Hex-Nail (HN-01) - RIP

...but in high quality I think? Wasn't the case with all parts installed by HN I mean to understand.
List of needed parts would be nice esp. for a HN-01 clone.

Anyone had any luck with PayPal's Resolution Center? Has anyone been refunded by the company, and if not, how long are you waiting to escalate the claim to PayPal?

I got my refund around the start of the month. I did have to wait a bit for them to respond and then when they failed to, I escalated it to PayPal and again had to wait for I think two weeks. At that point it was approved by PayPal and I got my refund.

The owner specifically told me to escalate to PayPal as they weren’t responding to stuff there and most likely had zero cash in the account.

Thanks for the info. Did PayPal ask you what the product was? I ask b/c Hexnail products are probably classified as drug paraphernalia, which violates PayPal's Buyer Protection Policy.

Glad you got your dough back :)

Negative. I just disputed the original purchase stating I never received the product and got the refund.

Just out of curiosity, what do you figure parts investment is for a DIY?

Orange Pi Zero
8GB+ microSD
XLR Port
Power Entry Module
Switch - Could opt to get a combo from the above link
Solid State Relay

You could definitely make one for $70-120 USD

This is without the lights. I can't find the SSR used in the Hex, might need to pull off the glue to see more. The part I'm looking for is the black piece in the bottom right of the pic with the EB76G31996 barcode:

MNbD9nm.jpg

I also need to find out which pins the wires are connected to, what that yellow/green ribbon is, and what the little black thing in the middle is. If anyone opens their unit, please upload pics!

When I finish my testing on the new board I'll disassemble further to get what I need to make a functioning test unit, and I'll post the exact parts used so we can find out the COGS. Before everyone freaks out about the low cost, keep in mind that the software is the unique element that makes the Hex what it is.

Mine works fine with the webapp still. If it's connected to the wifi, find out what its local IP is (will probably need to get to the router's management page to see this), and then go here from anything connected to the same network as the wifi:

http://hex.nail.ip.here:8710/

From there, either try connecting to a different network, or remove the existing network from wpa_supplicant.conf. To do so, click Show Advanced, and then remove everything between the brackets in the input field for wpa_supplicant.conf. Then when you restart the unit, it will go back into AP mode so you can connect to the Hex via wifi and attempt setting it up on the network again. wpa_supplicant.conf will look like this:
Code:
network={
    ssid="NameOfWiFiNetwork"
    #psk="WiFiPasswordInPlaintextLOL"
    psk=EncryptedWiFiPassword
}

Make it look like this, save, reboot:
Code:
network={
}

Also, my Orange Pi Zero has arrived :D

... @JigMelon Thanks for that info!!! i will have to book mark that for later...

...may have saved me from rebuying my old hex :lol:

No problem! If that doesn't work let me know and I'll help you out further over PMs or something. If you want my email or something so your friend can contact me instead of going through you, just shoot me a PM asking.

This is gonna be easier than I was expecting. Already have access to the hexnail user and root, can change password and everything.

It's ridiculous how easy it is to get root. I'm probably going to share all my findings with the new owners of the software, for the security of any future customers they may have. In that regard, if there ever are updates for the HexNail devices, they may include some of my suggestions and/or other security measures; if you are interested in tinkering with your own device, don't forget to take an image of your SD card before updating.

Edit: How to imgur?

Edit2: By using imgbb instead.

Edit3: The picture was done on my testing board, but I just did it with my working unit the same way; no issues. Logged in via SSH right now while watching the stats on the official webapp.

Edit4: New owners have been informed. I'll be further discussing the security issues with them in the near future, for the benefit of device owners. Although I haven't been asked to stop, I am going to hold off on discussing this here until I've had a chance to make things more official with them. Trying to help everyone here as well as the new owners, but I need to ensure that I've taken the necessary steps to protect myself. Good news coming.

Nice work @JigMelon !

I jumped on the hexnail on the 2nd release had bunch of troubles connecting wifi inside and out at friends house, coffeeshops and cups. Its a running joke with many that i cant have my enail becuase it has to be connected to the wifi haha, i had one shop give me there private wifi just to try still no luck haha i just keep it next to my router now pretty stuck.

So ive always emailed hex etc asking if we could ever upgrade the network card to have bluetooth access to view the app. Also the range on the wifi signal is so poor lol. And now after reading all your posts ive seen the hardware and hope your right that we can just implement a usb BT il be fully down for trying that with my HN-02. Iam going to take mine apart tonight really hoping i dont see all that glue :(

And i get all the legal bull to cover yourself for sure, so if we all take backups now and then they do there updates wouldnt that make us able to chat about previous versions and play around with the software?

What new owners?
And why aren't they liable for the losses of customers? For sure we are speaking about some 10K.
And how can Ava&Liz sell something of the company w/o using that money for satisfying creditors?
Would like to know the story - and legal situation - behind.

Yes we do but I think the legal situation currently correlates with that.

It sounds like they were drowning in debt and broke, they probably used it to pay something but there obviously wasn't enough to go around. I doubt they got much for the code/software anyway since they were in a very weak negotiating position and probably got lowballed for it.

The consumer protection laws seem to be much better in Germany than over here. If you're curious you should read up on US bankruptcy and insolvency laws, usually everyone with unsecured debt with the company and all its employees and customers are SOL. If you sent in something you own to be repaired or even dryclean clothes you may lose those items in a bankruptcy or have a hell of a time getting them back.

@GOD710 It's 100% possible to get it working with a USB BT dongle, but not until we've figured out how to properly format the json requests for hexnaild. Once that's figured out, the possibilities are endless. Make your own webapp to rep your company at events, make your own smart-whatever integration, etc. The only thing getting in the way is understanding how to communicate with hexnaild, which is the software that tells the hardware what to do. It should be fairly simple but I haven't yet taken the time to figure it out. That's on the todo list but it'll probably be 2 weeks before I get around to it.

@Hogni Idk enough about this in regard to who owes what, but the new ownership will likely be speaking up soon. They probably won't address that but at least you'll know who to contact.

Regarding legal matters, keep in mind the possibility of them buying just the software, rather than the company.

I really wasn't going to say anything; but I'm not shocked. They were burning through cash before they got the first series of devices. In fact they couldn't refund me so someone else purchased my pre-order slot. That's how I got refunded.

Came too fast to market; needed to prototype more and figure out how to keep cost down and figure out the supply chain so you can get what you need without throwing away money.

Prototype to production (even light production) is a lot of work.

Is there absolutely no solid info regarding specifics pertaining to bankruptcy , dissolution, remaining financial liabilities, and, side deals with team rosin and/or others?

Others have alluded to excercising caution about sharing this kind of info.
Perplexed as to why anyone not under a (likely completely unenforceable) NDA is reluctant to share.

My greatest concern is that these two could do the same thing all over again behind another created entity with zero financial ramifications for all the customers of theirs that were overtly lied to and stolen from.

I found their state business record, according to it they had an "administrative dissolution" on December 28, 2017 which I'm guessing is because they flaked on their taxes or submitting reports. This link has some info on what that means for a company, it doesn't dissolve the LLC itself but it kneecaps them and is a very bad sign. If you poke around you may be able to find more info.

Someone else said they broke up so it's not likely. With all the liabilities tied to the old business they could legally start a new company if they wanted, that's basically how the auto-bailouts worked with the current General Motors company only being 9 years old now.

I've discussed my security concerns and research with them, and have also discussed my interest in the source code being made transparent and/or having the compiled binaries be licensed for distribution; that is the extent of my relationship with either company at this point. Just to clarify, my statements thus far have been made while not having a NDA with anyone involved. Whether or not I will have one in the future, I don't know. I was restricting info for my own protection since the software is not yet individually licensed (as far as I know), and the suggestion to not dig further was for the girls' privacy. If someone wants to pursue legal action they should use public records regarding the business (such as that linked by @Monsoon) for research; what I intended to portray is that there is no need to have a witch hunt on their personal lives.
