Few updates... (Lotta microdosing)
First off, was stumbling through some old stems to get my backup 14mm short stem to replace my 14mm m2m because it's smoother and not so awkward looking. Found my old 14mm long stem. How many of you guys have one of these?! Haha. It's so funny looking but it's a pretty special stem to me and I really should try to get some more use out of it.

As you can see below I got my fresh short 14mm stem in here. I've been primarily using this vape for microdosing. Can keep the temp low and enjoy flavors for a surprisingly long time despite the tiny bowl, or instantly pump the temp up, pull hard, and get a crazy cloud. Or treat it like a session and just let off the trigger fast for super quick tasty rips that you slowly increase in duration as you go on for fatter and hotter rips.
QXPB1bA.jpg

Also as you can see in this pic (wouldn't have known without me mentioning it) I have the 2 battery back on instead of the 3. That's why it's flat instead of rounded. After using the 3 battery for a week it's such a joy to lounge around the house with this much smaller, lighter form factor. I love being able to switch from 2 to 3 batteries whenever it's needed. I highly recommend this mod if you find this sort of thing useful, as it's worked great for me. Jaybo rx 2/3.

Also for microdosing I am still using FJ software but not cruise controlling and not using temp control. The temp control with the added distance from the reducer requires a higher temp and the vape just gets overall hotter because the reducer also stores a lot of heat. I have found it, after much testing, to be much easier to just use wattage and press and hit. No temp. No cruise. Just good old fashioned adjustable Milaana. Sometimes you need a rising heat to really bring out the best in this sort of microdosing and not just a consistent temp. Ymmv

Basically I do a hit or 2 on 29W to get great flaves and light vapor. Draws are short. I step up the wattage to higher temp, around 32W, start drawing before heater is fully to temp, (2 main options here) let off trigger for strong quick bursts of vapor, or increase my draw as the heater picks up to really crush a rip. Can adjust to whichever you prefer mid hit just like a Milaana you self-tuned. Or just go straight to 35-38W, preheat for 5 seconds or so, pull slow for 1-2 seconds (should feel heat build almost instantly) and just rip that shit for 6 seconds or so. You'll be amazed at how much vapor you're getting, from a dry portable, with .05g of herb.

This thing has more variables than any vape I've tried and I'm fucking loving it. Don't be fooled though. It's not overwhelming. Just grab a $30 mod, screw in the Splinter. Start on 25W. Go up or down if you want more or less heat. That's all you need .... but there's just so much more to play with if you really want to. And I want to.

Happy New Years everyone. You're all such great, helpful people. Thank you guys for all you do to make FC an incredible place. I'm still pretty new here compared to some, being only 2 and a half years, and I've learned so much from all of you. I look forward to being on FC for many more New Years!

Does anyone happen to have an iHeat and a Splinter? I got an iHeat and my Splinter should be coming soon now. I was just curious if anyone had a chance to try both to compare/contrast.
Nice that you have both ! Looking forward to read your experiences. I'm currently eyeing the lil'bud by Vapwood / @Bravesst , same heater type . maybe you can try that one too ? I'm on waiting list lacking funds for the preorder.

@Other Side .. well you started in getting started , lol, why not finish it.. got me started anyways, love a good can of worms. There is always room for adaptation or improvement , I don't see anything wrong with Alan or Mike perfectionning vaporizers , it only benefits us , the end users. Plus they do it for vaping sakes over money by keeping prices reasonable so that as many people possible can experience quality vapor. Even at that ,bums like me can't afford a lil'bud still , so I keeping drawing off my vapcap M for now lol any sponsors ? Lol

Been doing battery testing while only microdosing.
I'm testing the difference between my 2 battery backend and 3 battery. Currently testing the 2.
After 7 bowls the battery dropped to 3.92. I did 2 more super fast bowls and batteries stayed at 3.92 lol. So total I'm at 9 bowls and still above 3.9.

I'll keep you guys updated on how many bowls I get out of my 2 battery mod. Then off to the 3 battery mod to see what the difference is like.

Remember this is strictly my usage pattern of microdosing. Load up a bowl, sometimes cruise for 30 seconds as I pack up a bowl in 55 degree weather to make sure it's warm when I hit. Sometimes getting 6-8 hits out of a bowl if I'm taking it slow. Sometimes getting 3 if I'm rushing a sesh between games. I'm not adapting my usage around this test, just vaping exactly how I want.

Using only W (power) mode and no temp control mode.

If I end up with 15 or so seshes on 2 batteries I'm gonna to be very pleased. And so far it's looking good.

If there's anything at all you guys want to know, see, or test let me know. I'm low on herb so I'm doing strictly microdosing until I'm able to get more.

Since this thread is moving so slowly I'm gunna have to double post again.

Got somewhere between 14-16 14mm bowls out of 2 battery mod and they were at 3.68. I don't know what the cutoff is but I called it a quits there. Pretty fuckin solid. I would go straight to testing the 3 battery ... but the 2 is just such a cleaner form factor. I love it. Possible just add 33% more battery life or something? Either way it's a lot of seshes. I'll test eventually. I'm just happy knowing the 3 battery will hit around 20 micro bowls. Fine with me.

I have a feeling once the majority of the pre-orders start arriving this threads going to be much more active. In the meantime we all appreciate your insights into using this thing while the rest of us eagerly await ours. Keep on enjoying that thing man!

@AJS

Yeah totally agree - like to see your reports. Please keep reporting while we keep waiting!

Is the splinter getting more use now you sorted out the uneven ABV issue?

P.S. i asked Ryan for a 2nd splinter so i have a spare.

@AJS

Buy the way where did you get that 14mm reducer?

Understand dd dave does not sell them anymore and i guess i need a US not ISO?
I've had this one since DDave first released his reducers. If you find a US one you should be good to go. It's obvious if it fits or not. Then you can use a regular 14mm iso m2m to connect to 14mm glass or use dry. You don't need it to be 14mm US because it's going into the adapter. Works fine. My glass is 18mm but I found a neat 18 to 14 adapter for $10.

Edit:
@oddjobold it's being used exclusively. Abv still isn't perfect but much better. Zion still a better vape but this is really small and I'm just having a ton of fun using it no matter how I use it. And I like that I can dial in exact settings, use cruise control, etc. Once I get some more herb and I'm not forced to microdose, I'll go back to temp control in the 18mm and buy a whip and treat it like a desktop whip vape. I think that'll be a ton of fun and I'm really excited for it. I think friends will love it too. With cruise control it'll be so easy and laid back. Can't wait.

Just an update on parts/production for those waiting on their preoder or who have joined the wait list.

Ryan expects fittings in late next week. He has already processed all the wood and other parts so as soon as he gets them it will be assemble and ship!

He has 12 preorders to cover and I think close to 200 on the wait list. Should have those pre-orders out on a little over a week and get a good chunk done for those on the waiting list.

Now while I'm here I'll share this one with ya.

Been wanting a fancy DNA mod box so I picked one up. I'm glad I did! Still playing with the settings but loving the performance thus far and the look/feel is sweet!

Brought my Splinter to a friend's get together dinner and let him use it. We're both conserving right now so I showed him the microdose setup. He has my hot Milaana that I sold him not long ago.

I loaded'er up, put the power at 29W, told him to hold the button and preheat as long as he wanted and just hit sorta like the Milaana. Move temp up if needed. Gave him a bowl to vape himself as we watched a show. Let him do his thing, until he said "think it's done". Handed me a dark brown abv bowl and said "that thing sure hits harder than the Milaana.

So sorta shows if you have a Milaana, if you aren't having perfect results with it, this may be more down your alley. At least for him it was. I think he still really likes the Milaana though, but I think Splinter just easier for him.

So i saw on IG Ryan has chaged the design slightly. No longer straight sides, slightly concerve. Hes calling it splinter 1.5.

Has this been implemented yet on the batch thats almost ready to go?

There is a curve with the Milaana for me anyway! I love it but could, possibly, love the Splinter better! Im itching to try it. 200 on the waiting list??? I wondering where I am??? Got on the list in late August I think. Right after procuring my Milaana. Hope I'm in the first run or so!!! You listening Ryno???

I don't think he has any of the new design made yet but I'm pretty sure wood is done for the pre-orders and a portion of the wait list.

Those designs are all just ideas at this point.

I like both the Splinter and Milaana but I think the Splinter will ultimately have more appeal because it fits on a mod that is commonly available and it's regulated which takes most of the technique requirements out of it.

Just curious i think i prefer the original design with the straight sides.

The Splinter is also simpler to make and will cost less. I haven't used the Milaana much since I got a Splinter, but that would be true no matter which one I prefer. Until I have a month or so of experience with the Splinter, it'll be the device I use most so I can learn as much as I can. For the advancement of science, I will force myself to do things I would normally not do, such as try to rig a whip for it. Why would anyone want to use a whip with it? I don't know, ask @AJS. Since he's doing it, I am compelled to try it and see why. For science.

kssJ2xe.png

This is the tubing and connector for my MagicFlight Orbiter, stuffed into my 18/14mm M-M connector. There are two choke points in this system, one at each end, introduced by 3mm ID acrylic tubes. These are actually short pieces of the MagicFlight stem, one intended to be inserted into the MFLB (in this case inserted into my M-M connector) and the other to hold the whip tubing in place in the 14 mm connector that I used as a mouthpiece. That introduces a lot of restriction even before the drag of the whip comes into play. Since I was weaned on the Arizer Extreme (long whip) and the MFLB (try to inhale without breathing) the restriction in this system does not bother me, but some would hate it. It's not as bad as a milkshake draw, but it's far from free flowing.

For context, my method is to start pulling at 5 seconds and continue until it times out at 20 seconds.

So at 27W, my preferred power setting for flavour, I expected to see some fairly thin vapour in the connector. I did not. The smoothness of my inhale made me wonder if I might not be getting any vapour at all. I was. A lot, it turned out. Now I saw a reason to use this: it might be even smoother and cooler than using water.

At 30W (my usual finishing power) I still couldn't see vapour moving through the connector, but it produced a cool smooth thick hit. I suspected that the 3mm choke point might cause a hot spot in the load, and I was right. The centre was distinctly browner than the edges and needed stirring. Maybe this wouldn't happen with a more open air path, but then the outcome would also be different. For science, more testing is needed.

At 35W (where I go to get clouds for science) I finally started to see vapour in the globe. Not much, not enough to cloud the globe, but the hit I got was huge, thick, and only slightly harsh. The AVB was totally black. This was not combustion, but it sure was exhaustion. I don't often finish a load in three shots, and if I'd stayed at 30W I'd have gotten several more tasty hits. I'm a microdoser. I make a bowl last all day. Some people, however, need to finish a bowl in one or two hits. This setup would let you do that.

I don't want to be hasty, but I think a whip—or at least this whip—might be a viable alternative to a water tool. I'll need to try some direct comparisons with my bubblers, for science. I was skeptical that using a whip would be worth the encumbrance, but I'm impressed by its performance.

@AJS: I must apologize for scooping your whip report, but I'm hugely grateful to you for inspiring me to try it. Now I'm even more interested in your experience.

@pakalolo Thanks a ton for your input and scientific testing. I know it's rough. I can't wait to try this setup!

Whips tend to be cooler for me but still have that dry feel some people strive to get rid of through water...not necessarily always intended for 'coolness'. Also glass is cleanable and whips stink. Those are the biggest factors I think keeping people to water ... wet vapor and cleaner setup. Just my opinion though!

Look at how easily I get clouds with this microdose setup. It's pretty ridiculous. The flavor rips are insane too, some of the purest I've tasted.

https://instagram.com/p/Bds3WQxnA-1/

Microdosing is best dry on W (power) mode imo.

Bubbler works best with the 18mm fully loaded on temp control cruise mode. I just double tap and draw. Never need to worry about combustion and the abv comes out great if I just rotate the Splinter around once or twice during a hit. It's a fun process. And the clouds will not stop unless I stop drawing. I'll send myself into a coughing fit if I just keep pulling because the vapor does not stop. I'll get a video of a super long draw for you guys soon so you can see what I mean. It'll produce vapor til the bowl itself has run out of vapor to produce. It's pretty intense. And the factor I can do this without holding a button is very satisfying.
