Does the soot represent a big problem with the VG? If I use a normal lighter, (with candle-flame type) there is any risk to inhale soot or damage the ceramic filter with it?

Actually, soot can cause a huge problem. You want to avoid the flame touching the filter. When flame touches the filter it can leave black soot marks. Given enough soot you will clog the filter and the VG will have performance issues

So a torch-lighter is better? And what about those powerful torch lighters that have about 1300, any risk of damage? And... Soot is dangerous for our health?

I would say soot is dangerous as much as for example flint dust. So no big deal, but definitely unwelcome in vaporpath. Torch lighter doesnt damage your VG as long as you dont torch the filter :p Actually, I was using only regular bic light recently, because I experience that the regular flame cleans the previous soot from filter better... on the other hand, torch lighter has better taste because it adds water vapor to the path.

But the soot that goes away... where it goes? In the lungs, or it just burns?
I think it's very strange that a black soot spot will disappear magically...

I have found what could be the perfect lighter for those of us who have the bat and other VG variants. It has a conventional flame as well as a torch flame with sufficient adjustment range providing as big or as small a flame as required. It is not cheap but is certainly high quality. The following link is for the best deal yet I have found for this model

Hey guys, I'm new to this site but if you have any questions about that lighter or any of our other lighters please feel free to get in touch with me. I'll try and post some deals in your retailer forum and I appreciate you guys letting me participate here!

It goes into a vacuum cleaner attached to your pipe. You attach the hose to the end of the VaporGenie (with the tip removed) and draw air through as you superheat the part of the ceramic filter that has soot on it. The filter will glow orange and burn off the soot

Using a torch lighter isn't necessarily better but it is stealthier, doesn't deposit soot, and heats up the filter faster. I don't have any idea what the ACTUAL temperature is of the torch flame, but as long as the lighter you're using only has one torch it should be fine..I've never used one of those dual or tri-flame torches

So im finally the proud owner of a aluminum vapor genie bat and i must say, after the first couple of 'learning curve' bowls, i was well on my way if you know what i mean hahaha. needless to say i am pretty blitzed right now thanks to the massive vapour hits this thing delivers. just wanted to thank shotgunwilly for those helpful tips and everyone else with their input into a great thread about vaporgenies - for without reading this thread, i probably wouldnt have had the gusto to make this purchase! as advice to anyone wondering about the vaporgenie alu bat: the genie is best used in solo situations, by this i mean passing around an aluminum vaporgenie isnt such a great idea because after a while it tends to get REAL hot. then again, we have to remember this is a conduction vape so it doesnt have all the perks or ultimate quality of a plug-in vape. but enough with the cons, this thing is GREAT. real quick learning curve if newbies would like to try, this thing can deliver MONSTER (no joke) hits. and as a personal note on use, i find that if i have a consistent, medium paced draw and apply a bic lighter for roughly 8-12 seconds, i can COMPLETELY fill my lungs up with thick, rich vapour. and the taste AHHH the taste! So much better than smoking! im never going back ;D

peace :D

My primary concern is with the hits the bat delivers. I see everyone talking about how it is quite a heavy hitter.

How does it compare to the launchbox and iolite? I have both of these and am a bit dissapointed with the light-ish hits both these devices deliver...

I would rather take a few big hits to get where I want then spend 15 minutes on an iolite bowl.

Sorry to nitpick but it definitely not a conduction vape. If you think about it , if it was doing its magic via conduction you wouldn't be able to hold it in your hand for long. While the bowl might get warm it gets no where near vaporising temperature.

And to tell you the truth I think the Glass VG and to a lesser extent the other Vg's can stand toe to toe to any of the more expensive vape here in term of taste and usability. It comes down to technique.

I know that there's a whole lot of debate over the type of lighter to use argument, however, I've decided to get a torch lighter so i can actually vape outside with a hell of a lot more ease than dealing with a BIC in the wind. I've looked all over the internet and can't really find one torch lighter that really looks good and woth the money. All the expensive ones seem to have flaws and all the cheap ones seem cheap and crappy as f**k. Does anyone have real good experience with one specific torch lighter that I could order online?

http://www.bugstores.com/shop/lighters.php?product=BS0M21 This is the one I'm most considering.

I use a couple of these guys. Cheap and effective , it has a small torch flame perfect for the genie. Dealextreme has free shipping and is very reliable.

@Rin101: Thanks for your info, however I have read something about the anodized aluminium. It is used in the bat, and it may release something toxic when heated. I will try to find that article.

Dude, you are AWESOME for posting this! This is the kind I have been buying on eBay for about $3.75 each, but they take weeks to send to the US from Hong Kong! I am definitely bookmarking that.
With regards to the lighter, I have been through 2 of those and they are great! Using cheap cheap butane from Wal Mart the lighters lasted for at least 3 months each. After that they stopped lighting (not sure if it's a problem with the lighter or with the cheap butane, as I've heard that cheap butane can clog the fuel lines). Anyway, thanks for posting that link, bro.

I doubt the anodized aluminum bat or pipe heats up enough to release anything toxic because anodized aluminum is used in a lot of cookware and frying pans that heat up hotter than the VaporGenie. I'm no scientist, but the VaporGenie doesn't seem like it would be my main source of anodized aluminum poisoning  But definitely let me know if you find that article

DealExtreme ships from Honk Kong. Most likely, the ebay sellers are just drop-shipping from dealextreme.

I have found these info in another forum:

"Anodized coatings have a much lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of linear expansion than aluminium. As a result, the coating will crack from thermal stress if exposed to temperatures above 80 C. The coating can crack, but it will not peel.[6] The melting point of aluminium oxide is 2050 C, much higher than pure aluminium's 658 C.........."

This doesn't sound good. Confused

Vapor Genie says "These pipes are anodized, inside and out. The anodized layer is thick and durable, which provides good resistance to chemical corrosion and reactivity. There is absolutely no need to be concerned about aluminum exposure.

My understanding of this is...thermal stress will cause the anodized layer to crack, thus exposing the aluminum? Thus exposing me to the aluminum??

andreisnt, you are welcome, im glad i was able to help out. digglover, i too started with the iolite and it was my favorite for the longest... my problem was how long it would take to bake a bowl... but the bat has is now my go to vape... it delivers huge clouds... you will think the bud is igniting with it...but it will still be green... monster hits, big vapor... the trick is just finding the right lighter... im lucky, i have a broken old lighter that has a blue "candle" flame, with just the very very tip being yellow, it is real hot so works wonderful, however, i havent been able to find another new lighter like it... the torches dont work real well with the bat and i havent found a candle flame yet that is all blue...although, like mentioned thru out these pages, bics do work... you just have to hit it a little bit longer per hit. but i think if you like big vapor, you will love the bat... there is a little learning curve with it... but for $45 you cant go wrong... and again, you will really love the vapor with it...

It looks like 17 or 18 mm to me, but I'm not sure if it should be measured from the threads or from the outside of the metal bowl.

For many reasons, a plug in the wall vape isn't very smart in my tenement firetrap of an apartment, so anything I get has to be portable. I've a pair of VGs -- bat & classic -- and am seriously amazed. I get 3-5 actual full hits from a literal pinch of herb (like the same amount that burns off the end of a one-hitter) & still have reasonably potent dusty leftovers for whatever. I am toying with the idea of a Magic Flight Launch Box, but the batteries look like a lot more dinking around than simply having a bic (or my favorite lighter) around. So I guess my question is, to those who've worked with a VG (esp the bat) and the MFLB, is the actual quality of the vape different in any way? I've found the VG capable of a pretty wide range of vapor qualities (a variety of tastes & textures) with a lot of actual control at the helm, so does anyone have any strong VG v. MFLB comparison/contrast thoughts along the lines of "is the MFLB worth the money if you're already in love with yer genies?" Are the batteries actually a big problem? The one battery/one bowl rule sounds like a lot of recharging & waiting four hours for full charges. I like the look of MFLB package tho & don't wanna be dissing on anyone's vap o' choice (unless it's a vapor buddy or something equally in need of whistle-blowing)...
