I'd say so, although a lot of the smaller places are finally jumping on the Belgian bandwagon. Good thing is, a lot of them don't know they should mark up the bottles, so it's easy to find bottles of Rochefort 10 for $4.50. Hard to pass that up.

Capt. Jacks in Bismarck (south one, I think) has a decent selection of American microbrews, but nothing that outstanding...the occaisional minikeg of Bell's Two Hearted is always a fun find.

Anyways, here are my current top 5. This is going to be hard to write...

5. Odell IPA (Odell Brewing, Ft Collins CO)
4. Peche Mortel (Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel, Quebec)
3. The Angel's Share (Port Brewing, San Marcos CA)
2. Mephistopheles (Avery Brewing, Boulder CO)
1. Trappistes Rochefort 10 (Brasserie de Rochefort (Abbaye de Notre-Dame de Saint-Rmy))

Ugh, still so many great beers out there. I can honestly say that the best beer(s) I've had would be a one-batch run of "Platypus" I had at the Avery Brewery. The brewers brought out that keg on 4/20 and let us have a couple glasses. Amazing sour beer made with a wild yeast strain. Also Westverletern 12 is actually worth the hype, imo, but I think putting beers on a list which other people can't easily get in a store is kinda silly!

@DrMephisto; I hit up Capt. Jacks in Bismarck in July/2001 while driving to Mt. Rushmore. I had picked up some beer there (Summit Maibock) I had never tried before. We wandered through Pierre en route to Rapid City, and then finally staying at a KOA near Rushmore. On the way back we retraced our route to Canada and I was able to pick up some 'Black Dog White' that I still remember. We plan on going to Yellowstone this year, so I think we're going to pass through South Dakota again.

I'm up in NDak, so I don't have much experience with the Sodak liquor stores, but I do know they have quite a few of the Northern Colorado microbrews there. Odells' stock should be in pretty much every decent sized store, as well as Avery and New Belgium stuff. If you're a hophead (and why wouldn't any of us here love such a close relative to MJ) try to pick up some of Odell's IPA. Solid brew. Anything Avery does won't disappoint. Hog Heaven for sure.
If you're heading to Yellowstone, you should be right in the area of microbrew heaven....I'm sure any store you hit up will have some tasty tasty treats.

Bell's Oberon (but not this year's....it sucks)
Hoegaarden
and, being from the big "D" you gotta give props to Strohs

When I'm in a bar, however, I always order a Black & Tan

Enjoying some Hobgoblin on my day off! Great beer! Usually have Heineken, Steam Whistle, Wychcraft, Pilsner Urquell in the fridge lately...

I like yuengling, newcastle, stella artois...

Most of the time I am really drinking to just get fucked up so I will roll with bud light, pabst blue ribbon, etc. People always hate on that shit, but why spend when I won't remember the flavor? Yuengling is under $10 for a 12 so I usually roll with that.

If you are looking for a great beer, consider delerium tremens. I would only get it on tap though, had it on tap and it was great, bought it at whole foods in a 4 pack and it was awful. It is really really rare but great.

I have had a ton of the expensive & exotic brews but it's just not for me. I don't really drink for flavor. Just like wine and champagne, I have had cristal & moet that was super expensive... but whatever... I have found cheaper things that taste just as good if not better.

West coast biased...due to west coast location!

*As in, my 5 favorite beers that I could drink every day and not get tired of.

1: Natty Greene's Southern Pale Ale



I've had MANY pale ales in my time, and I do consider myself an expert on them. This one is not the best I've ever had, but it's the only one that I've never tired of. Distinctively tangy, deceptively sweet, and almost hoppy enough to be a "Session IPA".

If you ask me, the West Coast is king of IPAs, and the East Coast is king of pale ales.


2: Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale



ALMOST too heavy to drink every day, but not quite. If you know beer, then you know the Arrogant Bastard. If I could afford it, I'd have one with dinner every evening. This beer is simply perfect.


3: DogFish Head's 60 Minute IPA



So crisp! So smooth! A little light in alcohol content at only 6%, but this one is so tasty that it doesn't matter. It's a session IPA with balls, I guess. I always introduce people to IPA's with this beer. Light and easily drinkable, while also satisfying that hop craving that IPA drinkers are looking for. I really, really love this beer.


4. Belle's Two Hearted Ale



Okay, Centennial hops are my favorite hops. And I prefer IPAs that only use one type of hop. A big mix of hops can be fun, but I usually find it overwhelming and sometimes annoying. Give me one hop, and let me experience it. Let me get to know it. Each hop is precious enough to be on its own, IMO.


5: Flying Dog's Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA

RARELY do i enjoy a spicy beer, but the Raging Bitch just nails it. Not the best or boldest Belgian-style out there, but just right for a 6-pack. I always drink this one while eating ginger snaps and it is delicious! At over 8% alcohol, I recommend this as nighttime-only beer!


Honorable Mention: Rogue's Dead Guy Ale



I don't understand why this is called "Dead Guy Ale" when it's actually a Maibock, a type of lager. But... whatever. This is the first "fancy beer" I ever tried, and I've been a beer snob ever since.
