Parchment paper question for rosin tek

I believe some use silicone and I also believe you want to avoid those. Again, I believe, most use some kind of vegetable coating for non-stick properties.

I'm not 100% on that so perhaps someone will verify.

People are using PTFE slick sheets but my understanding is the rosin really doesn't stick to that so there is some care that needs to be taken when using it. Parchment paper is used in ovens at fairly high temperatures and you can see the paper start to turn brown where it is exposed to the hot air in the oven, but the food that is being cooked above doesn't discolor the same. Even the discolored parchment still retains it's non-stick properties.

When pressing, our paper is not getting up to those high temperatures, in some cases not even half of those temperatures. So, for the quick time that we are using parchment paper at the temperatures that we do, I seriously doubt there is any of the silicone treatment on the parchment leaching off into our dabs.

Long term storage of concentrates on parchment is a topic of debate. FWIW, it wasn't until early 2017 that my caregiver's concentrate producer switched over from parchment packaged dabs in stink proof zip bags to glass lip balm jars with childproof caps.

I wouldn't be concerned with parchment paper and your rosin when used within our standards of pressing. Just be sure to collect the rosin as soon as possible and transfer it into a container you are comfortable using.

Most parchment is silicone coated. Uncoated would tear and the alternative is Quillon, not an alternative. It comes bleached or unbleached. Bleached contains dioxins at around 20-40ppb.

We press at a fraction of the temperature to melt silicone.

Silicone takes time to swell with terpenes. It is an issue with long term storage. The effect on the paper is obvious and does not occur while pressing. The only objective data I have seen is a study that documented swelling of silicone parts used in the storage of limonene. No mention of dissolving.

Stable dry budders, shatter or pull and snap is fine in parchment for a week at room temperature, 30+ days refrigerated or vacuum sealed and frozen. Other textures as a result of high terpene content can bleed in a few days. High moisture content can produce a similar effect.

Glass is preferable, some jars come with a teflon lid liner. Other wise FEP or PTFE, both are very inert.

So has anybody tried thick tracing paper?
It seems very strong and slick.
I dripped some melting wax on it and it popped off when cold but seemed to leave a very thin sheen on the surface of the paper.
Don't know if the rosin would or not.
Anybody try this?
Won't have my slug for another few weeks.
Was also concidering a thin sheet of ss but wondered if that surface would react to the terps..probably.
If the tracing paper isn't toxic it sure looks like it might work. .

Parchment is for Baking and Eating off of because you can digest the wax film that comes off the parchment. Parchment was NEVER meant to be Inhaled via Smoking sticky extracts off of it! Be Safe and Do your Research, Parchment is COPD waiting to Happen!

Parchment is the safest option. It’s food safe.

Below 200-250°C parchment paper should be safe, as it is advertised for baking up to these temperatures depending on brand.

So, as long as you vaporize your rosin, all should be safe anyway.

I would like to see a paper or something that investigates what happens with silicone when heated further.
And I would like to see an analysis of a rosin that is effectively contaminated with silicone.
I only keep hearing of interactions of silicone with terpenes, but I would like to hear if a contamination has ever really happened from parchment paper.

If you use it only for pressing, the contact time is pretty short, so chances of quantities of silicone getting dissolved into the rosin are pretty small.

COPD is something everyone that enjoys inhaling would like to avoid, and is a serious health issue. I think it is good to raise these questions @ParchmentCOPD.

Is there any comparison of oilslick paper and other parchments for squishing rosin?

A few things,

Parchment paper is coated with silicone or quillon, not wax.

No one uses quillon.

You seem a little confused and, whats the word, touched.

I think it a big assumption to think you're getting much off of the particular type of parchment paper when you use it for concentrates. But even if you did, when I read the datasheets for Quilon, there does not seem a big toxicity. While it could be an irritant when breathed as a vapor, the first aid is to stop breathing it. Do you have some basis for your...um...fervent belief?

And in the follow-up video he says explicitly it's not the parchment... He goes on to say the particulates are seen in flower rosin, but not in hash/sift rosin.

EDIT: So actually, there is just reduced particulate matter in the hash rosin vs flower. At the end of this video he confirms it's just plant waxes/lipids, but still nothing to do with parchment.

There is something keeping it from sticking to the paper so when you pull it off I see that it must take this non stick coating with it? Top of the concentrate looks clear but when pulled from the paper the bottom looks filmy???????

Right on just always have been concerned about the no stick coating that comes off with snap and pull type concentrates. There is something keeping it from sticking to the paper so when you pull it off I see that it must take this non stick coating with it? Top of the concentrate looks clear but when pulled from the paper the bottom looks filmy???????


Cook some brownies and look at the bottom surface of a brownie. Super smooth and filmy... it’s just brownie man. :)
