Gear Slug .33 Rosin Forge

no, you would have to have cool your Slug.33 to the same/ambient temps. before beginning a new press. You can do this with ice water bath. Its not the most ideal, but then again they were never designed for rapid repeat use.
We are working on that now with our 1/2oz unit. It will have a removable Steel inner sleeves that can be pre loaded, then placed in the Hot SLUG.33 before the press. It will be fully electric, with either a polyimide heater or silicone strap heater like the Limax. Repeat use, all day, 1/2oz at a time will be nice.

I know that pistol format infrared thermometers (?) exist, and I expect it would be exceedingly difficult to handle one of those AND a torch, but wouldn’t it be possible for a helper, armed with the thermometer, to gauge the slugs temp from the OPPOSITE side, for an extra data point?

Your point, NBD, on the Slug not being intended for ‘production work’, is why I have my eyes set on the fat Mac...not that I want to go into production, but because I’d rather run it once a month or so than much more often. This is due to living arrangements and the logistical challenges.

Hmm, I’ve been thinking up some questions for you, Doctor. One is about the smell: fill us in, please, it must smell some, but etc.

Watching your videos, I notice that your flame seems to be a blue needle 2-3cm long, and its tip rides about 1.0 cm from the Slug. You typically direct it steadily at a point less than 1.0 cm from the top; you hold the torch with an impressively steady hand. How does this reflect what you’re trying to do? I’m sure that there are reasons for varying (mass), so would you expound on it a bit, please?

I also notice from the videos that you never tell how MUCH goo you got from any pressing. I understand not wanting to manipulate expectations, and some folks are probably yield-crazy, but there’s not enough data on that for my mind to work with, in terms of conceptualizing the value. I know 20% of one gram would be scant, but that’s more vague than I’m comfortable with: could you expand on this aspect as well, please?

Been looking. None of them are tight fitting so far. I have welders gloves but handling the slug with those would be like wearing clown shoes on a tight rope.
Sorry to hear that...my hands are big, so almost all gloves are tight-fitting for me.

Even so, it’s never so hot you can’t move it without protection, and that little sleeve might not work out using a toaster oven, but even a regular kitchen hot pad should be fine for purposeful movements from A to B. I’m in the kitchen all the time, and I frequently handle things of that temperature. Safety, for sure, but nothing to be scared about

@ClearBlueLou We used infra red hand held laser thermometers to gauge temperatures yes.
flame size is not as important as how long you heat with the size flame you have. (measuring now) I would say the flame is right at 2" with the whippet torches we recommend. (they are adjusted to max) I think the flame looks smaller on video.
Keeping the torch steady at the rear of the slug.33 prevents heating beneath the flower directly. Although the slug.33 is very thick we feel it's beneficial to heat away from the flower material and drive it away from the heat source. This allow the heat to gradually creep up to the end of the Forge where the flower will meet it and the extraction process can begin at the coolest part of the forge.

You are right ive never really weighed out an extraction right afterwards on film. Not sure why, there are Plenty of pictures on instagram of 30% yeilds, 15% to 20 is more common. With so many customers out there now, all over the world have experienced 30% yields using their .33's I wonder if there is even a point anymore. Yield is more about the flower than the equipment.
Smell? yes some.. terps be smelling when you pressing.
Peace!

Excellent. Thank you!

So you’re heating the “upper” part of the cylinder AND the shaft, and when you’re done heating the heat has spread toward and surrounded the herb, and the hot shaft bring down more heat with the pressure...thanks, I think I get it now.

I get that, but I have nothing to build a scale by...I’ve never seen a known gram of any concentrate, or any other quantity, just received dabs from time to time and glad to have ‘em. I know 0.2g is not much, but if if saw it on a paper before me as goo, I’d have no idea how much it was, I’d probably try to figure how many dabs were there and then give up. Yes, ancient stoner is stone ignorant on the point.

Smell? yes some.. terps be smelling when you pressing.
Peace!
And unto you, peace! So not the heady aroma of decarbing herb?

Thanks so much for your answers!

My Slug .33 Deuce showed up today. Wow! Even after knowing the measurements of it beforehand I am amazed at how tiny it really is. It looks much bigger in the videos. Mine is used so it’s not perfect but the machining is top notch and the hot strap seems like it will work perfect.

My vise will be here on Tuesday and I hope the seep kit comes soon. I can’t wait to try this thing out!

Congrats! I’m gonna have to wait another couple weeks, but yeah, so what.

with respect, brother, I disagree: given the low temperature and short duration, I'd say that no significant decarbing occurs. If not vaping, I'd recommend using a Nova or such to decarb your pressings

I dunno... I ate part of an early rosin chip one time and was pretty loopy.

I have tried the Deuce and haven’t had a lot of luck yet. I have been getting horrible blow outs and very little rosin. I think I know the problem. I think my scales are reading wrong and causing me to load too much into it.
I may just throw this up on the classifieds here for what I have into it and put the money toward my big press. It’s pretty nice and the vise cleaned up well but still not sure it’s for me.

To be fair to @Nattybushdoctor i have not tried very hard to make this work right yet as I ordered a big press and kind of lost interest. I also don’t care for having to measure a specific amount to press. It is all on me and nothing to do with the Deuce I am sure.

I do have a new set of scales and a seep kit coming in the next few days so if I don’t sell it I will try again.

Listed on eBay. Am I allowed to put a link here?

Bummer.......Im sorry to hear you had such shitty luck with it. I wish you would have called me or texted me or emailed me so I could help. If you you decide to give it another wack let me know!
Thanks & Peace

if you can follow directions to bake a batch of cookies you can achieve great results with any slug33

EDIT:

I see your ebay listing. Your deuce seems to be missing the copper colored washer and the seep kit?

:)
I think he said the washer and seep kit was on its way in the mail.

It is missing. It is in the mail.

It will be included.

I don’t bake well lol. In all fairness I was not using an accurate scale and I hate measuring.

It’s not the fault of the Deuce. It’s me. It’s just not really what I am looking for. I got decent rosin but I know I was loading too much by the way it acted.

@Nattybushdoctor all of the tech advice in the world won’t help with a scale weighin in an extra .3. I guess I just want to be able to press one nug at a time or a whole bunch and the slug is not tailored for either. It is perfect for a batch or two at a time. I don’t like to bake either but I can cook like mad. Random measuring works better for me. Haahahaha

If anyone here wants to try one out for cheap I will knock 20 bucks off for FC members. I am not making a cent, I am losing money but that’s cool if I can pass it along to someone here.
