Official Goodnight Thread.........

Being on disability, and having all this free time for the time being, my night owl nature comes out in full force. I'll be back at 4 am to say nite nite, lol. Great thread idea, though.

I'm the lightweight, in bed by 10 PM most nights, up at the 'Butt Crack' of dawn as Pammy calls it.

Crap, . . . . first light... it's over.
Makes me sleepy in the evening.
Makes me wide awake in the morning. :horse:

i tend to go to sleep around 3am sharp give or take. i work largely at night so it's not an issue but there's something about waking up early that seems very healthy.
i am considering the purchase of an alarm clock; can anyone recommend a good ipod alarm clock - i'd like to wake up to sublime raga music...

iHomes are fairly decent iPod alarm clocks. Great prices, too. Haven't looked at reviews in a while so there may be better options, but I've had mine for 5 years and it never fails.

well i had bought an "imode" and the sound quality is pretty good for what it is, but i think either the settings are unreliable or the instruction manual is pretty crap - i imagine the iHome is probably about the same. if i could remember how to do it, i got the best results both sound wise and reliability wise by using the alarm clock setting on the Nano and hooking it directly to my bedroom stereo - old style receiver and small bookshelf speakers. in fact i would say the sound quality is superb, just as good as CDs.

jeffp, get the Sony Dream Machine if you can... I've read many many reviews on iPod alarm clocks and this one doubles as a fairly feature-rich alarm clock and a high-quality iPod speaker. Cleanest, fullest sound and deepest bass I've ever heard come out of something that small. Check it out, you can't go wrong!

hey thanks matty...
i recommend if you can and haven't yet, hook up your ipod to a real stereo system, I think you'll be impressed as long as the bit rate is high.
Requires a radio shack grade y connector, the sound is pleasant in a way different than cds, in a way the same as cds.

I have a decent consumer-level computer speaker setup... Being a musician one of my greatest abilities is judging quality of tone and sound... Really good relative pitch. I can tell if a record is playing a bit too fast just from recognizing other recordings, etc. I've dicked around with my speakers enough that I feel comfortable it's reproducing alright.

My turntable rig needs a bit of work but overall it works great... Got all my parents' albums from the 80s. some good stuff from before, but a lot of crapola.

Sony Dream Machine. Best alarm clock for iPod dock I'd say. Or at least way up there. My only complaint is minor... the display is a tad bright, but I'm the type of person who enjoys absolutel darkness in my room at night. So it's probably nothing to someone else.

Matty, the Dream Machine has good reviews regarding sound quality, as you say.
I'll probably pick one up at some point...

It has these two modes, MegaBass and MegaXpand (sp?) that essentially are EQ boosters that pump up the bass and scoops it a little bit and boosts the signal (so far as I can tell)... results in a really crisp, rich sound. Even I'm impressed at the bass these little speaks pump out. You can't go wrong, ESPECIALLY if it's just a clock radio you'll be using it for. You could use these out on a patio or wherever. And it's got a little, albeit cheap, remote. One of those little flat ones with the round buttons all the way down, generic.

Good morning...
Well last night I used the iPod's own alarm clock function, hooked it up to my bedroom stereo - pristine 70's receiver and Dynaco speakers (90's model, not great; not as good as the a25's but OK) and plugged in the iPod via a y cable connection.
Woke up to Massive Attack.
Very nice. Waking up to actual *high fidelity* - this is great.
The only downside to doing it this way is that you have to maintain a charge on your iPod - the real alarm clocks charge your iPod while you're sleeping.
However, the sound quality has to be so much better through a real stereo.

If you do that Jeff, just get an iPod charger and plug it in while the alarm clock is set.

Not a bad idea, might have to try that myself :D

actually that is a great idea.
in fact.... since you don't really need much hard drive space for the purpose of an alarm clock playlist, down the line it might be a good idea to purchase a second smaller iPod as an alarm clock always connected to the stereo - certainly not a vital purchase - however I think you'll find that the sound quality through a good stereo will be very impressive to your ears upon awakening after a vape session.

luckily I have my old 4G iPod colour and my current 5.5G 80GB video...

The only downside to using my vintage stereo... and it's a big one: I don't want to leave the receiver on 24/7. I made the mistake of doing that after a listening session one time and it caused something inside the receiver to keep blowing fuses. It turned out it was a problem that had been occurring since I bought the receiver at a garage sale, but I don't want to risk it again. Besides, those things draw a good chunk of power, I don't want to risk fire from the heat it's giving off. At the very least, it's going to pop the power bill up slightly.

Wow, what a shitty day... Spilled a Large Iced Capp and a Medium hot chocolate all over my car while driving, ended up being out $10 because I was just picking up the coffees for some coworkers...

Then this guy who is supposed to call me back about some amazing vintage speakers he needs to get rid of, doesn't get back to me which worries me.

Now I spill vaped pot all over myself. This night has been so shitty, I decided to smoke for the first time in a long time. Hence coming to the goodnight thread.

Goodnight.

Hope your day is picking up Mattybass - what vintage speakers are you planning on receiving? My favorite old speakers are the Dynaco a-25's.

Great old speakers, jeff. Gonna add to those:
Dahlquist DQ10s
Stacked Advents
Rogers LS3/5a's
DCM Time Windows
KLH 9's
Quad ESL's
Original Magnapans

I've just been transported to hi-fi heaven. :)

I've never heard DCM Time Windows but I owned a set of Time Frames which were good but I felt the bass was wanting, gave them away to my nephew.
Currently running a set of AR 302's which are very decent, through an old Hafler setup.
Not quite audiophile but upper consumer level, I would say.
Audiogon is a great site to find higher end audio equipment often at a song, as these guys are so anal about their stereos and apparently so wealthy, they just seem to want to dump their existing setups
every few years to upgrade from within the audiophile community rather than go to Ebay.
Actually with the exception of my power amp which is a Hafler clone of the 220 made from Hafler parts - again from Audioon - my entire stereo is used, which is fine.

One of the things on my to do list is find a replacement single well CD player - not so easy to do anymore, which is strange, isn't it?

Well I had the day off today, decided to finally pop open my Sansui G-5500 receiver and see if I could challenge myself to replace the lightbulbs. I managed to locate and desolder them as they were indeed burnt out.

What should I find later but my package of record cleaning supplies arrived from the States! Got a stylus brush, stylus tracking force gauge, RCA Discwasher D4+ brush and two bottles of the cleaner, and 100 clean inner sleeves.

But five minutes ago the dude messaged me back saying all the speakers were sold ... should have seen that coming. I was literally going to be getting his Celestion SL12si's, DCM TimeFrame-700s, Kenwood LS-770s and Sony 7300 ULM's for $20 a pair! I knew it had to be too good to be true... practically in my grasp! Oh well.

Still a pretty successful day when all my Supertramp records are getting their first bath in 25 years.

I wish The Canuck Audio Mart was halfway as good as AudiogoN... All the Canadian guys do is try to rip you off for shitty 80s gear. And none of it is in Alberta to boot.
