Should you see vapor?

I have not been vaping long and I think I am doing it correctly. However, some websites state you should not see *any* vapor if done right while others state you *may* see a little and lastly, may websites bragging how large the clouds they can get.

Just in case, I am referring to vaping marijuana. I use the Boundless CFX and the Mighty and get the same results from both running around 359-365 degrees.

When I Vape, I see vapor when I exhale and while not billowing clouds it is a steady stream when exhaled. My flower is always a tan to light brown when I am done and I never see ash or charring.

So which is correct on exhale, no vapor, a little very light vapor, steady vapor or billowing clouds of vapor?

If you wonder whether it's normal to see some and if it's smoke, then no it's not smoke, it's just vapour, especially with your two devices that can't combust.

Lighting conditions also change drastically how visible it is. If you have say a ray of sunshine falling on your floor through your window and if you exhale across it you'll realize that there is way more than you imagined. Same when you use a torch / flashlight / phone flash to light up your exhale. Try different angles but when you'll find the right one you'll be amazed by the density and quantity.

If you're asking whether you should exhale visible vapor or nothing then the debate is still ongoing and there are many threads already discussing the subject. Do a search for "clouds" and tick "search titles only", you'll get food for thoughts.

It's probably wasteful, but it's oh so satisfying so... your call! :tup:

If your herb is ending up tan to light brown, that is further evidence that you're not combusting. Even with charring herb, which I see as a step below combusting, you would have blackened herb and a foul burnt flavor. That isn't going to happen at temps of 365 F.

I have never heard of "if you are doing it correctly you shouldn't see any vapor." You can certainly be doing just fine and get visual clouds, but they do not need to be very large clouds to be extracting medicine. Now you may be vaping just fine and not notice a lot of cloud vapor. I agree with @KeroZen that a good way to see the vapor more clearly is to blow your hit across a light, which is called the "tyndall effect".

The amount of noticable cloud is dependent of several factors, such as the amount of cannabinoids in your herb, the vape you're using, the temp, and whether you're vaping through water. Many people like to take their vaped herb (ABV) to a medium to dark brown color.

My advice is don't worry what others tell you is the best or correct way. Keep experimenting for yourself. If your herb is darkening but not black and you're feeling lifted then you got your mojo going. ;) Enjoy and welcome to the FC!

Combustion starts at roughly 396 Fahrenheit for flower if memory serves me so anything under that is almost impossible to have smoke.

That seems a bit low. As far as I remember, combustion starts much higher than that. I normally run my vapes at their highest temps to finish off a load, and most of those vapes highest temps are between 420 and 430, and they still do not combust (I know that combustion temps aren't far above these temps, but these temps are not there yet). I rarely run any vape below 390

  • THC: 157 °C. The most famous cannabinoid. It has both euphoric and analgesic effects, inducing a great sense of relaxation.
  • CB: 160 - 180 °C. The cannabinoid most sought after by medical users for its vast array of medicinal applications. It partly counters the effects of THC, effectively countering feelings of anxiety and paranoia.
  • Delta-8-THC: 175 – 178 °C. This cannabinoid is very similar to THC, but it is more stable and less psychoactive. It has great anti-vomiting properties.
  • CBN: 185 °C. CBN is often found in quite small amounts, however, its effects can still be felt. It breaks down THC and is highly associated with a sedative effect.
  • CBC: 220 °C. This cannabinoid has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
  • THCV: 220 °C. THCV has been shown to moderate the psychoactive effects of THC, but more research is required.
Combustion: Dry weed can begin to combust at around 200 °C. The maximum heat weed can take before starting to burn is around 230 °C., depending on how humid it is.

Just my understanding of how it roughly works....I still get confused by this.

Smoke and Vapor are totally different compounds. So when you are vaping...you should see no smoke....you should see vapor.

You can turn up your heat and get more visible vapor. I would suggest you probably do not need to go over say 385. Start about 368....then try 376....then 384. You should see the difference of the heat in the amount of visible vapor if your flower is good.

You can get your material very dark dark brown well before combustion. As you gain more experience in time you will understand this using the same vape over and over.

What is in flower is cannabinoids, terpenes, flavinoids and like another 400 compounds including a sizable amount of water vapor.

Water vapor is transparent. When it looks white (clouds, etc) its water vapor condensing (very often around a small particle like dust).

So, when we drive good bud through a good vape, we get white vapor. White vapor. White vapor is visible.

Claims made of good extraction without visible vapor is, to me, like the story of The Emperor's New Clothes. If you can't see it, its not really there.

Alot is trial and error. I really don't want to say error, unless you combust. Moisture content in the herb comes into play, and so does the temp of the unit. On my Solo II, I have found 383F about perfect and it really does not matter much about the moisture in the herb. If it is dry 370 can be a bit better and if it is moist 390 can be a bit better.

I was stair stepping, but now just set it and forget it.

i feel if i exhale vapor, that is wasted vapor - it should be absorbed. i can see the vapor in the draw tube during the inhale, so i know what i'm getting - seeing it on exhale is not necessary to know it's there. so i can control the amount inhaled so very little is wasted.

adding fresh air at the end of the inhale helps to absorb more of the vapor in the lungs.
