Boundless Tera

I cannot help it. The Tera still gives me slight headaches after each and every use. Something I do not get from ANY of my other vaporizers. And there is still some not-so-nice taste left that seems not to go away. I will no longer use it and ask Vaposhop for another return. I need my brain (who would have thought that) and I do not vape to get headaches. What an utter disappointment this device is... :(

Well... Off gassing here too... I posted the following on the Boundless reddit page, and I politely ask others with issues to post there as well so they can get an idea of how widespread this is or isn't. Anyhow, this is what I posted on reddit:

New off-gassing issue, please respond Boundless.

Eric, others at Boundless, customers, Tera users.

Last week I was over the moon, having received my new Tera. Then I got worried over Teflon. Eventually I accepted the explanations and decided to use my Tera. Then new reports of off-gassing popped up and slowly more people are reporting the same. (Mostly on /r/vaporents and FC.) Now I do as well.

I got my Tera through Vaposhop. I trust them and I know they'll take care of me. I sadly feel as if the tipping point for trust in Boundless and specifically the Tera has come though. Today is a holiday here, but come Monday I will contact Vaposhop and start the process of returning my Tera.

Honestly, I hate feeling like this is the only option because the promise was there for the Tera. It was going to be an awesome vape, the best I could get for the money, a total beast. Except for all these issues that popped up with the original, and now with the replacement.

Boundless, I think you need to address the most recently discovered off-gassing issue as soon as you can, as well as as openly and honestly as you can. I believe you guys have the best intentions and I don't want to see your company fail, but I fear you will if the current silence continues. I've lost trust in the Tera, at least in its current state. Maybe after a complete redesign and big changes in the production and testing phase it might return, but I see no fast resolution anymore.
Many people have already given up on the Tera, some are now also reporting off-gassing on other Boundless units (CFX) and your reputation -regardless of how super nice and well willing you are- is suffering hard, the longer this drags on.

Please, take our health concerns as serious as you did before, please address this and better yet, bring a permanent fix, even if it means taking the Tera off the shelves and starting from scratch.

Hopefully I will be able to enjoy your products again in the future without worries. For now, I'm sadly going to figure out what to replace the Tera with.

Ps. For those wondering: confirmed new production unit, clean bowl yet still off-gassing. I might try and shoot some video evidence if I get around to it, though others have already shared their pics and vids that show the issue.

Heat is certainly retained by the stainless steel bowl though.

of course when the unit is in active operation but my point is that in video air is not being pulled across the element and through the bowl so any residue or crumbs in the bowl should not be of issue in this instance.

No doubt i will be waiting on trying this vape out for a while.

All the off gassing issues are making me paranoid so I did three more burn offs on Concentrate Mode this morning. No breaks in between, 5 minute session each. I did mouth draws (no inhale) every minute (how else can a person do this without using their mouth?) and did not see any off gassing. I tried numerous backgrounds and still saw nothing. Sucks that I need to worry about this with a brand new vape.

I did another session after all that with a doping capsule (0.125 g) and this time I used the glass mouth piece. I did the same temperature steps I did before and again the last three draws were harsh. The five before that were excellent, tasty and smooth. It may be a little easier to draw air, not really sure. Did not seem any difference with the first few draws, possibly easier with the last three draws. The glass did get hotter - not lip burning hot but I definitely could tell it was getting warmer.

My next session I will try flipping back and forth between the two mouth pieces. They are easily swopped as it is just a magnet holding them (it is definitely secure though - never feels like the mouth piece will fall out even using S&B doping capsules). I am not sure why I have not tried swopping back and forth before this - seems really obvious now. Since I am not enjoying the last three draws at temperatures above 200 C, I will stay at a constant 176 C and see how that affects later draws. Need my Mobius to arrive so I can finally check out the WPA.

After the doping capsule cooled off (pain opening after a session) I checked the ABV and it was the same as before - a toasty light brown colour. Definitely saving the ABV for later. So far the Boundless Tera has been very consistent - all results have been identical with each session. After the 9 Concentrate sessions I have done and three stepped flower sessions my batteries are now at about 25%. Batterie life appears to be reasonable to me. I have ordered two more LG HG2 20a 18650 batteries from Amazon so I can swop in the future.

And since I am now paranoid, I will do three more five-minute Concentrate sessions tomorrow before I do another flower session.

Will this be a problem for all Teras or just select few? I really like the vape itself and the features and would love to be able to use it. :(

Wow. I have really wanted Boundless to be a success as I like those guys (well, I don't know them personally but I do like them from communications and live streams) and they seemed to understand how to make a good but moderately priced portable vape.

But this Tera thing seems like a real warm mess.

Question to people with new Tera's who have seen off-gassing...well, question with a bit of preparatory verbiage, to wit: we often advise folks to do a burn off of all vapes just to be safe and in order to remove any residual manufacturing oils, etc from production. We don't seem to get too upset about having to do this and once burn offs are complete we seem to be generally happy going forward with using the vape in question.

The issue with the OG Tera was that the off-gassing never stopped (and was pretty dang thick in vids I saw). That is, it wasn't a matter of just cleaning the unit up a bit prior to live use.

My question to folks with off-gassing new units, which situation are we in here. Is it continual off-gassing with what appears to be no end in sight or is this normal burn-off type situation except that we are all very sensitized to Tera material issues and off-gassing?

Cheers

Zero off gassing from my Tera. I’ve run it in concentrate mode 5 cycles and haven’t seen or smelled any fumes. I’ve taken some dry pulls off it at temp and didn’t get any WTF tastes or effects. I can’t speak to how it might work with herb, I can’t smoke for another 10 months till I retire. So it will sit in the closet till then. The unit seems safe to me. I look forward to using it.

They need to do a much better job with their Quality Control. I was honestly shocked that the CF or CFX did not gain this kind of traction when these units off-gas and the plastics cracking like crazy after using it for a bit. I'm pretty experienced with the CF/CFX since so many of my friends have it and the main issue is always cracking plastic and it stops working after a while. I'm starting to suspect the material they use it with whether it's the plastic casing or something else is not supposed to be heated to that level and when it is, it will start off-gassing, crack, and eventually break. Then again, the average consumer does not look at these things and if it produces vapor/smoke, they are okay with it. This industry needs to be more carefully regulated and it's a very gray area. It should honestly be illegal to sell vapes that causes any kind of risk to our health. That's why folks... you should always do your research, trust brands that have been in the industry for a while and understand the logic behind the inner workings of these vaporizers.

P.S. Materials used in these Chinese manufactured vapes (SMISS) are extremely similar to the materials used in replica vapes. It's unreal when you actually buy a replica vape from DHGate to compare and it's like the same.

EDIT:

Here's a video I just took of my CFX off-gassing. I've had it for I think two years now and haven't really used it due to this issue.

Right, I was just posing that if someone ran a bowl through it, then emptied it out, they’d likely see some vapor from whatever residue is left in there.

Well, this is my view.

The off-gassing doesn't look as bad as the OG Tera (if I remember correctly, it was more of a dark colour). This time is more of a white wisp.

Tbh, it looks like the issue I ask Boundless about here. My unit was brought from @PuffItUp in November 2017.

I got a quick response from Eric at first, but after I sent pictures and emails, he stopped responding.

I noticed this on reddit today, and its the same sort of smoke that I get out of mine, and what appears like the same smoke that comes out of the Tera.

So, I think somethings changed with one of the components used, and it looks like it could effect more than one SKU.

I wanna love Boundless, but they're making it hard tbh, specially when you go dark whenever issues arise.

I only started seeing this issue for only a day or so. We should give them at least a day to come up with a genuine and accurate reply. They seem like people who wants the best for their costumer and the product. Give them time, see what they have to say.

I've been following Boundless for awhile, and you can see by my post history that I've always been in their corner.

But this has happened more than twice...

It does no harm to say "we hear you, we are looking into it".

This isn't some toy you can just stop using. For some, this is a medical device (I had to buy a M18 because I didn't feel safe using my CFX anymore).

I'm one for full transparency, and making your own mistakes and learning from them, but each time there is a problem with a device, we don't hear anything for days (I sent my email a month ago, and asked for an updated a week ago, still nothing).

So I'm pretty active on Reddit and have been lurking here for a while, but someone referenced my Reddit post about the Tera and I thought it was finally time to make an account here and talk about my experience with the Tera.

So, that being said, here we go.
I ordered my Boundless Tera from PiU after I got the email that the new units were officially in stock. As always, Puffitup is amazing and they had crazy fast shipping. I opened the box, charged the batteries, confirmed the updated WPA, and when the batteries were fully charged, I checked for the screen flip to confirm it was in fact the new unit... It was.
I then proceeded to do my burn offs which I did on concentrate mode. There was a slight plastic smell, but no off gassing or anything like that. I figured the plastic smell was essentially a "new car smell." After 3 burn offs, the smell went away and I thought everything was good. (Didn't notice any gases during burn offs.)
That night, I proceeded to load it up with medium grind bud and the flavor was great. Vapor production was stellar and I got high AF. At this point, I was having no issues. I shared the experience with my boyfriend and he was also blown away by how good the Tera was doing... Flavor/vapor production/airflow/etc.
Later in the evening, we ripped through another bowl. Same performance.

The next night, the first bowl worked like the previous ones. It did an awesome job.
(Now at this point, I should probably say how I was using it. I already mentioned that I was using dry herb, and I personally like to start on lower temps. My method is, first 3 pulls are at 365°F, next 2 pulls are at 375°, 2 pulls at 385°, stepping up every 2 pulls until I'm at max temp for dry herbs.)
I don't have concentrates, so the only time I used the concentrate mode was during burn offs. On the 4th and final bowl, I had the temp set at 365°like always. The flavor seemed way off. That was my first indication. On the second hit from the 4th bowl, the favor still seemed off and this time, I exhaled way more cloud than should have been there. It was dense and white, similar to what you would get from an ecig, but not quite the volume of sub ohm clouds. It was definitely not normal. I immediately emptied the bowl and dry swabbed it so that there was no crumbs in the chamber. I heated it up, took a mouth hit, and a cloud of vapor puffed out... More cloud than from a normal packed bowl from any other vape, and the bowl was empty. I started to get a headache, so I stopped all use of it and switched over to another vape. The headache lasted for the rest of the night. The following morning, I did another burn off on concentrate mode and it smelled really bad. After it cooled off, I swabbed the chamber, with ISO and did another burn off. Same off gassing issue. By this time, I had already contacted PiU and they sent me a return label to send it back. Before boxing it up, I unscrewed the bottom plate and swabbed the entire internal air path tube with a qtip. After knowing that the internal air tube was clean and the bowl chamber was ISO cleaned and dry-wiped I did another burn off. It still had the bad smell and light whisps of vapor were coming out. At that point, I had done everything I could to clean it and make it work, but the problem persisted. I boxed everything up and sent it back to PiU. They should be receiving it today. Hopefully they will replace it with a working model. I love my Tera and would hate to see it get recalled a second time. (I never tried the first version.) All in all, when it worked, this device was amazing, but that off gassing is a real issue. The headache was also real. I'm a pretty techy girl, so I don't mind taking things apart to fix an issue. I do it with my racing quads and and gliders all the time, and they have way more engineering in them than a vape. I'm not willing to do a teardown on my own vape as I'm relatively broke, but if anyone has an extra faulty "newer" unit lying around, I can attempt to strip it down to determine what the real issue is. I just don't want to void any warranty that I might have.

Side note: Really sorry this post was so long, I just wanted it to be as detailed as possible since I don't have any video proof. I hope it's not a mass production issue and just a few isolated events.
