Idiot (no relation to the Savants)
just got the bat myself. wow, the aluminum gets hot. no fucking kidding! i literally have to put the bat down for a few minutes after about 3-4 hits in succession, cuz the alu body absorbs and retains quite a bit of heat.

i need to figure out how to use this better because while i can get some pretty huge hits out of this thing, the aluminum body does get too hot to hold with your bare hands.

i stuck it into a 14.4mm downstem and it fits quite well. the first hit through the bong was wild because i had no way to judge when to remove the flame and just about combusted. i prefer this through the bong right now because as long as i hold it with a thin piece of cloth to protect my fingers from the heat, i can take some pretty huge hits, though i am filling up the bowl almost all the way up, too.

still trying to figure out how long to keep the flame of course. and also how to hit this without blistering your bare hands.:ko:

that last part is quite puzzling. how the heck are you guys able to hit the aluminum bats without getting the body to be too hot to hold??

What kind of lighter are you using?

a bic
At first I thought maybe you were using a torch lighter, which I imagine would get the bat crazy hot. I just hold the thing like a cigar between my middle & index fingers when I'm lighting & inhaling & set it down if it feels too warm. Granted it can get pretty hot, but it's also incredibly easy to control & I'd say the wattage of the hittage makes it an easy downside to forgive.

It's fun to play around with different inhalation and bat positioning techniques. I learned the difference between drawing versus sucking hot air through the ceramic filter (drawing works better); how to recognize the vaping temperature points & hit them accurately; how to get maximum surface area on the bud in the bowl (the don't pack the bowl principle is really important). It's a wee bit different from smoking in that I'm not trying to forcibly set something on fire but sucking flames onto it. I'm using my breath to warm the air in a tiny convection oven and simply inhaling.... big clouds of vapor. And like the clouds in the sky, each has its own shape.

Mine is getting hot as hell too. I'm just using a vector lighter (not a torch).
I might need to wrap some tape around it or something...

This looks like it may do the trick?

Also for anyone interested in the VG Bat - I think it is far better than the classic pipe design for ease of use. Back when I had the original pipe, I was burning my herb or not vaping it at all. With this I always get some nice vapor :D

i have a pretty hot candle flame lighter and i hit the bat for about 6 second increments... i draw for 6 seconds (give or take) then remove the flame and keep drawing the air for 2-3 secs then reapply the heat for another 6 secs... i find by the third "flame" hit that i only need to apply heat for a few secs and then draw regular air and the disc is hot enough to start producing big vapor.... i also stir the smoke after every 2-3 hits... i think with a bic, instead of 6 second hits bringing up the temp of the ceramic disc to try 8 - 10 second bursts... (the bic flame is a little cooler than the flame i currently use) initially i too was having issues with the heat of the alum, but i seem to have the hang of it now... although right at the end i find when i have to hit it with 4 or so "6 second" applications of flame that im pretty much on the verge of combustion and all the vape is pretty much done...but, i also noticed that the bat by this time will start cranking on the heat...so i use it as an additional indicator to keep me from combusting....oh, also for the new users, it does matter which way you hold the hole.... i hold it at about 45 degrees facing toward the ground...that way it catches the heat of the flame better...:)

Result of never using one of those pipe cleaner things. That vapor goo actually hardens up a bit allowing a lava effect of buildup.

That goo looks nice, how did you get it to come out like that? What kind of pipe cleaner?

I found the trick to the vaporgenie bat hotness!
So after practicing more, I've gotten to a point where I can pretty much finish a bowl in 4 hits. At this point it hasn't gotten very hot at all yet. My first few times I had to take hit after hit, and I got the bat hot enough that I burned my lips trying to use it.

I have ordered the bat 16 days ago, I am still waiting. How much time you guys have waited? Are there any reasons to be worried, or it just can take long time?

Wow, do you live in the US? Because I live in italy, and international shipping can take long times.
I'll wait only this week, then I'll contact them. I am becoming more worried everyday, here the postal services are bad, and sometimes they miss packages somewhere, or even worse.

I wouldn't be worried if I were you. Took mine 3 weeks to arrive. It's most likely being held up at customs.

By the way, has anyone tried vaporizing anything else other than mary jane?
The little pamphlet that came with my vapor genie says you could vap "other herbs such as Kinnick Kinnick, Mint, Sage, Catnip or Mullein."

If you have tried any of these can you please share your experience ?

Thanks

Drawing air is just breathing in slow & easy, simple normal inhalation akin to those thousands of unconscious breathes I take every day w/o even thinking about it. The VG seems to heat up more precisely the more slowly & easily I draw. Sometimes sucking is unavoidable, like when there's wind resistance or obstructions in the air path. When the VGs are working right, it's a pretty effortless experience.

Thanks for replies guys.
However, I tried to vape some mint, but it was awful (maybe it was too old and bitter).

@Stone: Did you pay any fee to customs?

Smooth or Spiral handcarved?

Which wood? Walnut, teak or maple?

Great voluptuous residue. How long -- over what period of time with what frequency of usuage -- did it take to accumulate? Does it taste as honeyed as it looks?

The genie is really a wizard when it comes to herb extension.

Walnut spiral, which has been replaced by smooth teak for daily ops. Teak feels much nicer.

Long time, months. It smells awesomely honeyed and makes its way into Magic Cookie Bars, a recipe from Eagle Brands, made with cannabutter from an ABV/Everclear extraction.

Nope, it was actually a pleasant surprise. When the package came it was listed like at like ~$20 instead of $65.

Are there differences in flavor between the walnut & the teak? I'm gonna so the actual taste & texture of the wood is a factor. Does the goo form & flow as readily through the teak? Is one wood more porous than the other?

Didn't mean to go all OCD with the queries, but vaping is a seismic shift, the VG hits the fetish object nerve groove pretty deep & this forum seems to the the right place to yak about it.

I only have the hand carved Walnut VG, so I can't speak from experience. However, I do believe that there is a break-in period though. My first few bowls were slightly harsh earthy taste. After a few weeks of daily use though the taste goes away completely.

As for which wood is more porous, I do believe that its the walnut. (I could be wrong though) Not that it makes much difference because after just a couple of bowls there will be notable wear and tear from either. The oils from your hand will begin to concentrate in specific areas where you hold the pipe.

If your really anal about it, I would sand the pipe down (only use sand paper with a really fine rating) and apply a nice even coat of some type of food safe mineral oil to get the colour to pop. Let it dry and reapply if necessary. Then apply a few coats of either beeswax or carnauba wax. (Carnauba would give you a nice glossy sheen whereas beeswax is more of a matte finish) I myself prefer beeswax over the carnauba.

Total cost of sand paper, mineral oil and wax should cost you less than $10.
