The Nomad From Morwood

Nice! So you'll be able to compare and tell us whether the vapor is really hotter with the wooden stem. It should be to some extent due to the lower thermal conductivity coefficient of wood. But since the OG Nomad glass stem is rather thin and light, maybe the difference is not that clear?

There's a slight difference not sure if woulda even noticed if wasn't looking for it. Seems the wood is just a tad warmer.

There's something about wooden stems I enjoy more than the glass ones. The wood just feels better against the lips than glass imho.

I love using the wood stems because they look great, but man oh man are the glass stems 100x easier to keep clean.

For me it's more is the breakable aspect of glass. I have issue with my hands and glass items tend to end up broken. I have couple of glass options for special occasions but for day to day use prefer wood.

I agree glass is easier to soak in iso and clean. But I don't really feel the wooden stem are that hard to keep clean. I have a bristle tube brush that and a little iso does a good job cleaning them.

Realized there was something else about the stem from Alan I forgot to mention. He made it so one end has a 12mm bowl with a 10mm hole all the way through it. Even included 2 size stems so can either use it either way.

The 10mm end makes a great little micro doser with the screen inserted basket style. The other end has 12mm drilled out area about a inch deep. Allowing a much larger adjustable bowl depending on how deep screen is insert. Really like having couple option in how I can use it.

What is the length of the stem and does it cool the vapor sufficiently?

TIA!

I've got some custom stem made locally of stainless steel bowl (inside the Nomad) and long acrylic mouthpiece (outside). It vapes great, tastier than glass, and cools vapor just right. Well, it eats batteries 1.5 times faster but I am OK with this. Now I'm going to bend it and @Dan Morrison, please, advise me on bending:
  1. How to heat acrylic - hair-dryer, boiling water, etc.?
  2. Should I insert some wire into the air channel before bending to prevent channel's collapsing?
  3. What shape/angle do you recommend?
I wish you made it :)

That’s cool.

I’m down with any mouthpiece that has the flat black and mild tip over a round mouthpiece any day.

@Xelatsok , Whoa! That acrylic stem is awesome! I wonder... with the Stainless steel chamber, do you experience any added conduction heating vs. the glass chamber?

For bending, well... I can't really be of much help there. I have never bent any plastic stems... only bamboo.

It seems like there are a couple good acrylic stem bending tutorial videos on Youtube, I would check there first.

I wouldn't use a solid wire in the stem to keep the airway from collapsing. Any solid wire might get pinched and become very difficult to remove after the bending. I have read about some people using soft pipe-cleaners stuffed into the stem to help keep the airway open, but for the most part professional pipe-makers don't use anything in the airway when bending... so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For heating, I think that a heat gun will be required, hair dryer or boiling water is most likely too low-heat. For a cheaper alternative, a soft alcohol lamp, or other large clean burning soft flame would probably nicely as well.

A blowtorch would most likely be too harsh, and the line between just the right amount of heat, and blistering the surface of the acrylic would be very fine. I wouldn't attempt it without practice first.

For shape, I think antique "Chinese water pipes" offer a good starting plae for inspiration. The general shape is very similar to the Nomad... very boxy... but they all have those long stems... google images should give ya a good idea of the sort of style I am imagining.

She's purring along after the cleaning was done. Performed great well I was camping.

Dan, you won me a bet :) was showing a friend my nomad. He thought I was bullshitting him when told him how much of this item is handcrafted. Pulled up googles and showed him some pic and this thread.

Bet you can guess who payed for pizza that evening:).

So, 25 Nomads in the wild and nobody commenting in this thread?! Woooooooooooot!!!!!

:buzz:

I think most active threads have a lot more units in the wild and/or have a lot of problems to complain about, so I don’t think it’s really a problem that it’s quiet right now. I’d be happy to hear from some more users or to get updates from @Dan Morrison though!

All I can really say is that the Nomad’s still at the top of my wishlist, but I’m afraid I’m delaying my chance to get one by promoting it all over FC... :ugh:

Oh, and I did see someone new ( @primitiveorganic ) in the VapCap thread recently making wooden tubes to carry stems in, so if some of you Nomadmen/women need a nice looking container or two to carry extra stems it might be worth looking him up. :)

I would just suggest getting something from Dan, but he’s already got more work than he needs right now!

Here’s an example of primitiveorganic’s VapCap work:

The 25th Nomad of batch 1 is being mocked up by @Dan Morrison as we speak.

He needed that road trip and I was slow responding to one of his emails so it's taking a bit longer than anticipated. Plus we have a number of elements we have been discussing so just narrowing down the design as has taken time.

What I can say is that the emails have been flying back and forth between us and progress is being made. I'm in no rush and he is taking the time that's needed to attend to all the details.

I was about to change my name to mopey_zoo_lion!

I think that's everyone so far.

Here is a concept I drew up for Dan a while back. We have moved some of the elements around but the theme is roughly the same. The colour scheme will be similar as well.

I can confirm Dan really 'works' with you to create your personal Nomad.

I have been amazed at how Dan takes you on a Journey with him, a unique ride, with end station a machine that both creator and the one it is being created for can be proud of.

It is quiet here sometimes, and to be honest, I was expacting more feedback too. But maybe this silence means most owners for now are happy?

The respons to 'problems' has been constructive, with users and creator thinking out loud and resolving these little things quickly. So nice to see this.

Looking back to when the idea of the Nomad was born, march 26th 2016, and where it is at now is simply breathtaking. Even more so because this proces is still here to see and read, for Anybody that might be interested in it. And I am sure Anybody that takes the time to read this thread, even when the proces has progressed this far, will still be able to feel part of it, as we al did.

So....who will give us those Milk shot videos we are all so longing for:D

Absolutely man, I couldn't agree more.

I've been throwing ideas at him left and centre. He's been coming back with mockups and questions about style, themes, elements.

My first mockup to Dan:

After discussing the theme with Dan I mocked this up:

Dan came back with some questions on art style. He sent over a link to his Pinterest list of ideas for my concept.

I settled on the firewatch art style:

Dan came back with some colour themes and I selected the below:

There has been a lot of discussion of the details for the elements like the birds and the sun as well as an engraving on the back of the switch plate.

I have enjoyed the Nomad processes no end and the journey really is half the fun. Dan takes it one step at a time and walks you through it, you get to be a part of the creative process and I'm sure it is going to endear me to this vape for the rest of my life. I'll be leaving this vape to someone in my will. Don't expect to see it in the classifieds. :goon:
