Relay, what's that? :p That would be the old school way. However, you are right, could very well be used but the FET works very well with no mechanical parts. Not to mention cheaper.
You are also correct that it's needed to handle the high current. :science:

Anyone tried 3d printing an enclosure for the skeletor? I whipped one up in cad, no experience with 3d printing though. If anyone has any input or suggestions throw them at me. I'll still need to locate the top hole and a hole for the battery display wire.

I'd be nervous about this as-is, because the heating temps near the coil will likely equal or surpass the extruding temperature of the plastic used. Common vaporization temps are roughly 160-220C. PLA is the most common filament in FDM 3D printing, and has a very low transition temperature where it starts to soften. It *extrudes* out as liquid reliably at around 190C. Other materials have slightly higher temps, but nothing that would get you out of a softening risk and some would introduce a toxicity danger.

If you could have it printed in a non-plastic material (expensive!) or swap out another material just around the heating element and make sure it can vent heat decently, it might work.

i dunno.. i think you're overthinking it..

i have my skeletor in a cloth and burlap covered cardboard/cardstock container.. i have never been concerned with cloth, or cardboard/cardstock scorching or catching fire..

if anchored properly internally, i think it would work quite well

To clarify, the risk would be melting, not catching fire.

I built a heater box, and I’m currently powering it with a 3S 1300mah lipo. I’d like to use a AC power brick like the ones in the vid but finding one that doesn’t kick in the protection circuit has been fruitless, so if anyone has a lead on a power brick that can power one of these please let me know.

Thanks for these. I saw some similar units on Amazon, but not one as small as the first one you posted. I guess I was hoping for one that already had an enclosure and wiring, but I can handle those if need be.

Why not a PC (ATX) power supply? could be free if you have one laying around. There's guides online on how to get them to work w/o a motherboard

I'll keep that in mind as I have a couple of unused PCs around.

Yes, they get very warm/hot as well, which is why you cannot just leave it powered up. Only while your using it, as the coil does needs some cool down time. It takes approximately 2 minutes before any real trouble starts from leaving it in the on state. Then the enamel from the coil will start to smoke. Being there, done that. :science:

Just noticed something, not sure if it's an issue or not. Went to charge up my skelly today (only the 3rd time) and the chager is making a strange noise. Sounds kind of like air hissing/ buzz. Anyone else noticed the same thing or possibly an issue with the charger?
