulation but the regulation I would suggest would also consider alcohol, sugar and many other foods allowed through the safety net with no consideration. If people can't be trusted with 'hard drugs' they definitely shouldn't be trusted with sugar. I'm in the UK but I think we're pretty similar throughout this western civilisation the health care that we receive from our government isn't health care at all it's just a way to pedal medication.

What I consider to be health care is what you put in to your body. Exercise. Being active and leading by example. Taking care of our elders and not leaving them to rot in a stuffy box. We're so much better than this and we know it. It's sad to see. It doesn't make me proud of what we are as a planet right now. Yes we are awesome and we can do amazing things but we have so much more potential

Wasn't expecting so much traction on this post thread since yesterday... Apologies in advance for my brevity.

I know personally and from contact with others that "mental illness does cause people to gravitate towards cannabis use"...
With autism, it is very apparent. How many self-sufficient autistic persons do you know who do not use cannabis?
(And shortly after I started treating vertigo with Cannabis, I was able to stop taking all high blood pressure meds with Doctor's blessing!)

I think I'll quit cannabis now, and I'll take those years back :p
Something like a post I'd find on reddit. :p

I am pretty sure it will be fairly easy to pull up some studies which show that cannabis has a positive influence on brain health...
Please do.

Big difference between use and abuse,
Absolutely, that's why I so push dosage monitoring with any I speak. to. :sherlock:

I wonder who funded the "research"

Affiliations: [a] Amen Clinics, Inc., Costa Mesa, CA, USA | Google Inc., Mountain View, CA, USA | [c] UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA | [d] Jo UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco, CA, USA | [e] Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA

operative word in the article is abuse, article is misleading as a few others pointed out.
"The conclusions come from the largest ever study of its type of 62,454 brain scans on over 30,000 people".
Is this really enough to base a conclusive study?

I would suggest that things like high blood pressure bad diet and a sedentary lifestyle have a more significant negative impact on brain health.

I could not agree more with this..

Two years makes a difference at my age. Still I think Amen's spectscans results are questionable. I wonder what people were the source of the scans? If most were from his clinics then they were there for other problems. I don't think he looks at the impact of comorbid conditions like ADD and cannabis. Also I considered going to one of his clinics decades ago but couldn't afford it. If I had gone I probably would have denied cannabis use and I doubt I'm the only one who would have done that. The scans are too general.

Cannabis accelerating brain aging?

Can you change your post title to indicate "cannabis abuse"? Is it possible to change your title verbage?
The study includes cannabis abuse, but I couldn't find what they define as such???

Cannabis has been shown to help so many "brain issues" like MS, Parkinsons, epilsepsy, PTSD, autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimers, etc that even IF cannabis ABUSE aged the brain some, the overall cannabis score is like a zillion to one on the good : harm ratio.
