Looking to get a vaporizer, but I can't decide between these 3...

Hey FC, I'm new to the community and this is my first post. So I've been smoking medicinally every night for the last 4 years for Crohn's disease, and my lungs have been begging me to stop smoking and start vaping, so I've decided its finally time to make the switch. I've only vaporized once before out of my friends crappy, China made "Vaporite" (it's basically a knock-off of the Vapor Brothers), and I liked the experience, but I knew it wasn't the quality I needed in a vaporizer. I've been looking into the Magic Flight, the Da Buddha, and the Vapor Brothers. I need something that is efficient, but also something that will last me at least a few years and still get me really medicated.

I've read great reviews on all 3 vapes, but I just can't decide . People say the Vapor Brothers is great, but that there is one crucial flaw: the downward angle of the heating element. People say that weed frequently falls down into the heater because of the angle, and that even propping the back end up doesn't really work that well. One thing about the Vapor Brothers I really do like, however, is that the "E-z Change Whip kit" comes with a ceramic screen that you can clean and re-use. Having to buy metal screens every few months when they get clogged is very unappealing to me, which is one thing that has me hesitant about Da Buddha.

And sure, being able to smoke pretty much anywhere with the Magic Flight would be nice, but its not necessary seeing as how at home is mainly where I need to vape. Also having to make sure I always have charged batteries when I need to medicate seems like it would be a real pain. I've been trying to hold off on smoking these last couple days, because my lungs are literally that messed up, and it's really been taking a toll on my stomach (for those of you that don't know, Crohn's patients like myself smoke medicinally for the intense stomach pain), so I'm really trying to make my decision within the next week. Any input would really be appreciated. Thanks

Sure it does. Why wouldn't it? Many people have used this method, or turned it upside down or on its side. I can't remember anyone saying that changing the angle with these methods doesn't work. But aside from that, I think VB continues to ride an out of date reputation. It's no better than some other good box vapes, and despite their claim of a lifetime warranty, you only get 2 yrs. free repair (if you register it). After that you get charged for repair, and paying for repair isn't warranty coverage. Instead of a VB I'd get a VaporBox from Vaporstore. You get a lifetime heater warranty and you can upgrade to a two piece handkit that makes the heater angle a non-issue. With the VaporTower you get the two piece handkit standard. With the vaporstore 10% discount the Tower is under $180.

With good quality vapes efficiency is mostly up to the user. Load up a standard size whip bowl and take big hits and efficiency will suffer. With the Launch Box you have to be careful of the battery connection time or you'll get too hot and lose efficiency. The LB can work well as an only vape, but big vapor hits are not its forte.

With FC discount the DBV (silver version) is a little less than the VaporTower, and has the user friendly heater angle. Personally, I'd go with this one unless portability is important (hard to beat the LB there). If you decide you don't like it, it has very good resale value due to its popularity.

I wouldn't base any decision around clogged screens, you can clean any screen, not just the VB ceramic, I have been using the same Ti screen for amost a year. There are so many threads like this lately you might want to just use the search function and lurk for a while to make a decision on your own.

I would take stinkmeaner's advice, so you know exactly what to expect of each vape, and how each differs. And anyways, whatever vape you end up getting will have a whole bunch of people that know all the tips and tricks of each one, including trouble shooting if you run in to problems.
Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of people here who medicate, and will be here to support ya. Hope you enjoy getting into the "vaporist" lifestyle. Before long you'll probably have at least another vaporizer or accessory like a bong adapter. Believe me.

Well you see I'm only 19, and I'm headin off to college next year, so I'm still livin with my parents right now. For some reason though, they're not cool with me smoking, even though I've tried to tell them I smoke medicinally. So basically, if they find anything its gonna cause problems. Even though I could probably find a way to hide a larger, whip-based vape like the DBV, it would be much easier with the launch box. And the lower price of the LB is sounding good right now too.

I'm thinkin about usin the LB for a while, and then possibly buying like a DBV later in college. Really, the only thing that's keeping me from buying the LB at this point, is that I'm worried it won't get me as high as the DBV, or other whip-style vape will. You say whip-based vapes give bigger, more bong-like hits, and that tends to make me think they'll get me higher, cuz I take really big bong hits... or I used to, before I stopped smoking a week ago . Regardless, I wanted to hear from some LB owners that've had experience with whip-based vapes on my concerns about the LB.

Honestly the LB won't give the monster rips I can get from my SSV whip vape BUT it's effects are felt quickly with only small amounts of material. It really is an amazing little hitter.

It is a great stealth portable too so it would still have a place in your rotation after you get a desktop unit.

I"ve found that the launch box can get me at least as high as any of the whip vapes I've tried. I think this is due to only putting out as much vapor as you can absorb, hence "smaller" hits. Any vapor blown out, like a big visible bong like hit, is wasting all of the vapor you can see. I've actually stopped using my other whip based vapes since having the box.

That worry is completely unfounded and in my opinion the LB will get you more stoned than the DBV with an equal amount of herb.

By the way I own a Launch Box, and man if I had this thing in college my life would have been 100x easier. When I am at my parents' house I use the box in my room all the time. I think it's perfect for a college student--pop in the bathroom stall between classes, take a few hits---what could be better? I am a 20 year old college student, and trying to get vapes and such is crazy stressful haha. In my opinion I would deff use the LB. It's small, portable and your parents would never know. Nope, it's a 4 pc aluminum. Check out the vapes.

Oh, seems like the LB is the only one that comes with the 2 piece and the other ones come with a 4 piece. A little disappointing as I'm just about to buy an LB, but no big deal, I'll probably just buy a separate one later.

Thanks. Puffitup comes with a 4-piece aluminum grinder, and I checked vapeworld and it only comes with a 3-piece acrylic. I'm a little worried about the quality of the grinder from puffitup though. I've heard that cheap aluminum grinders like that start to deposit little aluminum shavings in the bud after some use. Not sure what everybody's opinion on that is. Also what websites are those coupons good for? Thanks

About the MFLB

This is all in my opinion, which is almost needless to say... but I don't think the MFLB is that great of a choice for you at all. I like mine for what it is and how often i use it (not very, only when i need to be totally stealthy). Here's my reasons why:

-Not a good first vape: The hits are thin and inconsistent compared to most vapes. Some will be incredibly thin and you'll wonder if its working at all, some (towards the end of the trench esp) will be so harsh on the throat that you'll think its smoke. The LBs vary themselves too, i have 2 and one runs a lot cooler than the other. Its just not a exact science with the LB, you need to be able to taste/sense/feel the vapor as your hitting it so you know if youre doing it right, and without some previous exp with other vapes, thats gonna be hard to do. I think that, coming from smoking, the hits the LB provides may seem so weak that it could put you off to vaporizing in general (I'm not just making this up, i had a friend try my LB and he thought it sucked so vaporizing must suck too. A month or so later he actually tried my SSV and got more stoned than he's ever been b4.... take it for what its worth)

-Not a good only vape: I can take herb i vaped in either of my LBs and get easily 3x as much vapor out of it in my silver surfer. This obviously means that it is not thoroughly vaping the herb, at least nowhere near as well as teh SSV can. If someone ONLY had the LB they would have ABV with much more to offer, you need another vape to get that out, unless you plan on making edible or something... meh. Also, as you mentioned, you will have to make sure you have a FULLY charged battery at hand in order to get ideal hits out of it. The company has been talking about a power adapter for a while, but its been so long, who knows when it will actually release. Even then, the other problems will still be present.

-Not so smooth: as i mentioned, when you get vapor off the LB, it can feel harsh. This is largely due to the fact that the LB uses conduction (direct physical heat transfer) rather than convection (heating through airflow) which the other 2 vapes use. The herb in the LB that is touchign the screen will get vaporized and the parts that arent wont. This is why ppl say grind your herb as fine as possible and shake so often. No matter how much you do this, the herb wont be vaporized as evenly as it would iwth convection, you taste the burnt-popcorn flavor of ABV a lot sooner than other vapes. This, combined with the fact that there is a very short path between tthe heatsource and your lips means that the vapor will not be as cooled as it would be after passing through a 3ft hose (and optional waterbong adapter)


About the DBV:

I started with a DBV and i think it was a really good beginners vape - it uses convection, it has a clean air path, and it delivered big hits from teh first inhale i took off it the day i got it in the mail. Totally sold me on vaporization. There were some things with it i didnt like however:

-the angle: Yes, herb WILL fall out of the bowl and into the heatercover, onto the heating element and it will burn, if you bump the DBV while the wands plugged in or if anyone accidentally blows in the whip (its much easier to do than it sounds, 2 of my friends have done it) or even breaths/talks with it close to their mouth b4 they hit it.

-the hot spot: At least with the DBV i had, if you put the wand in and take a big hit and then look in the bowl, there will be one spot (usually towards the bottom side of the bowl) that will be noticeably darker than the rest. Even with frequent stirring (after every hit even) you will notice the taste of ABV early on because of this. You could twist the bowl during your hit (like you do with the silver surfer) to kinda tumble it and let that hot spot touch all surface area evenly, but that is hard to do because of my next complaint...

-the ground glass: Oh, its so great, because it frees up a hand, right? Wrong. The wand gets stuck in the heatercover sometimes, even if you dont twist it in very much. Gets hard to remove it and sometimes while you're trying to you might accidentally dump herb in the heatercover. Its a real pain to stir the bowl after every hit like you should to maintain best flavor with the ground glass connection. After so many times of it getting stuck, you'll start to just put in really loosely, but then it will slip out easily, sometime sjust from the weight of the tubing. I used the hand the ground-glass connection of the DBV freed up to punch myself for not going with my first decision and getting the DBVs slightly more expensive, american-made brother (SSV). I've also heard of otehr DBV owners breaking wands/heatercovers and heating elements trying to get their bowls out.


It was for these reasons that I sold my DBV and bought a silver surfer with a standard (non-ground glass) heatercover/wand set. The angle of the SSV makes it so NO HERB EVER has dumped into the heater cover. If you get the standard connection like i did, the heatercover has a much smaller hole so blowing herb into it is really hard to do, in fact i would say impossible to do accidentally. This narrower opening DOES translate into a narrower stream of air and therefor if you just hold your bowl up to it and start inhaling, it will vape some parts more than others too. But with the SSV wand and how its designed, you twist and work the bowl during your hit to direct the stream of air to all parts of the bowl. Much easier to stir after each hit w/o having to wrestle with the ground glass. SSV bowls also taste good up until near the very end, no ABV taste early on like with the LB and DBV.

As far as teh vaporbros, i've never owned/used one so i cant say for sure. But i chose the DBV over it because they seem to function the same way, only the VB has an even less ideal of an angle to it.

So there you have it, my ... actually i think that was more like $.10 at least

But anyways, i'm not trying to bash the LB or the DBV, they both (esp the dbv) got be vaked plenty of times and they do their job, just not without some issues. I couldnt think of a better PORTABLE vape than the LB (but i can easily imagine how one could be made). I'm just trying to save you from having to learn about these things the hard way. I would have saved myself a decent amount of money if i would have just forked over for the ssv right off the bat.

You might also want to look into the Herbalaire 2.1 and the Purple Days (and WDZ/MZ + other log vapes like PD). I havent tried either, but they are well liked by the members who own them on this forum. I plan on ordering a HA in the near future (not because i'm unsatisfied with my current vapes though this time, i just want a bag filler and something rugged for in teh car).

Thanks. Puffitup comes with a 4-piece aluminum grinder, and I checked vapeworld and it only comes with a 3-piece acrylic. I'm a little worried about the quality of the grinder from puffitup though. I've heard that cheap aluminum grinders like that start to deposit little aluminum shavings in the bud after some use. Not sure what everybody's opinion on that is. My bad I guess I was a little too vaked to post it's from www.vapeworld.com. I heard that the lb is a 3 piece, but all others are 4 pc ones.

I never had herb fall onto my heat cover (except for maybe a spec here and there) and I have an Extreme Q. Personally, I would go with either a VaporTower or the EQ. A verticle set-up is much better in my opinion because heat rises and warming up your herbs will happen quicker (this is just a theory). Also no chance for your GonG bowl to fall off (this is a fact). I would go with either one, with a nod going towards the EQ because of its bag/fan option, and digital readout.

So I made my final decision tonight, and just bought the launch box. Cheap, efficient, stealthy, its everything I need. I bought it off vapeworld.com and got a medium sized space case titanium two-piece grinder with it. I had enough money to get a large one (but not enough to get a 4-piece), but the large two-piece grinders are 3 1/2 inches wide!! which is just unnecessarily big in my opinion. Thats like the size of a grapefruit. This weekend after I (hopefully) receive it on friday, I'm gonna take a trip up to best buy and buy a 15-minute energizer charger + battery combo pack for $40. Pricey, but its worth bein able to vape in 15 minutes if I have no charged batteries. Anyways, thanks for the help everybody, couldn't have made the decision so quickly without you.
