does cannabis vapor irritate your throat?

I've introduced a few people to vaporizing and throat issues always seem to come up... an asthma inhaler was created with cannabinoids ( THC ) and thc was shown to be an irritant because of its size and causing irritation in the throat...

My question is- what do FC folks use to help with irritation that is as simple as possible for new users who cannot handle complicated processes etc... I personally have that found a bubbler to condition the vapor helps some but more complications etc...

maybe a great throat lozenge or something... We tried raw honey ( yummy!) but it does not coat the throat very long... mints seem to help some etc... I like the vape flavor of cannabis so forego mints etc and favor a bubbler or bong to help soothe the vapor but again - complications..

I recommend vaping some white sage prior/after session. Other than that fresh coconut water and mint/thyme tea works great too :).

I cannot advise on avoiding irritation in a way other than usage of pure bud and low temps.. Overboiled terpenes make my throat hurt,that is why i always start low temp and work my way up if needed.

Now I'm curious about incorporating inline filters in a vape design to scrub the converted gaseous phase for undesirables? I guess this is essentially what @Squiby does with her hemp fiber filters. Do you find the vapor smoother by incorporating this filter?

the one person who I'm healping now has the fury 2 and I'm recommending the little micro dose wpa that comes with it... there could be room for some fiber in there too to make it an ultra micro doser... th eidea of tea seems great too as it could like a ritual... start some tea and get ready for vaping etc... will have to find out if she likes mint and tyme or something else that works... thanks everyone!

@Abysmal Vapor my Girl and I were vaping that sage last night... OMG man what a treat! it was an old smudge stick we had that I broke apart to vape... we will get some more fresh stuff to try and I will recommend to my peeps as well= Thank you!
It is actually very rich in terpenes also Thujone which is the main ingredient in absinth/wormwood.. which is closely related to thc. It has some effects and also alters the high due to that reasons... Also it opens my lungs in way nothing else does. I feel my high way more psychedelic when sage is involved :).
I had plans to do some Sage QWET it and mix it other extracts for vaporizing ,want to see if it will make them runnier.:)

I dunno if this is helpful but something I noticed. Sometimes the irritation comes from the cotton mouth and throat. A little bit of buttery crunchy home made chex mix chewed until the cotton mouth is gone, mouth is rejuvenated with saliva and a tasty mouth taboot ;) Anyway, it may not help but I think the key is to get the saliva glands working ASAP.

But vaping these chems is 100 times worse. Im not saying that pure clean chemical free cannabis does'nt cause throat irritation, for whatever reasons we would really like to understand better.

And I am sure that far more people nowadays are using organically grown weed. What percentage of weed used/vaped is organic?
What percentagd of users use organic weed?

It HAS to still be below 50% surely? Even at 50% or whatever, so many people are still using chemical weed, yet I feel that this is often too easily ignored/discarded when people are discussing or trying to explain negative effects of cannabis.

IMO this should be taken into account first and foremost when addressing such topics.

@C No Ego Happy New Year to you too brother. I would love to ask your thoughts some time on vitamin c and cannabis' effects and the extent to which ascorbic acid diminishes them.

I take ascorbic acid in very large quantities as a vital part of my symptom management routine, always after food and vapor which both cause excessive mucus production.

The ascorbic acid is amazing at instantly dissolving upper respiratory mucus which literally pours out of my mouth and throat into the loo. The ascorbic acid helps to bring instant relief to the throat and upper respiratory irritation. Aloe vera juice is also excellent here for soothing the throat.

Anyway I take 10 grams ascorbic acid or more every day. It is constant, never a day off, so I wouldnt be able to tell if it is reducing the effects of cannabis. It could be doing so, subtly without me being able to perceive it, but I am not convinced about it being that significant.

I have known people to so adamantly insist that drinking orange juice stops their cannabis high, they would refuse to do it.

@Alexis Lol at those people.. about the orange juice, if anything it is rich in essential oils who adds to the effects of the herb :). Also i found it pleasurable and stacking different kind of pleasures could be such a threat.. :) I love eating after vaping IMO it adds to the high..
I feel sry for people that relate being high to having a blood sugar drop and feeling dizzy due to oxygen deprivation,imo those people even relate having sour throat as a part of the high.

I was just listening to a vid with Bob Melamede talking about vit c along with cannabis oil used for cancer... he is very open to the process and has direct experience of it working for people... any diminishing effects in their case could be a good thing as the doses are high and so is the High...I'll look more into how to adjust effects if possible... we have not been doing it this year but we do the liposomal vitamin c using an ultra sonic cleaner and lecithin to encapsulate the vit c . you may have heard of this but use sunflower lecithin ( no soy) here is a vid on it

moisturizes the vapor. Some even like very very hot water in their bubbler but that can reach a point where it's too hot.

Vapor is so so dry but not hot at all compared to 1000 F combusted buds.

Draw size can play a role so have them experiment. Instead of one monster hit, have them try 3 small hits. Note that it's the reverse for some people---they feel less irritation from 1 big hit.

After or during a session, get a washcloth dampened with hot tap water , cover nose and mouth, and inhale--- nice moist vapor therapy for the throat and lungs. And do this to show them why vaping thru warm/hot water is so good--- that moist air is really soothing!

Exactly what i have been experimenting with lately!
Either getting the load size correct for 1 small/medium hit or a larger load and breaking it up into 3 to 4 medium hits.
The end of coughing for me!

I can also add to drink water or tea or juice or whatever really helps as well.

I have consumed weed for over 40 years to one extent or another. Although I've always enjoyed the effects, it always came with a price; I just hated the inevitable coughing, sore throat and lung irritation.

Then I discovered vaping and although the vapor was less harsh, the unpleasant coughing and irritation remained, dampening the pleasure in getting stoned.

Three things changed all that; the device, my toking technique and filtration. Now, getting stone has no downside. No negative effects. Just pure smooth cool vapor.

First, I discovered the Vapcap. It magically delivers the smoothest vapor of any vaporizer I have tried. I LOVE THIS THING!

Second, I read about @natural farmer 's mouthpull technique. Once I tried it, I just couldn't believe that it took me so long to discover HOW to toke weed with no irritation!

So, this is it. Toking often is done by simultaneously drawing in vapor while inhaling it into your lungs. The classic joint toke.

Instead, try pulling the vapor into your mouth first, similar to puffing on a cigarette. Cover the carb of your Vapcap to restrict air flow, pull some vapor into your mouth but do not inhale, yet. Imagine that you are sucking up a thick milkshake through a straw. Once the vapor is in your mouth, near the end of the toke, uncover the carb momentarily, then open your mouth and inhale the cooled mouth vapor along with fresh air into your lungs. No need to hold in the vapor endlessly, it enters your system instantaneously, so you can exhale in a reasonably normal way.

This technique has been a total game changer for me and the pleasure of vaping weed is now JUST THAT; pure pleasure!

The third and final element has been filtration. Someone here on FC got me on to this. Sorry, I can't remember who. I found that by adding a tiny disk of degummed hemp fiber to the bottom of my bowl, effectively filters tiny particles that otherwise escape into the airflow. No particles in the condenser means no particles in your lungs either.

That's it. A simple technique that only adds to the blissful joy of vaping!

I hope you try this and that it heightens the experience for you as well.

Personally steam irritates me in all ways. I tried all kinds of inventions and vapes but nothing works completely. Driving vapes tend to irritate / dry my throat and convection lungs. I think it has nothing to do with dryness, I introduced a hygrometer into the Volcano bag and the relative humidity was like the outside. Sadly I had to leave the vapors.

IME it's a very subjective thing.
I have friends who ask me to use a vaporizer when visiting me and never cough or experience any irritation while someone else have coughing fits after a single hit. One particular friend used to enjoy big bongs and is an hardcore joint smoker (tobacco mixed joints nonetheless) but seems unable to take a vapor hit from my bubbler without choking.

I can definitely remember how the expectorant power of weed seemed sometimes overwhelming when I first started vaping and was quitting smoking so I guess you need to somehow get used to it.

Cough rarely I have extreme dryness of the mouth, nose and throat, even mild difficulty breathing, in general dryness of the mucosa. I do not know if it's THC or terpenes, try low THC and high CBD did not work either

I sometimes experiment both throath harshness and coughing or only one (most of the time I vape through water and only feel good :) )

I think coughing is material related (expectorant) and throat dryiness/harshness is related to dryiness/temperature of the hot stream

Hitting my nano through stem or through water filtration (with same load) made me thinking this way

Hitting mflb is much more throat stinging/harshness than coughing
Solo loaded with a potent strain made me stop hitting because of the need to cough (on second hit, the most powerfull I had at the beginning of my vape experience) and near the end it can be felt in the throath too, stinging like
Same temp with a weak strain made me feel harshness in the throat but no coughing and no need to stop hitting

All this excluding particles passing by the screen, this is another kind of irritation for me:
Once I was eating a dry cookie and decided to take a huge hit before completely clearing my mouth, a fucking couple of cookie particles went in my lungs... very bad experience, really hurting, nver did twice, definitely my worst vape related experience (worst than putting vapcap in my mouth cap first)

Expectorant got used to, like tolerance
Harshness I avoid it through water filtration (otherwise still there)

Not exactly a case of getting used to it I don't think but in the case of current or past heavy smokers the expectorant action of vapor is too much for their nicotine congested lungs.

In such cases where the expectorant effect is causing the coughing it would only begin to subside or be easier to tolerate if their smoking was to stop or be reduced.

I have found that a longer air path helps. I usually go through a dry bubbler, but those hoses help if your friends like them. The particulates and the heat are the throat ticklers in my experience. Some people use water, but I don't like how it steals flavor. Thats why I use bubblers dry. Anyway, enough distance takes care of both the excess heat as well as the particulates. I always liked the length of the standard LSV wand for making vapor less irritating. You could see clearly where particulates go to in the stem, and it rarely made it to the mouth. Time will help, but if the irritation is so bad it discourages you from vaping, time is not on your side.

You can try sticking a small, loosely rolled up piece of paper towel in the stem/whip of your vaporizer and add a few drops of water to the paper towel. This humidifies the dry vapor before you inhale it making it feel a little smoother.

Higher the temp the more likely I get irritation. I usually just have a drink handy; icey water; ginger tea; whatever floats your boat. If I vape without drinking much liquid it can dry my throat out. Often I have a teaspoon of Manuka honey and that works a treat

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I found this technique that significantly reduces the throat irritation I feel after vaporizing. Instead of inhaling to 100% of your lung capacity, try inhaling to 50% and filling the rest of your capacity with a breath of fresh air which acts both as a coolant to your throat and also pushes the warm vapor further down into your lungs and away from your sensitive throat.
