The Z-Team helped refine the patent pending HSA heater technology in Zion and after 2 years of testing it has proven reliable. Zion bore the Original 18650 unregulated convection vaporizer and now RBT is considering open sourcing the design for personal use.

The program would offer kits at various skill levels. The simplest being all parts are finished and just assembly is required. A medium difficulty kit would provide the wood body and cap with the holes drilled in but in its square, unfinished state, and lastly just the components to be used in a 3D printed wood design. 3D wood designs will be open source in OnShape, a simple, free, online CAD program. 2 years of testing on a 3D printed Zion has proven it a safe and stable material and testing with the first 3D printed Milaana 3 will start next week.

The kits will come with written instructions and would be supported by a series of YouTube videos. The kits will require a liability waver and no addition support will be provided. Kits would be sold with a 10 day money back guarantee. This thread would be the communal resource for support and would be headed up by a man that will have a full understanding of the RBT tech and a 3D printer.

Rastabuddhatao believes that providing safe and reliable components along with simple and clear instructions the average person can build their own Milaana. With some skill you can customize your wood. With some basic CAD skills you can design your own 18650 unregulated device and have it 3D printed out of wood!

This project is very indicative of the RBT brand and seems like it would be a shit ton of fun. Provided enough interest on this thread Ike at RBTretail will put up a waiting list.

This is just an idea... a starting point to something that plays to the engineer in me and is fueled by a new partnership with a bright, talented MIT grad. It's just pie in the sky talk, a dream. So please tell me your version of this dream. How would you open source for DIY?

I am in quite experienced in soldering / electronics so I’m sure I will be able to finish a DIY barebones kit.. is there any info on cost?
Any chance for early adopters to get some kind of discount?

If it’s useful for others I could make some kind of guide while building btw..

It's still a bit early to tell, but I might be able to add power-regulation, USB charging and later on maybe proper temp control and advanced features to the table.

Of course I'm also thinking about using DNA / YiHi / Dicodes boards, but that's so easy there's little fun in that. Besides, I think we might get the entry price even lower by using more custom solutions.

In fact it's been brewing in the back of my head for some years now, and I always wanted it to be some kind of open source / open hardware initiative, as I live under prohibition and there's no way I could make any kind of commercial venture around vapes or their accessories.

I made some prototypes already, using Atmel-based (ATtiny) boards and various methods for temperature sensing or extrapolation. I did play with mesh heaters too, but never published my experiments, as I thought it would be kind of a stab in the back to Ryan, who has been more than generous to me by allowing me to be part of the early Z-team, even gifting me several devices to test.

Now if we can use officially and unambiguously Ryan's heater in our projects and if he gets a cut of every unit produced / sold, that's a different story. And I like the idea a lot, really.

I lack the wood workings skills but I got a mini lathe and can probably turn and/or cut some stems, wood and glass. I have access to some limited 3D printing capacities via a good friend of mine. But I wouldn't be able to produce wood bodies that's for sure. On the other hand I can help for all the software and electronics hardware part, and in fact I'm eager to!

If you are willing to run bare cells in series, a OKL T/20 board with a 1k potentiometer is a very old solution that works well. Plus very cheap to build.

But for sure, it does work really well indeed. I had something more advanced in mind though, as well as ideas for single cell implementations.

Hey all! I am Glad to see that there are a bunch of people as excited about this venture as I am.

I'm the "3d printer guy" who Ryan mentioned in the first post. I recently graduated with my BS in mechanical engineering and have been really diving into vaporizer design and technology over the past year. I connected with Ryan when I heard him mention the possibility of a DIY milaana kit in an Instagram live video a month or so ago. Since then, he has already worked up a CAD model of the milaana body and is currently testing a PLA part that I printed this past week. Pending the results of these thermal tests, I am planning on printing some wood/pla bodies over the next few weeks and experimenting with wood finishes and stains. Eventually, I am planning on making these bodies available for sale for anyone interested in buying one to build their DIY Milaana in.

I am also looking at other micro-manufacturing options for making high-quality, affordable, and custom milaana bodies. Currently, I am planning on exploring cast resin, cast aluminum/zinc, and carbon fiber as possibilities. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these and if anyone would be interested.

I also have a custom vape, code named Anana, in the works that would utilize the RBT heater in conjunction with an actively cooled aluminum air-path. It is still in the early design stages, but I will be releasing some more info about it over the coming months.

I am already loving the ideas being posted in here and I am extremely excited to be working with Ryan and you all on this endeavor. I am going to try to post weekly or bi-weekly update posts with progress and testing on my end and will likely release the CAD models soon for anyone who wants to start customizing the design to their liking. I also post semi-regularly on my Instagram @raucoustrees if anyone is interested in seeing some more stuff I'm working on.

I cannot wait to see what the community comes up with.

That is cool to open source , 2 threads in diy were created in the last week to diy this type of heater . I suppose I should close mine or ask Moderators to close it ..

I think a simple electronics/heater kit would be a great idea. RBT could sell Kit , make a few bucks , and buyers would save money by diy the body and save time not having to find and source parts . Could really be a win-win situation .

I know I would have invested my $50 dollars or a few more on Kit rather then send the $50 I paid as installement payment on a lil'bud unit.

Many people can or know people who could build a wood box to accommodate the hardware.

A kit including hardware and body could work for those who aren't as comfortable building or creating a body .

I think both options still would need to be well priced as to encourage people to buy the kits rather then source parts .

Keep it simple ! Sounds like all the CAD and 3D talks would just add middle mans and spike the price of kits . I could be wrong , and surely it does interest some , I personally have budget/build for less in mind as I can't afford much..

Either way , great idea / concept , RBT, you went up a notch in my books ;)

Hey guys, thanks for the welcome backs! Really happy to see Kero here as he will no doubt drive material, battery and electrical safety into this effort along with making some bad ass high tech electronics for these vapes.

Just wanted to stop out and let you know that RBT has reached an agreement to license the full portfolio of RBT heater technology to ModPod.

Dan is a guy in this industry that is doing things ethically and moving in the right direction. I am thrilled to be part of the ModPod journey.

Dan will be joining the DIY effort here and on the IG lives to work to adopt the tech to the POD.

Royalties from licensing will fund the temperature mapping research being conducted by @stickstones and @Stu as it is fundamental to advancing the scientific understanding of vaporization.

Testing of the first 3D printed Milaaana will start this week. Catch me on IG for the latest.

Keep it simple ! Sounds like all the CAD and 3D talks would just add middle mans and spike the price of kits . I could be wrong , and surely it does interest some , I personally have budget/build for less in mind as I can't afford much..

All the CAD & 3D do is open up the project for anyone who wants to contribute. It also opens up resources for someone who has CAD skills to design their own unit but lacks production of their own body apparatus, mainly the 3D Printer.

This dynamic opens other countless possibilities from design, manufacturing to post-production value added options. Want to cut out someone in the middle, buy your own printer and learn how to additive manufacture or hire the kid down the street to run your print or your local 3D Print Lab or find one online.

A project like this creates an economy for the goods but it is cooperative by design instead of competitive. The goal is more devices in the wild and generation of enough resources to maintain a productive environment to sustain the growth of the project and interest in the community participating in the project. Keep in mind that someone may want to buy a carbon fiber shelled Anana with a 1500 filament superconductor (copper base w/ niobium & titanium filaments) battery hatch lid with a custom smokey quartz in silver button for $499 from someone in the community who built the vaporizer for them but doesn't have the time, energy or resources to build it themselves. That builder could have started out building a Anana out of 2x4 and just evolved from there. Evolution is the trick.

What I meant is , by rbt and modpod reaching agreement, it sounds like money is involved , therefor both rbt/modpod would need to profit (royalties from licencing ..).

Yes I know some can afford every model of every brands of vaporizers out there .. most diy projects in any market are to minimize costs of owning or doing something while customizing it to your needs . Indeed when doing it yourself , you can decide what quality of material to use..

Just hope both options will be available as far as kit or kits go, if CAD talks even as anything to do with diy milanna kits. .i guess i got confused between the kit and CAD, licensing and royalties, etc. thank you for your in depth explanation.

Edit: usually when you google a diy project of any subject it gives a list of materials needed and some type of step by step approach. That to me is a true diy . Buying a diy kit is abit different but can simplify the project for someone and indeed help economy in compensating someone for having put together the kit..

@P.A.M thanks for the feedback. Yes, kits will be sold at various difficulty level... the easiest being all parts are provide finished and only assembly is required. The medium difficulty kit will drill the holes in the wood and leave it square so folks can router, carve, sand, wood burn, stain the wood prior to assembly to make it there own. The more advanced kit will have just the parts and you can supply your own wood. @RastaBuddhaTao could purchase a set of communal drill bits that can be shared amongst the community. The idea here is to open source all of the RBT heater designs in the patent so a group of enthusiast can advance the technology and grow the industry.

My only request is we work to capture the fun and brotherly atmosphere that was there at the start of Zion.

Please remember we are all here collectively as a team to Fuck Combustion ... make Vapor, not war... band together and put out the fire.

I take the blame for any ill feelings in the past about RBT. Three vaporizer designs in three years by one man.... yeh I didn't deliver on time but I am very proud of what we all accomplished here.

So, with Zion complete, Milaana rolling and Splinter on the way the technology is proven reliable and safe and I am super excited to see the insane designs that emerge.

Once the Master Builders are selected @RastaBuddhaTao will begin a series of educational IG live feeds to teach the tech. With years or research and field testing the do's and dont's are easily learned for this simple technology.

So let's go create RBT LEGO

My apologies, I didn't mean to say anyone here is wrong.

All of this would be determined by the license the project is setup under if it is going to be open source. Normally on something like this the software side of the project is free & open source (CAD/3D files). Should you decide you want to use those files, you would need to follow the licensing of those files for individual or business use. Should you decide to publish changes to the files, then you need to follow the license specifics.

The hardware would be the kit and I believe RBT has mentioned a waiver would need to be signed in terms of risk/liability on the end-user assembling a kit. This could be a separate license for the hardware since some proprietary parts would be coming from RBT and this could be more of a closed license vs. open source of the CAD/3D files.

My guess is if someone wants to source steel mesh and mica and the rest of the materials themselves, they would be free of buying the closed source parts from RBT and not being bound by that particular license. Now if that individual goes online, 3D prints their own shell from the open source files they'll be bound by that side of the license in terms of paying royalties on sales over $10K as an example (license would specify all individual and business use).

My apologies again. I gave multiple examples of how to work around not having your own 3D printer to illustrate the beauty of having the project be open source. We aren't forced to buy the hardware from RBT or at least not the shell (wood, bio resin, carbon fiber, etc.). If you want to learn CAD, you can design your own custom Aana, buy the hardware kit from RBT and take the 3D files to your local 3D print lab to print or the kid next door. Try doing this with an iPhone shell as an example, Apple would never share those files and I bet the industry equivalents in this space would balk at a similar concept.

I think the MOD POD deal is separate from this Anana project, MP is going to use RBT heater tech in some future iteration of MP, is this correct @RastaBuddhaTao? I apologize for my ignorance of the MOD POD project. Looks like there will be some collaboration here as well which is awesome.

No problem on the explanation, I'm happy to help. I've worked in a few open source projects over the years, most of which were successful to varying degrees and one that failed miserably in which I was the project manager. So I'm haunted on the nuances around open source projects and the potential pitfalls which is why I wanted to clarify the pros of a project like this. It would be great to see this endeavor succeed.

This is not intended to generate revenue so please don't get hung up on royalties and licencing but rather work toward getting the Beta team established. So, who want to be on the "assemble yourself" "pimp your wood" or "3D highdea" Beta team? Sounds like we have some people interested so pick a team and I'll sign you up! As in previous attempts @RastaBuddhaTao will provide the materials free of charge.
