Combustion gets you more high?

My friends keep telling me that when you smoke you burn all the components of the herb, not just thc Therefore you get higher than when you vape. Can some one confirm this?

First off let me say that I'm still learning about vaporizing, the effects, and Cannabis in general. I'm using it responsibly as a patient along the guidelines that my physician set for me. Due to me being a non-cigarette smoker he advised me to purchase a vaporizer, he even supplied me with a few distributor's info and discounts. What I know so far about vaporizers is what I've learned here at FC and from various internet sources like Wikipedia etc. the point I'm making is I don't consider myself an authoritative source on these matters, I'm learning just like you.

From what I understand combustion will release more cannabinoids, but in smaller amounts since some is lost in pyrolysis. On the other hand vaporizing can deliver more THC (the primary compound in Cannabis, it gets you high), but sometimes less of the other cannabinoids. However by vaporizing Cannabis at different temperatures one can target different cannabinoids and achieve the associated effect desired.

My vaporizer operates at a fixed temperature and I'm not sure exactly which cannabinoids I'm vaporizing besides the THC, I plan on researching that aspect of Purple Days vaporizer when I get a chance. One thing I can say for sure is this vaporizer gets me feeling higher than I ever did with smoking from any pipe, bong or joint. The high has always felt more uplifting, less foggy, and overall better for me. The highs with my vaporizer put me in a really positive mindset, more than I've gotten from smoking. I think this is due to the higher amounts of THC i'm inhaling with the vaporizer. THC is what you really are after if your looking to get high. Other compounds in Cannabis are better for things like appetite, pain relief and aiding nausea etc. At some point I think I'd like to invest in another vaporizer that is capable of different temperatures, that is if I find that the Purple Days isn't able to release certain cannabinoids. As far as I'm concerned i'd be completely happy only owning the Purple Days if it suits my needs. I don't collect vaporizers for the sake of having them, just as I never collected glass but I did have a solid, beautiful bong I was completely happy with. That's what I've found with my vaporizer. At my point in life I'm cutting away with material belongings that aren't necessary, so for me less is better.

It's all about finding what suits your needs and makes you happy. Keep asking questions, doing searches and educating yourself. Just being here puts you miles ahead of your buddies who only know Cannabis as something you torch with a Bic.

I apologize for the long post, I'm notorious for carrying-on like that. :)

sour,
After switching to vapor for the past 2 months, or so, I think that combustion doesn't get me any higher. In fact, if I were to smoke the same amount that I vape, it would have far less of an effect on me. As I mentioned in another thread, combustion tends to set off my anxiety now. I also get the "shivers" when I combust, like I'm so anxious that I am almost vibrating. Weird, I know. I also find that the head high of vaporizing, is a whole lot clearer, and more psychedelic. I can also focus a bit better, and I have more energy. So, all in all, vapor gets me the most desired effects, without the shitty ones. I much prefer this "neutered" high. If it is at all.

When I first started vaping, I didn't think I was getting as high either. Now that i've made the switch to vapor exclusively and have been doing it a while, I've found the high is just as intense, if not more so. The high is more pure, IMO. With combusting, I could only get so high before I got really tired or a headache (I'm talking several joints here over a period of time). I find I don't get that same effect from vaping. I just get wasted, without the couch lock or "thick" feeling. I much prefer it.

And, the bonus of not getting all those "components" out is that you can use your ABV for other things that will get you high. I made edibles and many make golden dragon.

I have been vaping for about a year and a few weeks ago was out in a bar with friends, this was before I got my Launch Box!, so I went outside and smoked a joint with them. Didnt get me nearly as high as a vape.....not even close.

Vapor is a cleaner high. Although there are a few high temp compounds that require high vaping temps or even combustion to release, most of what people are missing with vapor are smoke byproducts that have nothing to do with cannabis. Not only do people associate smoke toxins with the mj high, but your body also releases chemicals in response to the toxins, and the effect you feel from those chemicals put out by your immune system are also put in the basket that smokers call the 'real mj high'.

Like a lot of people, I remember thinking during my first vaping experience that something was missing with vapor, but I kept at it, since my lungs had started protesting at smoke. It took my 2nd vape purchase (1st decent vape) to really get the full effect, and I remember finding myself standing in the kitchen one night, just staring at the wall for who knows how long, with my mind bouncing around like a pinball. I realized I hadn't been that high in years. That's when it hit me that I could get higher with vapor, and that some of the 'smoke high' was just other stuff confusing the real effect of mj.

One of the reasons people who smoke herb think it makes you more high is they are also feeling a narcotic effect from the actual toxins of the smoke.
When you vape you lose all those toxins, and the associated narcotic effect. The high experienced when vaping is primarily one of only THC, when you smoke it is a combined narcotic effect as well as the THC high. You also consume more THC when vaping. So the high may be a lot stronger but it does not feel you are that high because of how clean it is.

3AM Bud is a good example. Some people will smoke their ABV (so nasty tasting) if they wake up in the middle of the night to put them back to sleep because most of the toxins left behind by vaping are still present in the herb. The narcotic effect is still there.

I'd never go back to combustion again. No, I don't believe it gets you higher after vaporizing. It's all in your head. I believe you feel higher because you have all that carcinogens and your lungs feel heavy from all the smoke. One of the reasons I looked to healthier alternatives was for the fact that I couldn't enjoy being stoned after combustion because I would always complain about my lungs feeling like it's ready to just explode, I'd always have to inhale deep breaths and drink a lot of water to have my chest area feel better. Now, after vaporizing, I don't have this issue. Nice stoned high, put a couple of eye drops in my eyes and I can go anywhere and don't have to worry about looking abnormal. One thing also that I noticed different is, I rarely get the munchies when I'm vaked, but that's a good thing since everytime I'd eat something after combustion, I would start coming down shortly after.

I think most ppl just don't have the first clue what a good vape is and/or how to get the most out of it. Everyone that i've ran into in RL that has tried a vaporizer has always tried a crappy cheap one, most have used one of those glass globes with a hot plate in them and I'm fairly sure those are among the worst performing vapes out there.

Even when ppl get a good vape, that doesnt mean they know how to use it well enough. I've seen a lot of new users ABV have big chunks and green pieces in it. You need to break it up good (as much as possible imo) to expose as much surface area as you can, stir regularly and vape until you have a dark brown ABV.

I think you waste more smoking than you do vaping.

I won't smoke ny ABV if I wake up in the middle of the night, but I will use my Extreme set to 210 and take a couple good hits off the whip. I'm still avoiding combustion, but even though it tastes horrible, it does put me to sleep pretty quick.

tdavie,
I have a theory:

I believe the perception of "getting higher" with combustion may have something to do with the huge amount of CO (Carbon Monoxide) that is being inhaled. Since CO keeps you from absorbing Oxygen, you get a bit dizzy (just like holding your breath too long) that adds to any rush you would get from the material being burned.

Thus we think we get higher, though that actual effect is only temporary.

A significant amount of THC/actives are lost due to pyrolysis at combustion temperatures, so you are NOT getting 100%.

Does combustion get me more "high" per equivalent amount of material.. no, a solid NO.

Does it get me more "messed up". YES... it will have my head spinning, my mind fogged and my body locked to the couch from all the various byproducts.

Vapor is a much stronger high in terms of cannabis effects.

I've heard a lot of mention about these "byproducts" that I don't quite understand. If I smoke a cigarette, I don't get messed up or couch locked. The only thing that would be making me really dizzy is the nicotine. If I chain smoke, I might get a headache, but taking one small hit of good weed is a tiny bit of smoke compared to a cig and has a major effect that vaping the same amount does not have.

You're incorrect... if you're smoking tobacco you're getting all kinds of fucked up shit... most of the same from cannabis + a bunch of other poison additives from the companies.

The difference is the nicotine high is short, stimulating and builds a massive tolerance... cannabis is long and depressing (overall).

Don't kid yourself that tobacco use as a whole doesn't exert a massive negative effect on the body due to all the shit like carbon monoxide, benzene etc.

I'm not kidding myself about it's health effects. Maybe you should read what I wrote more carefully.

Okay, I'll make this more simple. I'm going to get totally vaked out - great. Now, I'm going to smoke a cig. Mmmm, that's better. Effects = not the same as taking a small toke. If all the byproducts from smoke alone really played into a cannabis high, then shouldn't vaping and smoking something else at the same time produce the same effect? Sorry, I don't buy it. I hedging my bets on something about the other 77 cannabinoids accounting for the different effects between vaping and smoking.

Smoke from a cig and smoke from a joint (or whatever) are different in content. US cig makers add thousands of chemicals to the tobacco they use. Nicotine, which is a stimulant and a poison, is an extremely strong component of tobacco, and the stimulant aspect overrides the effect of CO and some other toxins, which are sleep inducing. So I think comparing weed smoke to cig smoke, as far as effects, is apples and oranges.

I definitely understand your logic mnmlh, but I think that the "high" from smoking MJ occurs because of a synergistic effect of cannabinoids with carbon monoxide, benzene, and other by-products. This is just my hypothesis though really.

I don't smoke tobacco often, but I definitely experienced a light-headed, grogginess when smoking a cigar a few weeks ago. To my limited knowledge, tobacco would not be responsible for this, but rather the by-products of the smoke itself.

Even if I am missing out on some cannabinoids while vaping, I think my health is a proper exchange.

Vaping gets me way higher. I noticed this when I first started vaping. It may be b/c I am able to take larger hits versus smoking the herb; I don't like coughing. But, either way, for me the high is way more enjoyable; more uplifting and more fun.

I think most people who vaporize do so at too low of temperatures that enough of the thc and beta Caryophyllene aren't released and new smokers who smoke a lot will miss the immune system stimulating affects that smoking brings due to the toxins being released from smoke along with the beta carophyllene which gives a relaxing effect and also stimulates the immune system but isn't a toxin.

Plus a lot of people aren't even releasing a lot of thc because they vape at 375f which will release so little thc that it would take a long time to get all of the thc and get a real high. This is why it takes a while to get you used to vaping for those who use low temps. You're basically lowering your tolerance to feel the vape effects. Proper temperature is why the de Verdamper is known to get people blown, it vapes at 392f which thc vapes at efficiently and covering the top raises the temperature which will vape some of the beta carophyllene.

Let's not forget breaking the bud up as much as possible which gives even better effects or if they have a whip, how to inhale.

Smoking is so easy a child can do it because it's nothing to it, just get a flame ,put to herb and inhale while vaping requires more knowledge but in the end you get more out of your herb.

Smoking is basically for the people who are lazy or don't take puffing serious and Vaping is for the Lovers of knowledge and serious puffers at least for now once people are taught how to do it right then this will change but until then each person has to rely on finding the info themselves.

Since I got my Aromed I notice no difference between vaping and smoking. I start vaping a bowlful at 420 F and finish at 440 F. When I was using the Myrtlezap I found myself always wanting more of a stone, and often wound up smoking a bowl. No more.

my theory with this is that people who are tobacco smokers find the transition to vaping harder as they miss the combustion side effects that much more.

Whereas if you're like me, never smoked cigs, its just that much easier for your mind to stop associating MJ with the combustion high and embrace the purer stone. I totally agree its different but for me much better, trippier for sure.

so the moral being for non-MJ smokers, use the switch to vaping as a chance to quit the ciggies at the same time. There's the health benefits obviously, but also a much nicer high from the weed to look forward to once u make the transition.
