Long time favorite that I finally saw recently was Sinbad.

All time favorite is Brian Regan. If you don't know about this guy then you NEED to check him out.

Lisa Lampanelli is not for the easily offended, but was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Dead comedians or live comedians?

My all time favorite, the only one who had me rolling on the floor with tears streaming out of my eyes.......Richard Pryor.

There are many, many funny folk: one of my dead favorites is Sam Kinison. His evangelical backround added another dimension to his screaming stchick. He was kind of discovered by Rodney Dangerfield.

If you haven't seen him, Eddie Izzard is amazing. His HBO special, Dress to Kill, is one of the greatest standup routines I've ever seen.

I agree 'bout Kinison. Another favorite. The guy was just insane.

lwien,
I'm going to see Ralphie May for the 2nd time, in March. The first time I saw him, it was the last show of the night. It started late, and he went on around 11. He proceeded to make me crack up for 3 hours straight. He was probably the 15th comedian I have seen live, and that was the first time that I knew I was in the presence of a legend. I can't wait to see him next.
My all time favorite comedians though, are Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Mitch Hedberg, Red Fox, Dana Carvey, Jim Gaffigan, Adam Sandler (when I was 13 my dad found one of his cd's stashed in my room and when he read the lyrics he made my brother and I smash it. But, he wound up introducing me to Richard Pryor and Cheech and Chong...go figure), Cheech and Chong.....damn, I could go on and on.... I love comedy, that's for sure.

edited to add- Damn, I can't believe I almost forgot Christopher Titus. Dark comedy, just how I likes it.

I've gotta agree with Sam Kinison. the man was amazing.

Bill Cosby - my first experience to standup was listening to Baby Carriage Wheels and The Chicken Heart that Ate New York on my dad's old LP's. I must have been about 10 yrs old. And, his continued ability, over the years to be so funny

My favorite recent act was Zach Gallifinakis: Live at the Purple Onion. I caught that on Netflix (streaming). Blew me away. It seemed to cross the line between standup and performance art while being wildly funny the whole time, almost Andy Kaufmanesque, in that I could never tell when he was himself and when he was in character.

Steve Martin. (There is someone who just walked away from it in his prime.)
George Carlin.
Stephen Wright.

And, I just gotta say that I never liked Adam Sandler. I never thought his material was funny. Opera Man? Really? I just don't get it. (Ok, I know that's not part of his stanfdup act, but I could never sit through his standup act and I did watch a lot of SNL.)

One of the funniest comedy specials I have ever seen is john leguizamo's "freak" - it's insanely, deeply funny; I think the man is a true comic genius as well as a very talented actor.

Choism,
Daniel Tosh has a show called Tosh.0 on Comedy channel. Tears me up every time and if you can find one of his standup shows - killer.

But George Carlin was the king! More memorable bits from him than any other ever.
His shit always made you think ... a little bit. THEN you would really get it.

Look for his bit about fencing in and turning the 4 "square" states into prisons.
