Is it possible to perform successive anodisings? Are the layers opaque or is there some transparency that could show the underlying layer? Can you submerge only part of the stem to create multi-color effects?

What about using masks to create surface patterns?

In fact ,anodising offers endless possibilities of decorative art.
But let me answer your questions :

-Is it possible to perform successive anodisings?
Yes. As long as you start from the higher voltage colors and move to lower voltages.
The other way around would not work.

-Are the layers opaque or is there some transparency that could show the underlying layer?
Neither .Layer of titanium dioxide is transparent allowing to show any marks underneath.
But because Titanium anodising doesn't not really involve any dyes or actual opaque coatings
( in contrast with stainless steel and aluminium anodising) there can be no layer that can show from underneath.

One can even paint an image while anodising with the help of modified ordinary painting brushes
or create various patterns with an ordinary piece of sponge.

The chart is about another reactive metal ( NIOBIUM ,Nb ) ,
but it applies exactly as is for Titanium as well.
Notice that true pink is achieved at 125 to 140 VDC.
Way to high voltage.

Usually anodising Titanium to achieve hues higher than second order blue ( > 80 VDC ) ,
is very tricky and involves nasty chemicals for etching titanium surface,prior to anodising.

Still some just get lucky enough and actually manage to get those hues ,
without etching.
Pink though (125-140 VDC ) is out of question,without etching Ti with HF
( Hydrofluoric acid ,can kill or cause severe injuries ,very easily .Even breathing it's fumes
can be fatal. )

HF aka Hydrofluoric acid


" Hydrofluoric acid is a solution of hydrogen fluoride (HF) in water. It is a precursor to almost all fluorine compounds, including pharmaceuticals such as fluoxetine (Prozac), diverse materials such as PTFE (Teflon), and elemental fluorine itself. It is a colourless solution that is highly corrosive, capable of dissolving many materials, especially oxides. Its ability to dissolve glass has been known since the 17th century, even before Carl Wilhelm Scheele prepared it in large quantities in 1771.[2] Because of its high reactivity toward glass and moderate reactivity toward many metals, hydrofluoric acid is usually stored in plastic containers (although PTFE is slightly permeable to it).[3]

Hydrogen fluoride gas is an acute poison that may immediately and permanently damage lungs and the corneas of the eyes. By interfering with body calcium metabolism, the concentrated acid may also cause systemic toxicity and eventual cardiac arrest and fatality, after contact with as little as 160 cm2 (25 square inches) of skin. Burns with areas larger than 160 cm2 (25 square inches) have the potential to cause serious systemic toxicity from interference with blood and tissue calcium levels.[11] In the body, hydrofluoric acid reacts with the ubiquitous biologically important ions Ca2+ and Mg2+. Formation of insoluble calcium fluoride is proposed as the etiology for both precipitous fall in serum calcium and the severe pain associated with tissue toxicity.[12] In some cases, exposures can lead to hypocalcemia. Thus, hydrofluoric acid exposure is often treated with calcium gluconate, a source of Ca2+ that sequesters the fluoride ions. HF chemical burns can be treated with a water wash and 2.5% calcium gluconate gel[13][14][15] or special rinsing solutions.[16][17] However, because it is absorbed, medical treatment is necessary;[11] rinsing off is not enough. Intra-arterial infusions of calcium chloride have also shown great effectiveness in treating burns.[18]

Hydrogen fluoride is generated upon combustion of many fluorine-containing compounds such as products containing Viton and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) parts.[19] Hydrofluorocarbons in automatic fire suppression systems can release hydrogen fluoride at high temperatures, and this has led to deaths from acute respiratory failure in military personnel when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the fire suppression system in their vehicle.[20] Hydrofluoric acid can be released from volcanoes, sea salt aerosol, and from welding or manufacturing processes. Careful with the Viton O-rings.
If one burns accidently (I'm not sure how ,though ) his /her Viton O-rings of the tip,
nasty HF fumes will be released .

One more reason to stay away from Teflon/PTFE! This HF acid is scary stuff indeed, maybe it's best if you forget these hard to reach colors, this way you can stay around us for a longer time... :lol:

Yeap,teflon is nasty.
Had torn apart my Arizer Air once and installed Teflon ,where a Kapton seal used to be.
(to isolate air path from electronics )
Later,having read about PTFE ,I tore apart -again -my AA ,only to remove the PTFE tape
and re-install the Kapton seal .Nasty,yes.

I'm thinking on providing a tip anodising service in the near future .
Free for those who get one or more of my stems and
with a small price for the rest interested.I 've to think about that.
Problem is that the tips have to be send to me and then ,once ready ,
I 've to mail them back.Seems not that convenient ,at the moment.

I can't make knurled stems.I'll need a CNC machine in order to to do that.
But I bet ,folks at Dynavap can do that.They 've access to CNC machinery.

Anodised graphics ,eh ?
At this case a stem may need several days to be complete.
That would skyrocket the price.
I dunno.If there's an interest or even a demand ,I'll seriously think about it.

Notice : My lab rat stems (stems that I make and use only for experimentation)
from now on are going to be given for free ,to FC members being VapCap users,
when they become useless for further testing.
Allow me to give them to whom I choose at every case.

Judge criteria is pure luck.
Someone has to be in the right place and at the right time,
in order to get a ...well ...a dead lab rat .


That's how I think of the term "recycling the trash " .

Would be easier to just buy new caps in bulk directly from DynaVap (eventually with a discount) and have them all shipped to your place.

Of course there would need to be a real identified demand for that beforehand...

I'm not quite sure if I can do that.
Selling stems is one thing .Selling almost complete devices is another.
Still,even if it is not a real problem ,greek customs is .
A bulk order from Dynavap is subject to Customs fees.
And it is not going to be a negligible amount of money to pay at Customs for importing the tips.
That would raise the price of the anodised tips,quite a lot (maybe even double it).
I wish there was another alternative ,but I can't think of any at the moment being.

If there was such a possibility , it would have been just $45 for a brand new, anodised tip
and free of xtra charge (pay only $40 for the tip ) for those who acquire my stem creations.

No lab rats here but I feel plenty lucky to be getting the 80STN08 and 63BRK02/03! Can't wait to try them. They sure look amazing with those anodized tips; love that gold one especially. I guess typically it would only have the fins exposed with the cap on though; so I'm sure it'll look just as "right" with my regular tips as well.

Could make so many cool combinations if you were able to offer anodized tips as well! Too bad it's such a hassle but understandable.

Just wanted to chime in and say that @stardustsailor was fantastic to work with. Sent a lot of messages back and forth explaining things, and he checked with me to make sure the stems turned out to my liking first before asking for payment. Definitely thinks of the customer when making his stems and is very receptive to feedback.

I sent a PM to get the ball rolling Friday evening and he had the stems made and ready to go over the weekend; impeccable service. They should be shipped out tomorrow! It was especially impressive because he wasn't sure exactly how the pink would turn out, but he managed to sort it out nonetheless.

I think the price listing is super reasonable as well. I can see these making some amazing gifts! Threads like this are why I love FC so much.

Just got mine. Won't bother posting photos cause the camera on my phone won't do it justice - it looks at least as good in real life as it does in stardustsailor's photos.

Much much much more grippy than the original stem; far less cumbersome to spin while heating. No longer have to spend my time hunting for the carb either (because there is none :D)

A vast improvement over the original. Thanks stardustsailor :D

How's the fitting of the condenser-'cause M has slightly a larger diameter condenser than the rest
of the rest VCs.The fitting of the tip ?

Do you plan on making anything that would fit a 14mm or 18mm gong stem? Plenty of wood ones out there, but I'm not sure of metal ones.
Straightforward answer : No.
Boro and Ti do not match .There are few good reasons justifying that.

Everything fits perfectly, wouldn't have known there were any disparities if you hadn't told me.
