What should you say to the Dr. for an MJ license in Colorado?

---Sorry mods if this has been posted before. I checked the first five pages and couldn't figure out any good search terms for this topic.---


I live in Colorado and the dispensaries are opening up like crazy out here. The dispensaries are also dropping their cosultation fees, quickly. In the last year 3 have opened in town and over 10 are now operating in the valley. The original consultation fee was $200 + the $90 license but some places have dropped as low as $70 + $90 license. Considering the constant deals of $30 to $35 an 1/8, I would end up getting my money back within a few months.

I have read that it is 'recommended' that you bring 2-3 reports from other doctors that mention the pain that you have been having. I can do this but frankly I don't want to spend the extra money and time to get these other doctors to check my hands and hips, which really do hurt most of the time.

Other than bringing in reports about past examinations, are there certain things I should say?

I just don't want to get turned down for a license and be out the money I payed for the consultation. I don't think it is likely to get turned down but I would like to hear some advice on the proper way of interacting with the doc when trying to get legal.

So, any advice? Is it important to mention the amount of advil I eat every day like candy? Should I mention cramping in my hand or focus on the pain in my hips and knuckles? Should I spend more time on muscle pain?

I was wondering if I could bring my old pill jars, with the prescription written on them to the meeting with the MMJ doc. I wonder if that is enough to prove that I have had difficulties for some time now.

Prolly not. They (and the state) need to see documented ongoing treatment for the illness at hand. Every year when we renew we have to go through the same bullshit.

I'm not in Colorado but here goes;

-bring a list of all prescriptions that you can remember having had.
-to the extent appropriate (and I don't know on which basis you are applying) bring any 'recent' pill bottles pertinent to your application for a license.
-mention, without being over dramatic, how your condition has impacted you (perhaps personally, perhaps at work).
-be honest about your marijuana use. If you have time write up a patient history, perhaps dating back a few months, as to how you've used marijuana and how it has impacted you. Mention how it has helped you.
-have plausible reasons as to why you may not want to take other medications for your condition. I can't answer what a plausible reason for your doctor might be, but harm reduction is never a bad thing to bring up if pressed for a reason.

(Oh yeah I also had a legal release of liability form; most doctors in Canada won't even listen to you unless you have one).

tdavie and dgj- Thank you for your responses, that was ver thoughtful. I found some older documentation that I recieved from an MRI and I have prescriptions. I am hoping that's enough. I wil type up my own patient history but I don't know how serious the doctor will take it.

I have never heard of a release of liability form, so I guess I'll have to look it up.

Is there anyone from Colorado that can weigh in on this discussion. Not just for me, but anyone that lives in Colorado and is aprehensive about getting a license.

@Gatsby A patient history can be useful esp. if the doctor is looking for 'regular' usage in the sense that it is being used for medicinal purposes and not just on Friday evenings (as an example). It certainly can't hurt other than occupying your time in creating one. I maintain and update my cannabis use once per week.

Go to this place and you will not need to bring any medical records and you WILL leave with your card unless things have changed recently ( 98% sure they have not )

Survivalism- I guess it may be time to make a trip to Denver. It'll be a tough choice for me. There are so many Dr.s and dispensaries where I live. One of them is only $70 for an appointment. It sounds like Karmaceuticals is a sure thing though. I really don't want to go in for an appointment and get the run around. That would piss me off.

I saw an add in the paper today and called to find out what the deal is, and I was tols that all I had to do was set up a video conference with a guy in Dillon. I don't even have to meet with him. I will think about this option too. Far less driving that way.

Anyway, should I say anything specific if I go to Karmaceuticals?

I am pretty sure the charge at karma is $70 for the doctor and notary, you then have 90 days to pay the state $90. Email me and ill send you the number if you are going to go down their, just call and tell them you would like to set up an appointment with the doctor and they will give you a time and tell you what you need to bring.

Karma will not make you designate them as your caregiver either, though if you do you get special pricing like pretty much any other dispensary around.

Dont know if you know this but after you get your card you can buy from any dispensary ( i think some are private and you can only buy from them if you designate them as your caregiver though.. im not sure )

Survivalism- I had no idea about the primary caregiver thing and completely unaware about private dispensaries.

If I designate a place as a primary caregiver, can I still buy somewhwere else?

Yes you can still buy at most other places even if you have designated a different one as your caregiver.

You will get a temporary paper card that day that will allow you to enter and buy from dispensaries, then after you send the $90 to the state they will send you your real plastic card.

You have already been so helpful I thought I would ask you another question. I am trying to do all of this surreptitiously. I just don't feel like it is anyone elses business but mine... even the mailman.

Do you remember what the letter with the MMJ license from Colorado looks like? Is it obvious that the letter is about MJ?

I actually have yet to send in my information so im not 100% sure on what everything is labled as, i am pretty sure that the envelope will not say anything involving medical marijuana though.

I am officially licensed. I need to shop around and select a primary caregiver before I get my application notorized and send it in. The doctor gave me a number of a grower that is willing to be my caregiver in exchange for free MJ. I might not have to pay for it ever again. Woohoo
