CBD gives me headaches; FL please stop pushing it on me

Please share experiences, theories, links, etc.

I consistently suffer from seeming CBD-triggered headaches, regardless of smoking, vaping, or orally dosing, always have. In my pre-certified mmj days I could never tolerate vaping at close to or higher than 375 degrees F, or smoking/consuming strains famous for high CBD:THC ratio, or consuming any strain that was overripe or over carboxylated, could never tolerate these CBD levels without getting a headache that mimicked both tension and migraine and often included aggravated tinnitus.

However, I’ve never had any problems with sativa dominant strains, or indica dominant strains that have been harvested on the early side of capitate-stalked-trichome maturity. I repeat: any cannabis vaped over about 360 to 375 degrees F WILL trigger these headaches for me. And so will vaping low temp ABV at higher temperatures...those are the worst headaches triggered of all.

When I smoked cannabis many years ago, I would get the same kind of headache from what I call overripe bud or edibles IN GENERAL.

Do you agree that my story sounds like an issue with CBD? On the one hand I would like to know why this happens, but on the other hand I resent my state’s mmj industry for pushing high CBD products on me in lieu of whole flower, as if I am being forced into participation in drug trials to report side effects in exchange for barely enough THC or less than barely enough of whole flower.

Only one dispensary I know of statewide manages to dispense whole flower because it is in a ceramic cartridge designed for their proprietary variable-temperature controlled vaporizer, and I would not be surprised if the ground whole flower contents of the cartridge is adulterated with pure extracted THC in an attempt to meet ratio standards. I mention this primarily out of concern because the new entourage effect theory has come under a lot of scrutiny lately; whereas my vast personal experience proves that whole and unadulterated flower is by far a superior daily preventive for my type of headaches and other chronic pain issues.

At my initial recommendation visit with my certifying doctor, I was explicit about my experiences with headaches triggered by cannabis vaporized at over 360 degrees or thereabouts F. However, I was recommended a dose of 20mg of CBD isolate twice a day, and only 17mg of THC once a day, as if my experience meant nothing. This reminds me so much of when I would go to a neurologist who would want to prescribe me a beta blocker even though I had reported a severe week long visual disturbance in reaction to them. Maybe it was just that manufacturer, the doctor would say.

So, I want to gather anecdotal data about CBD triggering headaches for my own future political activity, and I do not want people in my state to continue to be forced to participate in consumer-based drug trials in exchange for a poor imitation of the entourage effect, if that is indeed what is going on according to anyone’s profiteering intentions.

The problem with gathering anecdotal data on any topic online is the probability that the conversations are always corrupted by posters who have commercial agendas to steer people away from certain products and toward others. However, a pattern of doses, brands, symptoms, and method of consumption might reveal itself. Another problem with this task is how much I resent having to work for free for my proper medication, but there you go. I just did some searches for relevant content on FC, reddit.com, grasscity.com, and bluelight.com. I saved my searches for future reference. Are there any other domains that might have relevant discussions?

Sounds like they have the pharmaceutical mindset. Isolate the compounds and prescribe it. There's a lot to miss from the flower as you pointed out, even the extract will be closer to full spectrum than isolates and distillates.

I am not sure if your experience with over-ripened flowers is a CBD issue unless there is already CBD present in the flower. My understanding is that THC degrades to CBN during the decarboxylation process so this may be part of the puzzle for your bioessay.

Have you tried only CBD isolate in varying dosages?

CBN might be part of it, but CBD oil even barely a mg sublingually is a trigger. Is there any point in continuing to force the CBD issue if a THC:CBD 20:1 is so well tolerated and effective?

Thanks for pointing out the CBN because I could have TWO triggers related to mmj. But, wow, if I stay under 360 degrees when vaping I do so well. It was easy to learn how to low temp vape with a Lotus because of flavor changes at higher temps. I think perhaps the pinene and caryophyllene work well for me but maybe myrcene and other higher temp terpenes are a problem too....

Man that really would suck being in such a nanny state as far as not being able to deside for your self what works for you and what doesnt , i feel for you .

as far as looking for peoples experiences i think you really would have to get answers from places were its legal and reliably tested to know what exactly what your dealing with . im fortunate to be in such a position as i am a legal patient up here in canada and have lots of choices to try and see what works . even after around 4 years though i still dont have for sure answers and im still experimenting . but might beable to give a bit of my views and or ideas .

I can say that if your idea about early lesser mature tricombe heads is because your thinking that more cbd comes with the longer the plant matures this is a misconception . as psychonaut says the longer it matures the more degragation happens which can lead to more cbn , not cbd .

The pheno type determines this not the longer it matures . the plant will either be mostly thc dominant , mostly cbd dominant or a combination of the two . a thc dominant strain or particlar plant rather , cant be made to have more cbd by letting it mature longer . its either going to produce cbd or not .

I started with thc only strains but started uaing cbd strains and combinations of thc cbd as soon as it became availble to me . i have never experiences head achs from them but were al different .

As far as the maturuity of the resin gland s go unlike you i prefer the plant to be fully mature . i liken it to ftuits like green bannas or strawberries might give you a stomach upset if uou eat to many . i belive the buds need to be let to ripen in a simalar way .

I check all my strains with a scope and can say that when i use buds were the resin glands are more clear i seem to get more of a jittery type of experience and more anxious tpye effects were as i like to see more amber resin glands mixed with cloudy and few clear . letting me know its ripe .

One thing i dont like is when the producers donts let the plant use up its fertilizer reserves that it has stored in it leaves . they should let the plant rid its self of these stored reserves by feeding only water for the last couple weeks . the plant well yellow as it uses up these stores .

I hate to see solid dark green chlorophyll and fertilizer filled buds and maybe this could be a reason for head achs . might be worth concidering

Hi @chris 71 ! Wonderful tutorial on trichomes and CBD, thanks! Degraded buds with high CBN sounds more and more like my problem then. I know what you mean about the jitters. But a long time ago I was able to prevent that in myself by extra doses of magnesium and niacin supplements. I wonder if the slightly unripe bud uses up certain nutrients more than others in me but by supplementing I counteract that. Also, I consume a lot less caffeine than most people. Anyway, your advice about seeking answers is well taken. I'll just reiterate here: the CBD isolate or in ratio over about 1:12 CBD:THC seems to be the offender. So the more CBD the more CBN, maybe?

And thanks for the sympathy about my nanny state. Sometimes I'm in a good mood and just tell myself that my state needs to take baby steps in acceptance for the new legality, so the pharmaceutical mentality is just a way for the industry to get one foot in the door. But other times I can't help but see conspiracies everywhere, including the doctors and dispensaries. I can't blame my paranoia on green bud because I haven't had any for a long time!

Headaches are worst type of pain.. I hope you get the bottom of your problem. I have recently got some cbd isolate and i can say it has positive very positive effects on my gf migraines and my jaw pain which is a result of an surgical event. We are all very different and react different to most of things ,i got a friend that gets head aches from carrots lol... ,so i believe you might have hard time finding others like you which doesnt mean your problem isnt there. I wish you good luck with your endeavor !

The solution to my problem is so simple, give people the choice of what cannabis to consume. But choice means competition. I found this passage about the problem, stated in very abstract terms:

Paris, 2/12/16 - The 2016 OECD Global Forum on Competition will be discussing "Sanctions in antitrust cases" on its second day.

Competition law offenders are often subject to fines (civil, administrative or criminal). Fines impose a cost on those companies or individuals undertaking illegal anticompetitive conduct. Breaking competition laws is profitable if it goes undetected. Fines play a role in deterrence by making unlawful conduct less profitable.

From the perspective of the company, it will not violate the law if the expected monetary sanctions are greater than the expected illegal gain. It may have a financial incentive to violate the law if the expected illegal gain is greater than the expected monetary sanctions. Behind this trend, a number of competition authorities have put forth a great deal of effort to adopt or revise their legislation or guidelines on fines.

This discussion addressed how sanctions including fines are applied in various jurisdictions and benefited from participating delegations' enforcement experiences.

Recently had an appointment with a "real" neurologist who actually practices medicine as well as certifying FL residents. I called him "real" because some of the store fronts that certify patients look like certifying patients is a main revenue driver versus a "real" medical practice. The certifying neuro was recommended by the primary neurologist who treats my wife for severe chronic migraines that were not helped through a recent brain surgery. Botox is a miracle for her but she still needs cannabis when it wears off a few weeks before each 3 month treatment. In the past she has ended up in the ER when the pain became too severe...thankfully she hasn't experienced the sensitivity to cannabis you've experienced @hibeam .

As far as what helps my wife....at the beginning low THC and high CBD variations were very helpful in that the wife didn't have to get buzzed to experience some relief. Over a short period of time she seemed to build up a tolerance and full THC/full spectrum was the only thing that worked well and continues to work well. Neither my wife nor I have experienced adverse affects/headaches regardless of what temp we vape at, how little THC is involved or how much CBD is involved. But as I mentioned above the "low dose" offerings stopped working for her.

When the certifying neuro got done interviewing and entering her info for certification he said his recommendation would be for "low-dose" not "medical marijuana". Regardless of the fact that the wife had brain surgery, has had these migraines 24/7 at pain level 7 and above for a decade ... it still wasn't enough to qualify her for full spectrum cannabis. Welcome to FL compassionate care .... NOT. When I mentioned that "low dose" doesn't work for her he made it clear that's all he could prescribe based on current laws. He also mentioned that our disappointment at qualifying for low dose only is very, very common. I called another certifying location to find out if it was possible to certify my wife for full spectrum but all they would say is she would definitely qualify for certification but they wouldn't say for what version. When I explained that low dose doesn't work for her and I needed to know if she would qualify for full spectrum or it wouldn't be worth her time to come in they refused to answer in a concrete way. All they would say is we should come in, that all their patients love their practice AND their products. Sales tactics is all I got.

We almost decided not to follow through with getting the wife certified but we decided to do it anyway with the intention of buying the low dose product in a oil or distillate form and then adding resin from flowers to it. Sativa dominant will be our approach. This way she can still get the card and still get the dosage type she needs. If it doesn't work we won't bother staying certified.

Side note - not sure who decided the nomenclature here. Why call full spectrum "medical marijuana" and the other "low dose". Makes googling for info a pain in the ass since "medical marijuana" in most peoples mind covers all versions of cannabis.

@His_Highness thanks for your detailed story...we may have different dose issues but we sure do have the same political ones. I did not mention before, but I have additional suspicions about the least of all evil of options, the only one that so far works at all for me. I get the vape cups and use the dispensary's proprietary (rebranded) variable temp device. I think what is happening is at the low temp I need, the first few doses I am getting good entourage terpenes, but because the "bowl" is reheated a number of times to use up the doses in the cup, some extra carboxylation is happening and degrading material to increase level of CBN, which HURTS my head and neck. For people who really need the THC, this protocol seems to induce them to BUY MORE PRODUCT because the original purchase fails prematurely.

May I ask you for the sake of discussion, what ideal minimum mg of THC per day would your customized dose provide? Even ballpark figure?

The alternative term for wetlands, that begins with S, describes the political/commercial culture down here well.

Excellent point about aiming for the THC in the low dose versions causing increased revenue.....hadn't thought about that.

The "per day" dosing is not really my goal. My goal would be to try and even up the percentage of THC to CBD in whatever media we try and enhance. I've seen some NY pairings that got me thinking. Here's the summary description on the three:

- High THC / Low CBD (20:1)
- Equal THC / CBD (1:1)
- Low THC / High CBD (1:20)

I'd like to be somewhere about halfway between the "Low" and less than the "Equal".

We just sent in the form and $75 fee so while we wait I will try and educate myself on the enhancement approach. Recently I saw a rosin press in action and I'm wondering if I could press some Sativa and mix it in with the low dose offering to bring up the THC%.

EDIT: My wife would get "nervous" with the percentages above 1:1 which is why I'm shooting for the THC% I mentioned.

I recently learned to keep telling myself that all other things being equal, the legal mmj industry functioning at all in our state means more people are more comfortable having conversations with each other about QUALITY and effectiveness regardless of legality. So maybe as consumers in Florida educate each other the system will be pressured to improve. The dispensaries in our area seem to be designed to encourage a little fellowship while waiting for a turn in the "back room". :)

Update on my CBD/CBN/THC ratio problem:

If I take a "heroic" dose of active ingredient high THC, meaning around 40mg compared to the 17.5mg recommended, then when I take the recommended dose of 20mg CBD extract, I get no headache from the CBD oil. The increased THC dose is no more psychoactive to me than a cup of espresso. Nice because I don't tolerate any kind of coffee. On days I have not had a good dose of THC (low temp vaped high THC product), vaping ABV will give me a headache.

Sincerely yours,

I imagine the above is what many of our politicians and cannabis deniers are saying and thinking. Wish they'd ask me or my wife what WE thought....I'd tell them...."My wife doesn't enjoy anything when her migraines kick in ..... and that includes getting high. She doesn't want to get high when she has a migraine...she wants some relief and for that to occur she needs THC as well as CBD".

@His_Highness : Another ploy by the anti-cannabis establishment to vilify the THC as "recreational" only, an evil to the inane puritan believers.

THC is just as "medical" as CBD, or any other component of our beloved plant, which works best in synergy with all of its components. It can be effective medically in a variety of ways (pain relief, anti-nausea, appetite stimulant, digestive issues, among numerous others). The THC can inhibit or can potentiate the effects of the CBD (and some terpenes) as well, if needed. The reverse is also true.

The entire plant is medical whether some people want to admit it, or not, imo. The fact that we can moderate the medical effects by strain, dose, or even the CBD/THC ratio is just the beginning to our understanding of this amazing herb.

@hibeam : perhaps varying the CBD/THC ratio, with different strains may help. In any case, good luck!

FL is a freaking disaster and I just don't know why the people who voted for this constitutional amendment aren't class action suing their own state government (yeah, I don't know if you can actually do that). Morgan is suing them, I believe, and I wish him the best.

If you think I may be picking on your state too much, let me talk for a minute about MD, the most incompetent rollout of a program I have ever seen. But, finally (after five fucking years) we will have dispensaries with product in a few weeks....full herb and concentrates.

I'm so sorry for your wife's illness and the obstruction by your state government. Vote those asshole out of office.

I wouldn't say that. It may not be a cure-all, but neither is THC, and CBD has lots of very helpful properties.

If anything, I feel like people understate the benefits of CBD, since it doesn't get them high which is their main reason for using Cannabis (not to say there's anything wrong with recreational use).

Just wanted to pop in with my little story on CBD strains. I am in KY and have been vaping flowers and oil consistently for more than a year using my Mighty. Very recently, I have started getting a lot of anxiety vaping a single bowl so I am taking a little break before trying a 1% THC/15% CBD strain I have ordered.

Have been having stomach pain off and on through the day as well. It is slight and comes and goes quickly.

I am laying off the Mighty for a few days until the 28g of Ringo's Gift arrive.

Sure hope the anxiety doesn't return. It may be I who is the problem so I am also starting to meditate. I am also thinking about how I use the herb - and am generally less interested in the highs but want to maintain my otherwise excellent health at 47 (6'4", 177 lbs., and I take *no* meds of any kind).

@Blackfriars : I hope the CBD products will let you use the THC dose you want, or be so effective you don't need the extra THC. I used to live in KY and remember some really POTENT flowers available sometimes. :)

Just in case you are a bit like me, what are you doing nutritionally for the anxiety? Meditation seems to be a very powerful force in healing people, but my anxiety can go off the charts when I am magnesium deficient. I also have anxiety trouble when I overdo certain foods, in my case animal protein, which is really frustrating because I do not thrive on a vegetarian diet.

I wanted to mention magnesium here even though there's some propaganda out there claiming that cannabis use DEPLETES magnesium because in my experience, as a genetically programmed person to be chronically deficient in magnesium, IT DOES. Here's an old thread off site about this:

I did not run a search on FC about magnesium, but I remember being in past convos here about it and am sure other threads exist about it from before my time.

I was told 25+ years ago by a professor at my college to take magnesium. I have OCD and generalized anxiety. I did for a while, but over the years, my supplements have decreased to three flax oil caps a day; a multivitamin for folks over 50 (I am almost 48); and a large vitamin C and an enteric-coated aspirin. That is it. (No prescriptions of any kind.)

I will look into magnesium taurate as that appears to be more bioavailable than the generic white pills I used to take. Thanks for the link!

I am vegetarian and have been since 1990. I do not drink or smoke. I vape herb exclusively. I use no other drugs. I walk over 4 miles a day every day. My BMI is 21.54.

My flowers are not from the Commonwealth, which is sad. My backwards state could roll in dough if it would open its eyes. Two hundred years ago we were very active in the hemp markets. (Yes, I know hemp isn't cannabis.)

Please hit me up if you would like to chat? :-)

Happy U.S. Thanksgiving!

I also wonder sometimes about pesticides and such. I see organic weed a lot that is more expensive.

Indoor lighting, I have read, reduces CBD levels in plants. And, I have read, successive generations of once-high-CBD strains can experience a drop in their CBD levels in their genetic expression with each passing generation. Also, CBD testing is expensive so I wonder how often it is performed on successive crops?

I am generally leery of marketing spin. I am in marketing. :-) One day, I hope to grow my own. I think I would be excellent at it, and I would never second-guess what I was buying.

We may have a few significant issues in common. I don't tolerate taurate well because I build up taurine levels too easily, so I use simple magnesium chloride brine or sea mineral magnesium hydroxide.

Here's an article that summarizes one of the many reasons why I need magnesium, but as I mentioned before, I also have bad genetics for magnesium metabolism in general. My entire life I've suffered symptoms of low magnesium, but only when I hit my mid-fifties did I finally arrive at the heroic dose of magnesium that kept me level.
https://drjockers.com/cbs-mutation-low-sulfur-diet/ ...not all the recommendations on this page work for me because I have other issues like I can't metabolize medium chain triglycerides either, which by the way sets me up for failure with a lot of MCT cut product.

Yeah, so deceptive it makes me paranoid to even talk about it. I trust NO ONE and have to keep a lot of suspicions about our state's program to myself. I hate how much I know from just being an informed patient that I can't DISCUSS locally for fear of being penalized somehow. But I can say that the line between criminal and judicial branches of our society have merely been more blurred across the entire country and it will take awhile for cannabis to be as generally accepted and ignored as alcohol and tobacco. Don't you think?

Love those old GC threads= they are legend. as to one of your questions- THC activates cb1 receptor where ion flow increases turning on FAAH... I think inhibition of FAAH reduces magnesium...

some peoples ECS can be so depleted that the cbd via cb2 does not cellular crosstalk back to cb1... thc is needed to target cb1 in those cases.. in a healthy person cbd will have plenty of crosstalk to activate cb1. for Genes transcription factors CBD is off the charts, thc does not come close.
